Support link works for me. Can you confirm the drive shows in device manager and there is not a yellow ! ?

Found this in the user manual

Reinstalling Windows XP
You can reinstall the Windows XP operating system with the "Windows XP Recovery CD" and the
"Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD.
The instructions are provided on the case of the Recovery CD.
!
During the reinstall process your personal files and any installed programs will be deleted.
We advise that you backup your files to an external hard drive, or CD / DVD disk before
you start.
► Switch the notebook on.
► Press the F12 key when the message F2: Setup F12: Boot Menu appears on the
screen.
► Insert the "Windows XP Recovery CD" into the CD/DVD drive.
► Select the CD-ROM and press the Enter key.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
After the installation you must install all the drivers again. Some installed hardware components will
not be correctly supported until this has been done.
► Insert the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD into the CD/DVD drive.
The CD starts automatically.
► Click on the Desk Update button.
► Select Automatic driver installation (Express) and click Start installation.
► Follow the instructions on the screen.
► Restart your notebook when the driver installation is completed.

If your drive is not recognized in Windows, please check whether the drive is listed and enabled in the system BIOS.

and I don't know if this affects you

Drive transfer mode is only PIO Item number: 23319917 Date: 18.01.2007 Description:
Optical - and harddisk drives only transfer in PIO mode, despite being set to use ´´DMA if Available´´. A defictive hardware can be excluded defintively. The BIOS settings are checked and also correct.
This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:
  • Windows XP is the operating system.
  • The drive supports DMA mode.
Solution:
To solve this issue, please folow these steps at your own risk:
  1. Open the Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit)
  2. Find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x (the last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003 ...)
  3. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values: MasterIdDataChecksum and
    SlaveIdDataChecksum
  4. Reboot the Computer. Windows will redetect the transfer mode.
Any help?
