How to stay calm?

Hi! All!
It's so delightful for me to read through all the threads, I started with Iulia's very first thread, I am very surprised your sincerity in sharing every bits of yours' experience! You guys are really great!

I am from Hong Kong and always want to be a Virgin's crew. Virgin invited me to join their recreitment day on coming Monday. But I always have some difficulty in being myself comfortably in group interview. I can't help thinking people are assessing me, I get nervous easily.
Do you have any suggestions in adjusting my attitude to be right for group interview?

Weird, isnt it? I ve been crew for 3 years in a HK airline, currently I am a tutor of Art and English, my students are from 3 to 15, I always be with people and I feel it's joyful. But only when I go for Virgin's interview, which is very important for me, I am very nervous.

Please help me!

Wannabe and STF.
Just a quick note to say... "HAVE A BALL AT TRAINING!"
Congratulations again for getting thru

Good luck to those going to VRD's or awaiting the outcome from their VRD (like me for example...hehe). That includes those going for REX and J*!

Hope to see you all 'up there' soon!

Hostee, you're next!

Hey Hostee,

Thanks for the gorgeous message! I am getting really nervous tonight,. the night before the big first day of training.

WannabeVB doesn't have a computer at the moment, but I saw her today as we did a dummy run out to the airport to see how long it is and the best way to get there.

It is nearly 8pm, so soon I will be going to organise my outfit for tomorrow, along with my lunch for tomorrow, and go to bed. I don't know how Im going to sleep!!!

Thanks, again, but you're next. We are waiting for you to join us in the sky.

HK's Virgin Atlantic Recruitment

DJ tibby,

I will be going for Virgin Atlantic's Recruitment Day tomorrow. The interview flow, is almost the same as Virgin Blue. That's why I enjoyed reading the threads so much, especially when I need confidence and support, I learned so much.

Erm... Hong Kong based Virgin Atlantic crews will only operate flight from HKG-LHR and HKG-SYD.
I worked for Cathay Pacific, a Hong Kong based airline for 3 years. I joined and left Cathay because I always look forward to more diversity in life.

Virgin Atlantic is a very good choice, there I will work with people of completely culture and working style, it should be very exciting and more glamours come.

OK! Gotta prepare well for tomorrow. I will keep you post.

Dreaming for VS & eagle01

Hey there everyone else inbetween too!

Sorry guys, haven't had much time to reply to Pm's..!

I've been alright, for those of you who've asked keeping busy around the house, that sort of thing, it looks like I'll definately end up going to uni and doing that librarianship afterall, and have to wait those awful 12mnths until I can reapply to VB and REX. In Jetstar I have little faith...

On a lighter and more brighter note, today is wannabevb and STF first day of training... how awesome is that!! Girls, you gotta fill us in when you get the chance to catch a breath today

Goodluck to everyone awaiting results... hosteee! And anyone else that I can't remember off the top of my head

I have an idea, which may not exactly be put into action anytime soon... but my parents are from Europe, and they are dual citizens, and I tried to become a Romanian citizen through the embassy here in Canberra, but I can't because at the moment, my parents passports for Ro are expired, so I'd have to wait for them to renew their passports, then apply for Romanian citizenship, which is ridiculous doing it here through this embassy it takes approximately 1yr, whereas if you do it oversea's in the capital, it takes like 30days. So perhaps if I end up going oversea's at the end of this year, or next, I can apply in person which would be easier and they would accept faster, with my parents birth certificates as well as my own etc. Its a bit of a long shot.... but then I could work overseas! Clever aren't I LOL its a thought, perhaps if I become really desperate, I'll give it a whirl

Take care and have a lovely day peeps!

Haven't been clothes shopping with him in a while actually... besides, I don't think I'll be recieving any interviews for other airlines anytime soon... BUT if I so happen to, I have a few outfits I can wear

It's my big day!

When wannabevb and stf are enjoying their first day of training,
I am having my big day,
join the Virgin Atlantic Interview in Hong Kong.

The flow was pretty much easier than you guys mentioned here.
It was said Virgin is employing so many people in Hong Kong, around 60, with a very tight schedule, probably the way of selection should be simplified.

The Interview was held in a hotel. I thought I would be very nervous, instead, I was all exited in the morning. I was smiling happily all the time.
There were about 40 people.
We split into two groups, got into different rooms.
After simple self-introduction by each of us,
we were asked to interview each other some questions,
which can be very silly,
like "which superstar would you like to be?"

I beared in mind Iulia's and all of your tips. I should be active and fly around, listen attentively and ask questions, eyes contact and smile, never did I forget.

After that we sat down and started a group discussion.
A list of comments a pax may feedback to Virgin. Let us prioritize these 10 comments.
We priortize in this way:
1, Offering a sense of fun in flying
2, Money for valued
3, Good food and beverage
4, Sit-back entertainment
5, Kid's travel pad
6, Free amenity kits
7, Wide selection of destination
8, Attractive uniform

We are asked to present the topic. I like the first one in particular, sense of fun, what makes Virgin stay ahead in the market, a very unique character as an airline.

Afterwards, it's the time of paperworks. I think you guys from Aussie may have to fill up these for a London Airport ID Pass, too.
It's a heap of papers.
Cross and Tick, Yes and No, to authorize UK's airport department to check if we are "terrorists".

Finally, 3 names were called. I predicted they could not make it through the final interview, they did not smile so much, they seemed not enjoying the activities so much. Three girls walked away, and Mr. Interviewer glanced from left to right, as if looking for someone who should be named and out. OH! Luckily, the rest of us all stayed for final interview.

Final interview was 2 to 1. 1 was writing every comments and remarks, 1 was asking questions and listening hard.
I was asked only 4 questions, which are standard ones:
1, Why would you like to join Virgin Atlantic?
2, Tell us a time when you faced an angry passenger.
3, Tell us a time when you had a good teamwork.
4, Tell us why Virgin Atlantic would feel proud of you.
5, Do you have any question?

...I asked what kind of achievement you would like to see from my role?... they told me, being positive and flexibility are both important elements.
They said I had these characters, "You had made half way to Virgin Atlantic."

It's really a good interview. I grade myself 7, my answer was not perfect, but I swear I tried my best to integrated your every bits of ideas into my way of thinking.

Thank you everyone!

We will wait for 4 to 6 months... long time, to see whether we are successful. Meanwhile, I go back to my studies, I am attempting for two languages qualification test, Japanese and Korean, wish me good luck.

Day one at Virgin Blue Training

Hey guys,

As promised, I said I would keep you updated during training... so here goes.....
4 weeks (including 3 Saturdays) and 4 days to go until the end of training.

Day 1 - INDUCTION

It was really interesting and there are like only 20 people in our group. 18 girls and 2 boys. There were 4 tables of 5 people on each. It is kind of better I think to have a small group than a bigger group. The trainers are really nice. The lady that interviewed me made an appearance - so I knew a familiar face amongst the trainers!!

We learnt about the company, the CEO, the CCO and the COO but don't ask me what these terms stand for! We watched a few DVD's regarding the company and the management. Overall, it looks like a fantastic company to work for.

I ran into a couple of people that I had met at the interviews... (a few surprises, a few "OMG you already look like a flight attendant..."
I also ran into a couple of girls with whom I used to fly at my previous flying job.

The dip in the swimming pool (where we show off our talents in the swimming department) is 3 weeks from today - God help me. Does anyone know how slippery the life raft gets? Does anyone know how tricky it is to get into the life raft??? Does anyone know of a good hairdresser that is open on a Monday evening until around 7pm?????

They were sooooooo nice - they provided lunch - which was whatever food you wanted off the trolley (yes.. we got to sample a few menu items free of charge) - (and let me tell you now... Thankgod they don't provide lunch everyday, cos then they would have to provide gym membership or Jenny Craig membership to all of us!)

I think the real learning about the aircraft and its equipment starts tomorrow. We already got homework . NOT HAPPY JAN!

Anyway, I am off to - cos tomorrow is another big day. My first exam is on Friday so wish me luck. Eek. it is 1.15 am gotta run.

Take care. Installment #2 will be after training tomorrow - same time, same channel.

STF

PS - Julz, thanks for that very sweet sms you sent me this morning. I got it before training started, and I showed it to WannabeVB - and she loved it and said to say hi to you. I hope you are well. Take care. You know who.

Heya guys!

Well done on your Virgin Atlantic interview, by the sounds of it, it seems you did great! but waiting anywhere between 4-6mnths..!? Aghhh!

hehehe STF thanks for the diary entry wow! need I mention how much you and wannabevb are envied at the moment, and not just by myself?!!

Today at school, we were given forms/info for applying online through VTAC for our uni/tafe preferances... felt like bursting into tears... my course as a librarian will take me 3yrs, and then I may as well continue and do some double-degree... eventhough being a librarian would mean I make over twice as much as a FA, I hate the thought of all those extra years of study... I was hoping to take a break, work... that sort of thing. But I shouldn't, because if I defer then I will taste real money and not want to go back to study ever again.
They say things happen for a reason... usually, for the best. I'm still scratching my brain, trying to think, how can me going to uni rather then get in as a FA be for the best? My bf tells me to quit complaining and just go ahead with it... oh well....

But its great to hear that its happening, its possible, and STF and wannabevb are just two of many future FAs! This thread is great it motivating and reassuring one another, and if it hadn't been for all the people posting on here, I'd have honestly started to think that becoming a FA were impossible!

xox

Hi guys,

as you all know by now I made it to the second half of the VRD last Thursday and have now just received an email from them saying that my application has progressed past the Recruitment Day... What does that mean? Does that mean they then check my references and I go for a medical? I'm a bit confused. It says that this is not an indication that you have been succesful and could be unsuccessful at any stage. Please explain....

FYD - I didn't get that e-mail and I was unsuccessful. Maybe the successful ones got the same thing? My process was: VRD to the end of the day > Waiting for five days including weekend > e-mail saying I was unsuccessful.

It seems a bit confusing with what they've said in yours. Though it's def. a positive. I think most people that go with VB get rejected quite early on, and you got a different e-mail so i would stay positive!

Well I guess it's better than a no letter, however that has to be the most wishy washy letter that i've ever seen from a HR department.

Converted to english it says, you haven't got a job, you may not get the job, don't think that you might get the job......Yet.....but you might get the job!

Why not just say that your application is being processed and we will be in touch in the future?!?!

Exactly what i think!

I have been told however, that the next part is the reference and the medical. Fingers crossed that this is the next stage as I am 26, healthy as i'm ever going to be and have good r/ships with my references. Oh god it is such a tease that letter!!!! Are they trying to make this process as painful as possible!!!

Like anyone ever keeps it confidential!

Follow your dreams,

That letter basically is saying that the process has been delayed, and that they don't know when they are going to take it or not take it to the next level... so rather than tell you one way or the other, they are taking the easy way out by "keeping you posted" every fortnight or so, until they decide what is happening on their end. It isn't a no - so don't panic just yet. And don't listen to the comment made by hairy potatoes or whatever the name was... if you don't understand something... speak up!

DAY 2 of training at DJ

OMG - today the real stuff began. We have already covered one chapter and have been asked to revise that one chapter and go over the next one already!!! Exam #1 on Friday. EEK!!!

Today we also learned the theory of flight. Honestly some of the dvd's they showed us today ... about planes landing awkwardly.. or badly... if no one shows up tomorrow to training - I will know why !!

We also got told today that we have 15 points. If we are late, we lose points, if we get 98% or 99% or 100% on our exams, we gain points, if we aren't groomed to the standard that they wish, we lose points - but if we exceed standards and expectations - we gain points. etc... etc...
I think that freaked out a lot of people in my group - everyone was really quiet after learning that.

I am expecting to lose all my points this week

The training is all group based learning so we do everything in groups of 5 and 4. It involves alot of standing up and presenting information back to the class. Good in some ways, but it seems that everything we are doing is done in that way.

I really need to start revising and studying so - I am going to say goodbye now.

Stay tuned for the next episode of training at Virgin Blue.. when you will hear STF say ...
"OH MY GOD - THERE IS NO COFFEE LEFT !!!"

take care everyone. Tomorrow we start at 4 pm. We train until 2 in the morning. At least I can sleep in!

SEE YA!

Heya peeps

FYD, I think puff worded the letter from VB much better then they did! haha its more understandable, and definately as Sylphie says A POSITIVE! better then a direct 'no' letter!!

Hairy wha? Who cares... theoretically, this entire forum should not exist! I am pretty sure that more then in half the threads posted on pprune, private information is divulged in regards to one airline or another, and that is a breach in some form or another... FYD was just worried, and pasted it all.

Now lets keep this thread warm and comforting as is renowned, shall we?

omgshhh STF! sounds like sooo much fun! wow, up til 2am tomorrow, like a night owl, that would be so unusual and exciting!! But what on earth will ya's be doing at that time of night? Studying, exercises..?

xox me!!!

ps- sharap about the points STF, you know you'll be fiiiiine!!

losing all the points in one week???

STF, readying your dairy I remembered how it felt when I was trained in my ex-airline, though Virgin is always better than the one I used to belonging to.
You won't lose all 15 points, will you? You will be getting better.

Iulia, my situation is similar to you.
I graduated from High School, I got into an airline and worked for 3 years. If you were accepted by Virgin, congratulation, and I really do think your flying life with virgin will compensate or even better than the glamours of university. BUTBUTBUT, if not work for virgin, like mine... erm... I'm afraid you may want to quit by the end of all...

I mean... as an ex-crew, I think I should only commit myself to a "GOOD AIRLINE", as a life-long career.

My ex-airline was quite mean to crews. For example, we are forced to retired at 45, age discrimination is obvious, but ridiculously it exists.

I gotta leave the airline anyway. But my worry is, after 3 years of flying and just High School level, what kind of job I can do? Am I stuck here forever?

If I am not accepted by Virgin this time, it means I have to follow my back up plan of studying, which is more difficult as I don't have much money. Of course I don't feel regret that I quit my ex-airline, but I am ordinarily want to have an easy life and Virgin would accomodate my "laziness ".

Yes, life goes on with reasons, usually for something better! At least my laziness will be toughen up.
