Never get used to seeing people say the AFAP was greedy asking for 29% as their long overdue pay rise. The AIRLINES believed the correct figure was 40% +++. A few GREEDY types took the bait and scabbed, to the heavy cost of everyone else! Those who stuck to the Federation showed integrity and confidence in their democratic pilot group - but certainly NOT greed! . .. .Obviously the ANscabs are now getting just what they did to everyone else.. .. .Another observation concerns those who claim the scabs were offering the company great benefits in restructuring and efficiency. So efficient they were flat out making an operating profit for twelve years and ultimately self destructed! How sweet it is!. .. .By the way, if you joined Ansett AFTER April, 1990, you are not on the scab list and will find a warm welcome elsewhere, including o/s. Go for it, and good luck! . .. .The same cannot be said for those whose name is on everyone's copy of the scab list.

A question to all 89ers,. .. .Why didn't you join the ACTU and not quit?. .. .AN would have had no way of getting out of that one, if SCAB AIRCRAFT came in to break the strike the ACTU (who's members control the refueling of the aircraft) would have had to back you, meaning that no scab aircraft would be refueled or serviced! and if you dont quit ansett had to fire you (risking law suits) or risk employing others over you (risking even more law suits) or pay the extra money (which would have been a cheaper option). .. .i am truly sorry about what happened to you guys, but you cant change what happened and you should have thought it out better!. .. .did you realy think pilots would stand buy other pilots in 89 when before that and still today most pilots try to stab each other in the back every day to move up the food chain, they are mostly bottom dwellers but they are there and always will be.. .. .and hial sorry about not useing punctuation but i am sure you see enough punctuation in the regs so it is refreshing not to use them, either that or i am just an un-educated git, ok it is the latter.. .. .have fun boys and girls and remember to enjoy life a bit bitterness is not fun for any one

Duck Muck,. .. .The Federation advised it's members to apply for their jobs back, in late March, 1990. The ban on application for employment was lifted at that time.. .. .Anyone who applied after that date is not on the scab list. In fact, a number of people related to 89ers, including sons and daughters, as well as some 89ers themselves, were employed by AA or AN after the dispute. . .. .To my knowledge only those on the list are made unwelcome by the majority of Aussie pilots both at home and overseas. A small number chose to scab, they have to live with themselves and accept recognition for what they are. It's a small world!. .. .The rest of us just get on with having a great time!

Keg,. .. .The reason we didn't join the ACTU and obtain the benefits you mentioned is because:. .. .1. The ACTU was a partner in the Prices & Incomes Accord. This piece of Corporatist Industrial Policy was at the heart of our campaign. We claimed a 30% payrise because that is the amount our wages (being foolishly in The Accord for previous 5 years) had diminished in comparison to like professions and occupations (who hadn't gone into The Accord). When we went into The Accord the Prime Minister personally assured our leaders (AFAP) that ALL AUSTRALIANS were entering The Accord for the sake of the nation to control inflation. We found out about his treachery very shortly after we signed the binding Accord documents. Not only hadn't many professional groups entered The Accord but so had Public Servants and even ... Politicians themselves. That is the heart of our claim for 30% and goes to illustrate why when we signalled out intent to exit from The Accord and retrospectivly get the 30% we'd been duped out of - we went headlong into confrontation with not only the Government, but their allies in The Accord, the ACTU.. .. .2. The ALP, the Government and the ACTU made it plain from the beginning of our dispute that we represented at common threat. I remember Simon Crean (then President of the ACTU) on prime time TV news telling us to "get back in the system".. .. .3. The connection between Abeles and Hawke was a personal friendship that carried weight during our dispute, but make no mistake - the ACTU was one of the prime players.. .. .4. The consequences of us effectively exitting from The Accord would have signalled to other unions (both ACTU affiliated and non-affiliated) that it was time to jettison constraints and ask for more. Shortly after our defeat, another union got 'cheeky' and was "reminded of what happened to the pilots...!!". .. .5. It is a crying shame that The Accord is not labelled as it should be. It was a Command Economy technique more akin to something happening in Russia. It was 1989 - even Czechoslovakia (SP?) had stopped using Command Economy methods. Within a year of our dispute Enterprise Bargaining was trumpeted as the new direction!! Spare me - it is exactly what we tried to do and got destroyed for and exiled abroad. .. .So - I hope that answers your question. Believe me, the ACTU via the TWU definetly wanted to body snatch the remants of the AFAP (as they subsequently did) but first, they had several vestsed interests in seeing us demolished with as much force as possible.. .. .The public at large did not want to understand this and/or were denied understanding of this because the Government and the Murdoch media were completely opposed to us and conspired to turn their propogada machine to full scale against the AFAP.. .. .Remember the first casualty of any conflict is the truth.. . . . [ 06 March 2002, 08:08: Message edited by: Waste Gate ]

Cool

Hey "Hot end" is that a genuine spelling mistake there about "Womenra" or not, seems that it might be seeing that 1/2 of us have lost our democratic right of reply to a mob who we ar'nt allowed to mention or defend ourselves?

Thank you "Waste Gate".....very well put. People need to be reminded about this.. .. .I have not forgotten the part played by Mr Kelty in "that year".. .Amazing that almost 13 years later, he again got involved in Ansett's fate.. .. .Well...I hope that the olive branch is now well and truely inserted in his fundamental orifice!

So what groups then went into the Accord, and why did they ?. .. .Why didn't they apply for a 30% wage increase ?. .. .What would have happened to the economy as a whole if they did do it?
