If you, rather than starting off with communicating like a civilised adult, would start off by making a scene instead on a flight where I was in charge of the cabin, IŽd not be inclined in any way at all to accommodate you. Never mind the circumstance.
Behave like a Neanderthal on board, and get treated accordingly.
Behave like an abusive Neanderthal and get off-loaded ASAP.
Politely insist on what is right, at a time when the crew can still take effective action, and you will succeed.
1. Since when can a CC offload a pax? If any of my crew would off load a pax without consulting me as Cpt first, then that CC would be left on the tarmac as well for non-adherance to SOP and law. Only the Cpt can offload!

2. It is a piss poor CC who kicks off as soon as they meet a frustrated pax who complains. A good CC will talk the individual calm and resolve the problem, regardless how intelligent or not that pax is.

3. We have many big-sized pax traveling with Ezy everyday and it is very rarely a problem. I had a pax who needed 2 seats one day, and the great team i had in the cabin sorted that with a smile. Problems are merely a opportunity to make a difference

There's a good number of you within this thread alone who completely disgust me. What a bunch of pompous !

Everyone is different and we all come in different shapes and sizes...deal with it!

I thought PPRuNe was a forum on which people from all backgrounds could post a question or find out information; from those (like myself) who want to become Airline Pilots, to casual passengers who just have a query, like the OP.

To receive some of the replies which have been posted so far, is unbelievable...and to think some of you may even be PROFESSIONAL Pilots and that is what disgusts me even more!!

Having read various other posts though, PPRuNe does seem to be overflowing with 'Sky Gods' and those who believe they are the perfect human beings...Yeah right!

Been on Vacation for a week or so (Thank You - It was Lovely).

Returned to this...

The crap stops, as of now. You will discuss this, and any other subject, with courtesy and, preferably, intelligence or forfeit your right to post on PPRuNe - Life is simply too short

Question for the intolerant -
I'm not overweight but I am over-tall! If you end up with me sat next to you I will probably annoy you with my lengthy limbs. Should I be charged extra? Should I have surgery so that I no longer annoy you, or maybe just ban me from flying until I sort myself out?

I have some experience of this and thought I'd share it with the thread. A fews years back I was flying what I'd call "medium haul"; a 4 hour flight during the day. I was flying economy and was sat towards the rear of the aircraft with 2 empty seats next to me.

I watched everyone get on and nobody came near "my" two emty seats. As a tall person I get quite uncomfortable in an economy seat (lack of knee room) and was looking forward to stretching out once we were under way. And then the 2 missing pax turned up. The reason for their late arrival was that they were clinically obese and had trouble making their way up the aisle towards the rear of the aircraft. I immediately knew these two people were destined to sit in "my" empty seats and had visions of a tortuous 4 hour journey with cramped knees and being squashed up against the cabin wall.

I immediately attracted the attention of the cabin crew nearest me and explained that there wasn't a realistic chance of the 3 of us sitting comfortably in our allocated 3 abreast seating. She agreed with me but pointed out that the flight was full.

I said I would refuse to take my seat and would rather deplane than endure 4 hours of torture. My pleas (and note: this was out of earshot of the two obese pax) were heard by two young girls, both slim and considerably shorter than me. One offered to sit in my seat as she thought that she wouldn't be as inconvenienced as I was surely to be.

Problem resolved we departed.

Upon my return I explained to an overweight colleague of mine what had happened. She pointed out that she always booked 2 seats as a) she didn't want to inconvenience others and b) she didn't want the embarrasment of someone else complaing that she had "overflowed" on to their seat and c) it was more comfortable for her, especally when trying to eat the inflight meal.

Some airlines now ask their larger pax to book 2 seats!

I think the issue here is about not inconveniencing other passengers. If the person sat next to an obese pax is not able to fully enjoy their seat (i.e. they have to lean away from the obses pax or are squashed by the obese pax or they have permanent skin-to-skin contact with the obese pax that they would rather avoid) then it is up to the obese pax to book 2 seats.

There is no need to call obese pax lardy-arses or anything else. They are obese, just as I am tall and others are short or under-weight. However there is a right for pax that fit into their seats to complain should they have to share that seat with the pax sitting next to them.

We had a rather big passenger on board last week who gave my cabin crew grief that our seats were too narrow. Given all 737 are six abreast in economy and there is a standard aisle width I was a bit nonplussed by this. I suggested that if he kept complaining they advise him to buy two seats next time. Definite contender for passenger of the month....awarded to whoever behaves worst on one of my flights....smoking in the toilet/offloaded for being drunk when boarding/standing up during takeoff run etc.

I am probably smaller than average and was picked out on a Europe-SA flight last year to move to sit between two very large people in the centre block of a cabin configured 3-4-3, as the person sitting between them, rather larger than I am, had complained that he was going to be 'squashed'. The manner in which the FA asked me to move was far from pleasant and as I had booked a window seat I felt that this was unacceptable and refused to do so.

My attitude is that I'm sorry for people who are extra large, either in girth or height, but regardless of whether they are like that genetically or through gluttony, it's not my problem and I won't be the victim of it.

Why? Would you have to stick your legs into my foot space? Or hang your arms over the armrest onto my seat? If so, buy a first class ticket.

I'm short, so leg room isn't an issue. But I have broad shoulders. On long flights I pay for a wider first class seat. I've tried getting an aisle seat and hanging into the aisle on short hops. But that's uncomfortable and I get grief from the CC for doing that.

The question of overweight flights is an interesting one.

The standard weights for adults are currently: 88kgs for a man and 70kg for a woman (scheduled, not charter flights or all adult, I know).

That's just under 14 stone for a man and 11 stone for a woman. That is their clothed weight - so take off an allowance for clothes and personal possessions in pockets and the actual body weights are in the order of 13 stone for a man and 10 stone for a woman.

Next time you go on a flight see how many people fit that weight range?

More importantly, how many are over that weight?

More importantly still, how many are there who weigh less than that weight to compensate for those who are heavier?

I've see many people on board who exceed 13 stone/10 stone, but not many who weigh 6 stone to compensate for those who are 20 stone/14 stone!!!

I'm sure many flights are overweight and illegal but it will never be proven as only 'standard weights' are used in weight & balance and performance calculations.

Furthermore, try telling a regulating body to increase the 'standard weights' and then inform the airlines that seats will have to be removed or baggage/fuel calculations revised to accommodate this increase in weight!

It'll never happen - airlines don't want to know things like that - they're more interested in 'cramming them in' and playing lip service to environmental issues.

Check in and Weigh in

I thinks the solution relies upon weighing the passenger and their luggage at the point of checking in. Anyone whose combined weight is more than 120kgs has to purchase an additional seat.

This would work perfectly. Those in the body weight range 90kgs - 120kgs would have to either pack very economically or pay up. Those weighing over 120kgs (the clinically obese - 19 stone) would have to buy 2 seats to fly.

Adjust the limits to suit the airline - tight cramped low cost airlines could set the total weight at 110kgs. Easyjet and Ryan Air could set it at 100kgs.

It requires lowering the baggage belt at check in to ground level so that the pax can stand on it with their baggage. No embarrassment, no offence casued.

I can see both points of view here. I don't think Judd indicated he would offload them and I'm sure he would liase with you, the Captain, so that you could come to some conclusion or solution.

Cabin crew shouldn't 'kick off' with frustrated passengers, you're right. However, as a pilot, you will rarely see or here unreasonable behaviour, language and snide personal comments that cabin crew can sometimes receive. I've been sworn at simply for saying "hello, I just need to see your boarding card'. Now in that situation, I remain calm but I don't beat around the bush in telling that pax to watch his language, it can be done quietly and calmly. The I try to find out what the problem is in order to see if there is something I can do. 99% of the time they will calm down and sometimes apologise even. If they continue with that kind of behaviour though I too would lose patience and be less inclined to help. Despite the stresses and strains that can be experienced in the airport there is no excuse for being extremely rude and abusive. Judd is absolutely correct in saying that in most cases a polite complaint will help your cause more.

It's interesting to note that when pilots do hear such instances of rude behaviour I've known some, with admirable intentions, to go OTT with the pax when the cabin crew could probably have diffused the situation better.

It's a balancing act.

Hi

I am an easyJet Captain and err, well its tricky, but I am quite fat, 6 foot tall and 100kg, 39 inch waist.

But since I am deemed fit to fly by an aviation doctor every year I suppose its reasonable to let the crew on the day use their judgement and diplomacy in managing large passengers.

Of course I do get a special big seat up the front and I am on a diet and go to circuit training. In fact, I think people have started coming to the gym just to watch me get whipped into a sweating trembling wreck every week by a short arsed sadistic female fitness instructor.

She should work for RyanAir, perhaps she does?

We already have test units for hand baggage, why not a test unit for the pax?

A row of three economy seats, bolted into the floor at the end of the check-out counters. A skinny mannikin in the middle, seat the "suss" pax on either side:

If the mannikin implodes or the seat belt doesn't fit, our respected pax pays more.

I'm afraid the plump really should pay more. Ditto people who foist their howling, crapping babies on the rest of us in the cabin should also pay more.

And anyone who turns up late to the airplane shoud be hit with a late charge, payable in cash, which then subsidises the bar-cart for those of us who managed not to affect the comfort of anyone else.

Crying babies, loud and annoying people, strangers sitting next to me who want to strike up a conversation when I'm not in the mood.. they all annoy me and affect my comfort. Should they all be made to pay extra?

Some of you talk absolute nonsense.

Agree entirely. Seems there are some very self-righteous, intolerent folk around. Time to learn to rub along and just accept it is part of life's rich pattern. If you feel the need to select your fellow passengers, charter a biz jet!!

Surely the question to ask is can a little easy jet aircraft takeoff? Size 26? F me. If I saw a lard arse walk down the airbridge to my a/c and I was at MZFW I'd be rejecting the loadsheet until this fat bird had been weighed - medical condition or not.

Bloody hell- size 26! I still can't get over it ( pun intended)

Allow me to explain myself

Ok guys, I thought I should write a little extra here because some of you may think my post above is a wind up or troll-like. Also I have just read some of the previous posts and saw that TightSlit has poked her nose in once again and I don't want to get on the wrong side of her again.

Firstly TightSlit, this isn't crap and shouldn't be stopped. It's a very valid discussion that is more relevant now due to the ever expanding waistlines of individuals- mine included. I think you need to chill out from telling people what they can and can't discuss here.

Whenever this topic rears its ugly head, I count down the seconds until some namby pamby leftist starts going on about the friend of a friend's second-cousin once-removed who has a medical condition that makes them fat hence they shouldn't pay more money when traveling.

This might make good reading in hello magazine or whatever-magazine women read whilst munching on a Special-K diet bar at lunch, but its just plain nonsense when you look at the bigger picture.

The world is built around the average man/ woman. The majority can fit into a seat just fine and the legroom is adequate. I am 6'4 and in economy I have a tough time. It's called genetics- daddy was tall so I got tall. It's a condition and if I want the comfort of extra leg room, it's up to me to buy business. Just like a large person who unfortunately has a genetic makeup that causes them to be obese, they should also have to pay for an extra seat.

Large people may have to pay extra for shoes on the Internet, just like midgets may need to pay extra during online shopping etc etc. Life is not fair so lets all get over it.

Lastly I truly agree that for certain people, they should be weighed/ or have them try and sit in a test seat at check in. I take the MaxZFW seriously and I would like to know that the standard weights are kept to as close as possible which means a lard arse well above 78kg (HKcad)must be designated 2 seats. I'm fed up with all this anti discriminatory BS.
