I laughed even harder after your post when I read the AAP writer's use of language:
....flies into engine trouble (senationalist)
....a rocky start (harsh ground-related opposite to flying)
....forced to .....(performed)
....without incident........ safely offloading (as opposed to unsafely but without incident)
..........the near crash (the incident)
....plunging to ...... ( descending, but sounding more terminal and sensational)
It is a sad reflection that news writers seek to dress up facts to get emotional responses from the unaware.
