All the success all the way to EK. It's a great airline with lovely people. I wish I would be selected as you were going to attend one in one month time.

Al Fattan Building
Apparently a friend of mine has been allocated to Al Fattan building in Al Qusais II as she's leaving next week, anyone with information on the building except for the location? I know there seems to be a metro station several blocks away, what about the apartments themselves?
Any information would be good!

To those of you who are to come!
Hey guys, I am almost finished with A380 training. Only 4 days left. My special recomendation to all of you is to come prepared.
Bring as much money as you can from home. They will give you money, but you really have to manage yourself carefully, so if you can save anything and bring with you, it will be helpful.
Bring the foods you like, or things that you are not sure to find here. Lots of things are available in Dubai, but when you are new it is hard to be moving around and finding things.
Also for the girls, bring hair pins, nets, and ticktacks. You have no idea how difficult it is to find hair pins in here. At least I haven't found a good source, and most crew buy it outstation, so perhaps it will be easier for you to bring it from home.
To those who already have access to the portal, LEARN YOUR 3 LETTER AIRPORT CODES. We were only informed to learn them all on the last week, plus all the stuff we were learning, too much for the head, so if you can learn it now, it will be beneficial to you. Also learn the PHONETIC ALPHABET from heart. That is NEED to know.
If anyone have any major concerns, just email me. Will be happy to assist.
Good luck to you all
Dany

Will live in Al Qusais
Hi!
IŽve just been notified IŽll be located in Obaidulla Building 6, Al Qusais.
I looked for it in Google Earth and it seems to be very far away from everything and surrounded by an industrial area.
Only good thing is just a couple kilometers away from the airport.
Does anybody has more extended information about this place?
Thanks a lot!

All Fattan Building - Qusais
(NOTE: It's not Al Faltat, Mankool area!)
I've been to this building last week visiting a new girl.
It's close to the airport. Going to work will take around 35 minutes, though because the crew bus stops at many other EK buildings. Going home will take 10 minutes only.
The building has 6 floors. It has a brownish/redish colour outside. The building looks nice, it has terracotta style inside. (Many colours - I mean the buildings has many colours -, old fashioned lamps, you will see.) They should have put some flowers and plants inside and around. You will really miss the green: it's in the desert, you will only see sand, cars are parking in the sand. It's not a "posh" area.
However there is a little park and baksetball court just across the street. It's good for running in the winter. There is a Spinney's supermarket 5 minutes from the building. I think the metro station is a bit far to walk in the summer (only in the summer, might take 10 minutes) but you can see the station from the top of the building. There is a Spa downstairs. There are some restaurants and you can order home delivery.
There is a nice pool on the top, although it's not really big. The gym is great, in my opinion.
Apartments are 3-bedrooms. All bedrooms are the same size, normal size (not tiny but not huge) and you will have your own bathroom. Enough wardrobes. (You will find that rooms in some buildings are bigger: Government Building, Garhoud or Manazel Al Barsha has bigger rooms, as well. But Millenium Tower or Manazel Tower on Mankool Road has rooms with the same size.) Bathroom is fine. The living room is big but not huge. Windows are all very dirty everywhere in the flat, it could be annoying. (Well, and not much view...) My friend put up another curtain (you know, what we have in Europe, this see-through curtain) which made the room much friendlier. That flat seemed to be a little dark which is better than having the sunshine: you will need your sleep in a dark and cool room. The curtains are very good - thick and keep the heat out - but not good enough if you have the Eastern room. (You might need to use eyeshade.) You might need to use earplugs, as well, if the flatmates and noise of the street or the airconditioning bothers you.
There is a storage room, quite big. There might be one or two tiny balconies. It's good if you smoke or there is a party in the house.

Has anyone re-applied without waiting for 6 whole months (in the event you didn't make it earlier in OD/AD) and made it through to the FI and got their GC? Would love to hear It's so hard go wait esp when there's so many ODs going on these days...

Thanks for the info, Mari, great as always! Good that the residents have their own bathrooms, Google Map shows a whole empty block next to the building, and you're right, it looks like it's in the desert! But they also had pictures of the park and the pergola thing there, looks lush, but maybe not in summer lol..
I'll pass the info on to my mate, she'll be excited about the description of the interiors.. and from what I have read here and what you have posted, it's good that the rooms are of regular size!
VPN
Being that it is, I believe all internet connections are routed via a server with Etisalat that blocks certain kinds of content. Would it be possible to apply for a Virtual Private Network in Dubai, or is that only possible from overseas? I'd like to consider the option before leaving for the Sandpit.
Any suggestions?

Yes, you should download witopia (www.witopia.net) and you will have all the blocked sites! It costs like 30-50 USD per year, very cheap. It really works!

Article in the Sydney Morning Herald
Hello everyone. I Just thought I'd post something that was in the Sydney Morning Herald a week or so ago. I've been meaning to post it for a while now, but just remembered to do it.
Booming Emirates, Etihad to create 60,000 new jobs
July 12, 2010
Emirates and Etihad, the two major carriers of the United Arab Emirates, plan to create almost 60,000 new jobs over the next decade to meet their rapid growth, a newspaper reported on yesterday.
"It took us 25 years to get to 40,000 employees, but in the next 10 years we will double that to 80,000," The National quoted Rick Helliwell, vice president of recruitment at Emirates, as saying.
He said the Dubai-based carrier, the largest in the Middle East, will actually require 60,000 new employees over the decade, after factoring in current staff who retire or move on.
Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which currently has 8000 employees, will need to increase its workforce to 27,000 staff by 2020 when all its planes on order have been delivered, the paper said.
The Emirates fleet should more than double from its current 149 planes to 300 by 2020, according to the daily, including 32 Airbus A380 superjumbos ordered in June in a contract worth $US11.5 billion ($A13.1 billion).
Dubai International Airport has established itself as the Middle East's busiest airport, handling 42 million passengers in 2009. A second Dubai airport was opened last month, but will be confined to cargo traffic until March.
Etihad, which made its maiden flight in November 2003, now has a fleet of 53 aircraft serving 63 destinations. It has a large list of orders, including 28 to be delivered between 2011 and 2014.
In addition to Emirates and Etihad, the oil-rich Gulf state has flydubai, a sister company of Emirates, and the Sharjah-based Air Arabia. Both are low-cost operators.
The Middle East's travel market has bucked a global downturn trend throughout the global financial crisis, maintaining healthy growth figures.
