Grrr Drivers disc wont run after XP format

Hi all knowledgeable peeps,

I have a old laptop which i have reformatted the harddrive and re-installed XP on for my 3 year old to watch the cbeebies iplayer.

XP installed after a couple of attempts using the original restore disc, and its is up and running now. I have tried to install all the drivers using the supplied disc but the cd drive will not read the the disc. It has a go at it but wont start . I used 'my computer' to look at the D: drive but nothing is contained within it, even though the disc is in the drive, and it is trying to read the disc.

This is my first attempt at a re-install so forgive me if this is a stuipid question.

Cheers
TK

They're probably out of date anyway, can you not download any you need?

hmmm, i did have a go a trying that.
I was a little concerened about virus's etc though. I did download driver detective, but after downloading it all they wanted 30 dollars first. Being tight i though i would try the disc again & again.

Could anyone link me to a reputable site which will find the drivers i need on my computer and update them. Again i know this is probably basic stuff, but i am new to all this technobabble!

Many Thanks

TK

On an xp machine, navigate your way to device manager - to do so, click on start/then right click my computer and select manage from the dialog box that opens up and in the new window click on device manager.

Then a list of peripherals attached to your laptop will appear. In xp, any device with no driver installed will appear with an exclamation mark in a yellow circle next to it. Click on any such device and in the driver tab, click update driver automatically.

Windows will search for and install a driver as required and you'll be set.

This is not an infallible method, but should get you up & going for the majority of drivers. Anything left over, you can get from the manufacturers websites.

Thanks Sprog, didnt know about that.

I have tried to update the drivers, with no joy. The device update wizard cannot find software to update the driver(s).
It keeps asking for a disc, and i have ticked the box for it to check the microsoft website for updates?

The drivers are listed under other devices, and are :Mass Storage Controller, Multimedia Audio controller, PCI modem, SM Bus Controller & Video Controller (VGA Compatible).

These are the only one's with yellow explanation marks by them.

Any ideas chaps, your helkp is very much appreciated.

While you are rooting around in Sprogget's toolbox, I understand the CD drive shows no 'yellow'? Can you play ANY CDs in it, eg music? If not 'there', Google for 'CD Drive not seen XP' or 'missing'

While we are there, XP what (Home/Pro, SP?)

As I recall (not on xp anywhere anymore) you have to tel xp to search online for a driver or it defaults to looking for one on the system or on a disc, which would chime with the error you're receiving.

This may be of help:

They sound very much like mother board drivers, if not on the MS site then try the laptop manufacturers site to find model specific drivers.

t reconises the drive on 'my computer' and ran the xp restore disc ?
- yes, but does it now? Are you confirming it is still playing CDs?
The Google links will tell you that the CD drive can disappear after XP install. There are 'upper and lower filters' settings in the registry that seem to often go wrong. I have fixed 3 machines with 'them'. The motherboard drivers should be on the install disk from your manufacturer or on the recovery partition depending. What does the driver's handbook say?.

I tried some cd's last night, either the computer has no taste in music (some johnny cash & bob Dylan!) or the drive must not be working......

I have googled and tried microsoft fixit, which said the media is unreadable? (i Tried to different cd's which worked fine elsewhere) & the support link for drivers on fujitsu seimens website for the Amilo a1650 laptop, which is the one with the problem, is broken!

Any idea's?

edit: had another go at 'Fixit'
Quote : 'Troubleshooting is complete - we did not detect any issues. ??? Windows Media Player now reads paulo nutini! although it does say that it cannot play the cd due a problem with my sound device. Back to the driver issue?

Support link works for me. Can you confirm the drive shows in device manager and there is not a yellow ! ?

Found this in the user manual

Reinstalling Windows XP
You can reinstall the Windows XP operating system with the "Windows XP Recovery CD" and the
"Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD.
The instructions are provided on the case of the Recovery CD.
!
During the reinstall process your personal files and any installed programs will be deleted.
We advise that you backup your files to an external hard drive, or CD / DVD disk before
you start.
► Switch the notebook on.
► Press the F12 key when the message F2: Setup F12: Boot Menu appears on the
screen.
► Insert the "Windows XP Recovery CD" into the CD/DVD drive.
► Select the CD-ROM and press the Enter key.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
After the installation you must install all the drivers again. Some installed hardware components will
not be correctly supported until this has been done.
► Insert the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive.
The CD starts automatically.
► Click on the Desk Update button.
► Select Automatic driver installation (Express) and click Start installation.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
► Restart your notebook when the driver installation is completed.

and this on another page

If your drive is not recognized in Windows, please check whether the drive is listed and enabled in the system BIOS.

and I don't know if this affects you

Drive transfer mode is only PIO Item number: 23319917 Date: 18.01.2007 Description:
Optical - and harddisk drives only transfer in PIO mode, despite being set to use ´´DMA if Available´´. A defictive hardware can be excluded defintively. The BIOS settings are checked and also correct.
This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:
  • Windows XP is the operating system.
  • The drive supports DMA mode.
Solution:
To solve this issue, please folow these steps at your own risk:
  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit)
  2. Find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x (the last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003 ...)
  3. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values: MasterIdDataChecksum and
    SlaveIdDataChecksum
  4. Reboot the Computer. Windows will redetect the transfer mode.
Any help?

Wireless is black magic................

What of your BIOS setting?

If that is ok try uninstalling the drive from device manager and reboot - see if it locates a driver.

This is the 'hard' way of doing the MS Fixit you ran. Worth a try?

Log on to Windows by using an account that has administrator rights and permissions. Then, follow these steps. Step 1: Start Registry Editor loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts. Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); 1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. 2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet. 3. Expand Control, and then expand Class. 4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. 5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak. 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. 7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry: Are you sure you want to delete this value? The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step. Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry loadTOCNode(3, 'resolution'); 1. 5. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.

Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak. 6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. 7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry: Are you sure you want to delete this value? The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey. 8. Exit Registry Editor. Step 4: Restart the computer
