Several sources have confirmed that the only preference AN people are getting are the first stage testing. After that, all is fair and based on merit. There appears (if the rumours are correct) to have been a fairly high failure rate also among AN pilots in the first stage testing.

Someone else told me yesterday that there may also be a course starting late November, haven't heard of anyone with a start however.

Question

I was wondering, if you apply to Q and you are not sucessful (either by failing the Psych/Skills or any other tests), are you eliminated from applying to Q again or to any other 'links' to Q ??

Cheers

Heard a rumour yesterday that the first of the Ex Ansett pilots will be starting their course on Monday! As for what type it is for, I don't know.

Capt You Must Listen. There are six Capt and six F/Os contracted to Forstaff to commence 3 month contract with QF on Reserve for domestic operations. They are on a months training commencing Monday am, I understand.

Courses:

Yes, the course that has just started was a -400.

Next is November 8, followed by another in late November.

Plenty happening.

Question

QF.man,

Do you have any information regarding the composition of these courses? Cadet, direct entry or a mixture? Thanks.

Some AN 767 f/o's started this week. Rumour is that they are not on contract, but are direct entry f/o's on the 767, with the possibility of going back to be s/o's in the future. They will also have s/o seniority.

Anyone else heard this?

First I've heard of it Rabbish.

AIPA has been pretty good keeping us up to speed on these sorts of things so either it isn't happening or AIPA don't know about it yet!!

Either of those things could be true!!

Seems like it is true...one of the new recruits was up on QCC2 today saying he's gonna be an FO for a 90 day contract and going back to be a day one PUIT when that's over.

Is there any truth in the rumour that says in 2 years time, QF will only be taking on cadets, not more direct entry for good??

Are the "contracts" arranged by a 3rd party or are they something Qantas themselves have set up on the side for 767 rated ex-Ansett pilots? I assume whatever the arrangement, the 5 who are sticking around afterwards have the done full DE selection and finished on top of the DE holdfile. Just curious.

Hey Keg
was that you dragging that 767 into Melbourne the other day?
High speed descent 340kts/5-6000ft & 20 trackmiles?
Why are QF 767 pilots so slow inside 30nm?ATC agrees.
Is it just a longhaul/cadet type culture although now predominantly domestic will this change?
Always wanted to ask this question and as with many other domestic pilots, curious.

Bulldog
"slow" inside 30nms at 340kts, I don't think so!
Slowing down from 340kts inside 20nms at 5-6000ft, I hope so!
Passengers getting off the jet having left a whole lot of sick bags behind, just because the boys like to show how fast and slick they can fly (male grunt!). I hope not!

Dragging it in Bulldog? Not by choice.

Some of the skippers who know my monicker would be having a quiet chuckle for you to call me conservative.

It's a rare day when I'm less than 210 at 10 miles, 250 at fifteen and as fast as I can be beyond that (height considered).

Whilst I don't try and 'prove' myself or anything like that, I certainly don't mind flying the aircraft out to what I think is comfortable for the passenger comfort and the performance limits of the aircraft.

I certainly wouldnt' mind a fiver for all the times that I've been called 'speedy'. Not proud of it per se but i've been on the aircraft for four years and feel pretty comfortable (without being a 'hero' about it) and know where my limitations are based on environmental and other conditions.

With your figures though, 340 knots at 5000 with 20 to go is doable, 6000 feet is starting to work pretty hard. A bloke doing that would hardly be considered conservative!

Ideally I want to be about 3000' if I'm doing 340 knots with 20 mile to go!!

The other thing to remember though is that unlike AN before they went u/s, about 100 of the F/Os on the 767 in QF have been on the thing less than two years. I guess the figure would be similar for Captains although some of them would have been F/Os on the thing previously. Maybe that is part of the conservative thing you mean!!
