Replacing HD in store bought puter?
Installing a new Hard Disk in nephews HP Pavilion Desktop Puter (lorra pobs with the old hard disk)
Operating system installed ok but what I am missing is drivers for Graphics Card Sound Card and Modem,modem and Graphic car not a problem the Graphics are Nvidia and I can download a driver for that,they are getting broadband so the internal modem is not needed,trouble is it appears to have a on board sound chip,and there is not a lot of information in device manager about what it is?
Anybody know if there is a website that has drivers for HP hardware?
The other possibility is to stick the old hard disk back in as a slave and try and find the drivers on that?

One could use Acronis True Image. From what I hear (never used it myself) it makes an image of everything your HD and can be used to make a clone of the HD - on your new HD, for example.

Tony you can also leave the old hard drive in if there is a cradle as a second slave drive..... I do this as it allows me to still access items of the old one until I eventually add another replacement drive and rotate them again....... that way you do not suddenly lose items off the old one

Well therein lies a problem,nephew bought this puter about six years ago and I remember him having problems with some worm virus,he very shortly thereafter bought a laptop so the machine has been more or less been sitting next door unused since then, I've pottered about with it a few times on and off and it seems ok to me, however he has given the puter to his Dad who is shortly to get broadband so I thought perhaps the best thing would be to renew the disk and operating system altogether,so I am reluctant to using anything from the exsisting hard disk
I've always built my own puters so I've never had this trouble,ie one has always had the driver disks for the kit I put it em,this being store bought off the shelf lit they don't supply the driver disks of course,they prefer the punters to return em to the shop for maintainance and charge the bugga's.

What is the exact model? You will probably find that XP drivers are already in the XP install CD for the hardware.

Thanks for that link chaps,the puter is HP Pavilion 7946 that HP site does not seem to have drivers for the sound chip or the modem,I have MFI motherboard in my latest machine and xp did not have drivers for that,ones new puter was silent until I remembered the CD that I had cast aside when I took said MB out of it's box and lo it indeed had drivers for the sound card,I suppose I could always buy a cheap PCI card and disable the on board sound and I have a few Modems lying about the place.

I'll get to the point eventually Drapes, but I can't remember where I got the driver from.
It's an age thing.
Since visiting Texas again, I've been digging out some of my stuff wondering if it still goes. My HP computer fired up as though it had been put away yesterday. However...
We had decided to pay for our Phone/and internet provider here, cos it was so much better than the UK ones that we have been victim to. Pay pay pay, get back then it works okay...for two f
ing days, then I get a message to say that my service had been diverted to a "There is a problem with your account." type message. At this point I lost it. Months of crappy service in the UK and now this after paying on the nail for months. The support man was just plain simple.

Aaaaaaaaaaaagh! (not you Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!) Aaaaaaaaaaaagh I said. If it can divert my service and display your offensive message, how the **** (I didn't say that, I just thought the **** bit) how on Earth can there be anything wrong with my wiring? 'Fair point' Says he. We delete all temp files and cookies and that makes the message go away, but no apology for virtually accusing me of not paying.
Anyway, all this makes me feel rather vulnerable, so when I see XP Pro advertised locally for $30 I thought I'll make a completely independent disc, ready to go. The validity of the XP I've discussed at length on the computer forum.
So, I had a clean EISA 400 gig Barracuda, and this probably bogus disc. (It is registered, and receives updates, but I'm not going to do anything but nose around in it before buying a kosher copy) The installation went smoothly, having partitioned the drive into three. But, there was no sound. I got the driver from HP, but did not keep a record of the exact location. It went in like a dream, and sounds fine.
I'm now stuck for printer drivers. HP seem to no longer support the old industry standard Laser Jet 4 P XP did, but with Pro, it's listed, but nothing happens. HP's 4000 series get it going, but it would be nice to have it right.
Now, your notion of getting drivers off the old disc might save the day. But it's not like the old days when drivers were simple is it? Seems that they arrive in a mini installation package. Anyone know if pointing the "look for disc" question to a simple file will suffice?
In the mean time I'll look to see if I can find where I got the sound driver from.

Thank you chaps you are a cluster of diamonds,about to bring the puter here for potterin about with,the formatting and loading of the operating system ont new hard disk went suspiciously well so one is expecting trouble,

Currently going thru' the same trials helping 4 friends(!) , trying to rebuild anything from F-F-F-fujifitsueefffff laptops to an new Dell (13 months old!) and HP nonsense as well.
The answer my friend is in Gogggggle (as always)

Tony, you say you haven't BBand? - it should provide the answer to the question (:answer - 42 by the way) and it is the very fastest way of bypassing anoraks like me who hover aboot giving spurious advice. For a man who obviously knows where all the bodies are, I'm sure SWH is not eating all of your revenue..
At least then you can cut to the chase..........

Right then,one is prunning on next doors puter as we speak,the sound chip worked unbidden so XP must have drivers forrit as norm,did have to remove the modem and bung in a motorolla one that was in me box of bits,loaded the motorolla drivers and bobs yer thingy,things have gone to well.
The only real problem I had was figuring out the topological puzzle one has to solve before one can get at the old had disk,ie removing the plastic front without wrecking the bloody case,these bastards obviously don't like civilians messing with their kit.
Anyway all done and dusted thanks for the help.
Gonna dowload the nvidia drivers from the HP site now.
