iOS, Gmail, Groups
Have a rello going on trip shortly. I've bought him an ipad as his old Samsung Android was too far past it and the ipad is easier to button-push (don't worry, I hate the things myself! ). The main drama on a previous trip was emailing: we just couldn't get his local email provider to work properly over the ship's wifi (which connects to the net, apparently, via some obscure server in east woop woop). We eventually got him onto Gmail, and that worked, connection-wise.
I have therefore installed Gmail on the ipad but now he wants the option of sending group emails. You guessed it:
- Gmail on ipad (and Android) doesn't send group emails as far as I can tell;
- ipad mail may be able to send group emails (via icloud contacts?);
- I can't "install" the gmail account in apple mail because it says "Gmail is already installed on this device", even if I uninstall Gmail off the ipad;
- I've tried Mailshot but I get it to do what I want.
Ironically, the Samsung email app can send groupies!
The only thing I can think of from here is to wipe the ipad and try to install the Gmail server details in the ios mail app with the hope that I can group-email with the Apple icloud contacts.
Perhaps there is another ios email app I can use that will do group emails?
I would be grateful if anybody could offer suggestions to resolve this dilemma.

You may have to go to the settings, accounts&passwords, to see if the Gmail account is in there. Just uninstalling the Gmail app doesn't remove the information in there, and that may be the reason that it is telling you that it is still installed.
Edit: You should be able to associate that account with the Apple mail app through that same corner of the settings.

Jhieminga, I'll definitely have a look at that, thanks.
One work around I came across is to send an email from your ipad to all the members of the group, including yourself. You will then have an email in your inbox containing all the group addresses. Select this email and select ‘reply all’ to send a group message.

Jhieminga, thanks, I removed the Google account details, then was able to install Gmail in the imail app. Hopefully it is using the gmail servers.
Report: after lots of Googling, so far I've come up with this:
1. Create a contact using the group name in the "Company" field eg Blogstrip
2. In the email section, type in all the email addresses you want in the group, separated by a comma and space eg [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and save it.
3. To send, open Contacts, tap on the contact (Blogstrip), then tap on the blue "mail" button. The To field will be populated with the emails of the Blogstrip contact (I did try the direct method by tapping on To, then +, then the contact, but it didn't seem to work; an email was sent only to the last on the list of emails in the contact).
4. Compose and send away.
So, a variation on QA1's method...
I did set up a group in icloud contacts, and that group appeared on the ipad, but I couldn't see a way of sending to all of the group in one hit; I had to tap on each one in turn, via the + button, to put them in the To field.
So, getting there... thanks for your help so far.

Another titbit I've discovered: if you create the group in icloud Contacts, to send to that group on the ipad, simply type the first letters of the group and the group of names will appear in the names list. Tap it and all the emails of the group will be loaded into the To field.
