Rex - Engine Shutdown

This article was posted at 0620 today (Thurs) on the ABC news web site:

New airline in turbulent beginning

A Regional Express plane has made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport overnight after one of its engines failed.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority says the pilot of the Saab 340 aircraft had to shut down one of the engines, just 20 nautical miles from Sydney Airport.

The plane, carrying 13 passengers, landed safely at Sydney Airport.

Regional Express engineers are expected to examine the aircraft tomorrow and will provide a full report to the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau.

Angry REX Shutdown

As I understand it, the shutdown was precautionary. As most of us know this is a common occurance and not a threat to safety. I really hate how the media reports stuff like this especially when people are struggling to get back in the air !!!!!!!!

The alternate view.....

Be thankful the ABC got hold of it. Although they are not perfect, if one of our other 'esteemed' aviation expert reporters had reported it, it may have read like this:
____

13 Rex Passengers Seconds From Death.

Troubled new airline Regional Express plane has made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport overnight after one of its engines exploded.

A spokesman for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority says the pilot of the Saab 340 jet aircraft had to shut down one of the engines, just 20 nautical miles from Sydney Airport.

The crippled plane, carrying 13 passengers, landed safely at Sydney Airport and all emergency services were in full swing for the Drama.

One of the passengers, Brian a fitter and turner from Arlington said, "I thought we were going to die". I was looking out the window and bang, all this smoke and noise. The aircraft plummetted and swerved, and everyone was screaming. I am never going to fly again."

Witnesses to the emergency said most passengers, although unharmed were visibly shaken.

The near tragedy comes just days after the release of a report into a high speed descent of another Saab 340 jet which nearly hit the ground a few months ago.

The airline was not available for comment last night.

I am almost afraid to watch this morning's television news for fear of being proved right.

Thumbs down

I can't believe what I'm reading here. This was a PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN, NOTHING UNTOWARD, BUT BIGGER NEWS IF THE ENGINE HAD A CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE MIDAIR 20NM OUT OF YSSY. Please grow up and not be triggered by these people who are nothing but alarmists and riding on the back of negative news stories of yesterday.

By the sound of things the pilots did the right thing and the passengers were not affected by a normal inflight procedure when a situation occured to safely shutdown an engine so it could be inspected on the ground.

Congrats to the pilots.

compressor stall......loved that post. You shold have placed a copyright on that. You'll probably find lowlife papers such as the Sun or Daily Telegraph publish your post verbatim.

You also forgot the bit about "distressed residents surrounding Sydney Airport". They will be quoted as saying how they live in fear of a major accident and this drama will cause them further sleepless nights. Then a few comments from a vocal-local Mayor and examples of how the dangerous SAAB 340 has been involved in numerous fatal accidents since it's introduction in 1984"

JW

You just have to read some of the posts here to find plenty willing to tip off a story about airline X, because they hate airline X and all it stands for. No need for an IQ test on this one.

The journos will report it because Rex is newsworthy at the moment, in fact any airline here is newsworthy.

I'm suprised they haven't spoken about that annoying & unreliable number 2 engine again! But don't worry, I'm sure they'll get a grab from the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation soon!

New airline flies into engine trouble

The country's newest airline has had a rocky start with one of its planes forced to shut down an engine whilst flying over Sydney.

Regional Express said pilots of the Saab 340 aircraft had to turn off one of the aircraft's engines around 20 nautical miles from Sydney Airport as it flew in from Dubbo at around 8pm (AEST) on Wednesday.

The plane landed at Sydney Airport on one engine without incident, the company said, safely offloading its 13 passengers.

Regional Express said the Saab 340 could operate safely with one engine and the shut down was a precautionary measure.

"The two pilots involved handled the situation very well and in accordance with normal training procedures," chief executive Michael Jones said in a statement.

Engineers are still investigating the incident.

It comes just one day after Regional Express's launch on Tuesday and the day after a report was released into the near crash of another Saab 340 under previous owners Hazelton.

Hazelton Airlines flight ZL185, bound for Bathurst from Sydney on June 28 with 32 people aboard, was about to land when the pilot lost control, plunging to within 65 metres of the ground.

An Australian Transport Safety Bureau report found the aircraft's warning systems were inadequate.

The Australiawide consortium last week bought the former Ansett subsidiaries Hazelton and Kendell, and adopted the Regional Express moniker.

Mr Jones said he believed the June incident was a one-off, not indicative of systemic problems.

How do the journo's find out you ask???

Well up here they have advanced scanning equipment and aviation frequencies programmed so they listen, hear and dont have to pay anyone!

Then they ring the nearest emergency service at just about the most inconvenient time possible (when the dispatcher is trying to get crews to the scene) and given most news media organisations seem to have more resources available to them thus explaining why they are invariable on scene almost instantaneously and able to get the "live to the minute and in your face reports"

thats one way the news guys get the information you often see and read...

great post stallie .... you missed you calling!

A mate of mine was a photographer with the Herald-Sun in Melbourne and said that on night shift especially they used to just sit around the office with a bank of scanners and listen in to the cops and whoever else...

Following on from Northern Chique. The news media armed with scanners have also been known to tape the audio from a live incident, say a wheels up, and run it underneath vision of the incident. VERY illegal when one consults the Communications Act. Have any of them been prosecuted? What do you think?

Compressor Stall,

What a good yarn!! I enjoyed it, but I am disapointed that you missed a couple of obvious bags.

They could be '20 nautical miles or 120 kilometres', and 'at this stage it is believed the captain is to blame.'

How sad it is though that the press really does report like this.

Stallie; good effort but you missed a couple of obvious ones:

"....dozens of terified passengers were seconds from a fiery death....." (13 pax = 1.083 dozens)

" ......the plane was forced to conduct a full emergency landing....."as opposed to a partial emergency

"....terrified passengers were treated for shock....." don't even start me on the medias perpetual fascination with 'shock' which is a clinical and life threatening condition and should NEVER be confused with 'shaken' or 'upset'...

"..... a brave young hostess attempted to calm stricken passengers........"

"....a Civil Aviation Safety Authority source said that the troubled new airline is under close scrutiny after a number of similar episodes....." well, one IS a number.

etc, etc, etc

Same Aircraft

At least they haven't picked up on the fact that the aircraft was the same one involved in the Bathurst incident on 28th June.

Compressorstall,
I laughed even harder after your post when I read the AAP writer's use of language:

....flies into engine trouble (senationalist)

....a rocky start (harsh ground-related opposite to flying)

....forced to .....(performed)

....without incident........ safely offloading (as opposed to unsafely but without incident)

..........the near crash (the incident)

....plunging to ...... ( descending, but sounding more terminal and sensational)

It is a sad reflection that news writers seek to dress up facts to get emotional responses from the unaware.
Well done Stally.
