Thanks for that link chaps,the puter is HP Pavilion 7946 that HP site does not seem to have drivers for the sound chip or the modem,I have MFI motherboard in my latest machine and xp did not have drivers for that,ones new puter was silent until I remembered the CD that I had cast aside when I took said MB out of it's box and lo it indeed had drivers for the sound card,I suppose I could always buy a cheap PCI card and disable the on board sound and I have a few Modems lying about the place.
