Loading Apps.

It will come as no surprise to PpruNers, that after 3 or 4 years, I have only just discovered my MR Cliq XT can connect to a router. One never ceases to be amazed, but one is cautious of technology because of being zapped by high tension and burnt by hot valves.(tubes.) in the past.

Having made this discovery I want to download an app for Voice Recording, which is becoming urgent because of a failing short-term memory.

My phone is on Android but it seems I need Google Play Store app before I can load 'Voice Recorder'. Drat and double drat - why is everything so complicated? I have no idea how to proceed beyond this point. Hint hint.

I loaded a simple recorder, but it's limited to ONE recording. A waste of space.

I need, 'Voice Recorder' which loads, but fails to work. Or, summit like it.

Anyone know of a good recorder that will match a Grundig Steno-thingie?

If you have Android Market this should automatically update to Google Play Store.

There are several voice recorders, I tried Smart Voice Recorder by Andrey Kovalev which came down quickly and automatically installed a Home Screen shortcut. It records just fine and replays easily. Multiple recordings are possible, they are assigned numbers Record_0001.wav etc and you are invited to rename if you wish. Recordings can be played via the shortcut or in the dedicated SmartVoiceRecorder folder on your sd card.

Mike, running a search, does not find that app, however my icon still shows 'Market' so I'm not at all sure it's changed to play store, therefore I may well be browsing in the wrong shop, so to speak.

Running this tells me I haven't got G -play store

EDIT: Just talked to MR. Android 1.32 is the latest OS on here. I have a bad feeling I can't get much further with this phone, though I don't understand why I can't see your recommended link on the phone's list. ( she said, that icon is the equivalent to play store. ) Guess I'm just left behind with this dinosaur.

Everything below is kind of pointless now - unless it's a rainy day and you have nothing to do.

https://play.google.com/store/search...Kovalev&c=apps

My phone - an MB501 - does qualify, but the Android version may not. I do not know how to find my Android version.

I have Blur version 1 32 24. (Shrug) don't know what that is, and who would call something, Bluuuuurrrr, anyway? Sounds like someone barfing.

I fear calling the MR people on a Sunday, cos of the long wait times.

I'm persevering with this phone because it's astonishingly clear - and partly because I have 3 batteries, two chargers and headphones - all gained while they kept sending me new phones.

Oh, and it's unlocked, so it works on my T-mob account in the UK. BUT, looking at the screen sizes of the new Windowz phones, they're about twice the square-footage, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet soon. Not sure about Win 8 type interface though.

Hi Rivets, yes, seems you have a real ancient version of android tied to android market.

This link explains:
How to access the Google Play Store app - Google Play Help

Sorry, I guess you're stuck with what you can find in android market for that machine.

Alternatively, you might wish to get a more recent phone or perhaps keep the phone and get a tablet as well. For example Amazon charge £60 to £85 for the NATPC009 7" android tablet with ice cream sandwich.

Sorry, guess I didn't help a whole lot.

Hurrah! Progress!

Your machine runs android 1.5 and the list of apps includes Tape-a-Talk Voice Recorder. I just tried this and it does make and store consecutive recordings.

Recordings are stored in the tapeatalk_records folder or can be accessed using the Tape-a-Talk icon. Records bear numeric names yy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss.wav and can be renamed.

Download Tape-a-Talk Voice Recorder (Android)

I have Firmware v 1.5, but Blur 1.32. So I just don't really know which is relevant, but neither qualify me for the toy store.

"My phone has an app called Market, not Google Play"

Android Market is now part of Google Play; however, if your phone is running below Android OS version 2.2 (Froyo), your device will not receive the update to Google Play and will remain on Android Market.

It seems I should get the app using Market, but that's when things seem to go wrong. Voice Recorder downloads and hollers it's okay, but then doesn't run. Your first link to Smart Voice Recorder is on t'net, but not listed on 'Market' Okay, Tape-a-talk I'm sure I've tried, but will try again.

Is there any way to download it to the PC and then copy it to the SD card in the phone? Well, I can do that, but what I mean is make it run from the SD card.

EDIT: Mike, thanks for your help, but I do stress this would be handy, but not a vital issue.

Well, I still can't see that app! Typed it in very carefully with hyphens, but it says it can't find it.

"There are no matches in Android Market for the search: Tape-a-Talk Voice Recorder."

I've got the downloaded file from you link on my PC and phone SD card, but don't know what to do with it.

Oh well, Ian Flemming used to carry a notebook around the world, and look what happened to him. Mind you, I'd have been dead 17 years already if I'd been him.

What has cropped up is my discovery of dozens of apps. They're in the manage apps of the system, but not on the apps screen. Never knew they were there. The filter clearly shows the two I've loaded. So, when the phone has been doing masses of daft things - which it doesn't do in England on the UK sim - could it be because factory loaded apps are running around inside?

Hi Rivets, try using your phone to browse the internet, go to this page, and click on the link I gave above.

You may need to use Settings to permit loading of non-market apps.

Mike.. Check your PMs

try using your phone to browse the internet,
I have just one browser I've never heard of. It gave me Google, and I copied the URL in accurately, but after a red line zoomed across, @$^@ all happened. Yep, got the accept from unknowns ticked.

I recall giving up on getting FF on it. Seems I'm gong to have to get a tablet or sommit. G-son has HD Kindle Fire with plug in keyboard. Sounds more like me.

Looking at what to do with an apk file, I got to this point and in the old days I would have pressed on until it worked or was in the bin. But now I have to draw a line right there. Shame, but hundreds of hours of editing to do. No time for fun.

APK File Extension - Open .APK files

Hi Rivets, when your phone gives you google, type in: proon

Then use your phone navigate to here

Then click on this link:
Download Tape-a-Talk Voice Recorder (Android)

OR

On Android Market look for AppsInstaller

This should allow you to pick up the app from your sd card

Good luck.

Couldn't write tonight, so had another bash. It's a total dead loss. When, after nearly an hour, I managed to get a keyboard to stay around long enough to get a password into pprune, I downloaded the second one you recommended and it installed before telling me it wouldn't work on this phone.

They said they might update the Android, ver. but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Main problem I have is the keyboard goes on strike, so you can get into the box but the keyb won't pop up. Not even if I put it in the vice, crush it a little, and then pour boiling oil over it. Still nothing to press. Reboot got it going again, but by then it was a one inch cube.

May I suggest this as a more suitable solution.

Reminds me of a long drawn-out joke I used to tell when I was three sheets to the wind.

punch line was something like:

Wadda ya mean dictaphone? Dictaphone? . . .

Yeah! Dictaphone up your . . .

As mentioned, the plethora of spares, being unlocked and a very clear phone make me want to hang onto it. But if it won't run the Skype app, it's history. I can call all over the world to other phones via Skype for about 3c min - 10c more if it goes via the mobile link.

Advanced Task Killer. One of my kids here tell me he runs this. It might get rid of some issues. Anyone used it?

The main problem is the Browser. One small strip with Googoo in it, but the rest FaceBut and its ilk. AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGHH Now even that is telling me to sign in and not recognizing my password. Jut have to go to the g-kids house for help.

02:30 and thought I'd have a quick look, but it's the same. Haven't loaded that @#$%@$#% toy box so it won't play with me.

Tried from googoo and it's the same.

Try from "Market" and it does not list the app. In fact from Market it lists a very small selection of odds. Can't be representative of the app market.

How could it be ok for one MR MB 501 and not another. Mine was one of the first. A man at the store insisted I get the new one which I had to wait for. Ah, well, it was free for several years.

I'll call them (T-Mob) in the morning, thanks Mike.

Can you get it down via computer onto sd card?

Then, using the phone, open File Manager and touch it briefly - it should then offer to install....

One obviously has a lot to learn. File Manager??!! Okay, that's me bulked.

Touching it
is also a sore point.

Last night I went the route of Pprune - link etc. Having taken an hour to realize I had to use the Back arrow to go to the new field i.e. enter Loose rivets. Go. Look at password box for one nanosecond and it's back to square one. Enter my screen name and then press, back, and lo, the box is ready for the password. Total break from 30 years of computer methodology. Anyway, having done that, and got into the exciting area, one cell of my body, a 40-trillionth of my physical being, touches the screen, and I ended up ordering a new stove and a subordinate mistress. So not all bad.

One will try again - if I can find the bits of the phone.

File Manager is the most important app on your phone. It should be on one of your Home Screens. The icon is an open folder with a little green android on it. Touch this to open File Manager and review all your user folders and files. Downloads will usually be in the folder marked downloads. You can create folders, move files etc by using your Menu icon, which is a hard or soft icon consisting of a number of horizontal lines arranged to give the appearance of a menu.

If you do not have a File Manager icon on any of your Home Screens, then look for a hard or soft icon which has six small squares arranged like a waffle. Touch this to see your apps. Swipe sideways or up and down to see more apps. One of these should be your File Manager.

To get home, touch the Home icon, which is a waffle made of four squares.

You may need to get a stylus for poking with. A ball-point pen with cap on may be used.

Hope this is helpful.

Very strange, Mike. It's as though I've got a phone from a different planet. Four squares, yes, but it's not home. And no sign of a six square waffle or a file manager whatsoever.

I tried three different freebie file apps - they all load okay and then say, sorry, it's stopped working - which is what happened to the voice recorder apart from the useless one.

I haven't used the phone on the wi-fi until this session of messing with it, so I haven't missed much. But I don't understand why I haven't got anything as basic as a file management system. Heck, I was one of the promoters of X-Tree, in the early 80s so I wondered how something could have an OS and no means of driving it.

It's piqued my interest, but the book is taking 6 hours a day and playtime has to be fitted in.

If I search APPs in the System menu, I see a few apps - far more than listed on my apps popup screen - and most of which I don't want.

There are 40 apps on the pop up. Two or three of which I've used over the years.

The two things that I've successfully downloaded, I'm given the option of deleting, but on the others it only shows kb used etc. No control involved apart from clearing caches etc.

Oh, gawsh, it's 3:20 and it was only 2:20 when I started playing. It's still beside me asking to be picked up again.
