Grrr Logbook error Adivice needed

Hi There

I have just passed 1000 hours, this has coincided nicely with coming to the end of my first log book.

Much to my frustration upon adding up all the columns there is an error of 40 hours when compared to my total time. I thought i had been exceptionally diligent in adding up my times accurately it seems somewhere along the way some errors all be it small have crept in and have cumulatively caused a mismatch.

I'd rather not recalculate every page of the book so would it be best to simply write this time off at the start of the new logbook? How diligent are the CAA in checking hours when it comes to the eventual award of my ATPL or are they really looking at things like PICUS being signed off?

Perhaps I'm being too honest, however having worked so hard to get here the last thing i want to be accused of is being a pencil pilot.

Any help would be much appreciated

Now if you're into statistics, re-calculate it to retire and know your exact hours and minutes flown...

If not, I would just leave out the 40 and take the lower of the two values and continue from there. Nobody really cares whether you have 1500, 1540 or 5000 when sending in your ATPL application. You have to pass all the requirements, and usually send in copies of the last 2-3 pages of your logbook to proof the hours, not dozens. Plus eventually relevant other pages such as the ones with simulator checks signed off.

Still, I'm sure you'll be fine. Not like every other pilot never got it wrong out there.

Locate the error(s), make a time correction (e.g. - 2.4 hrs PIC column) and an explanatory note on next line in your logbook.

It's just me with an OCD for numbers

But a suggestion..

I started using Logbook Aero a few months ago and it revealed that my counting up abilities are best not mentioned...

Concur with above, go back and fix it.
Also check spelling in the process.

Who gives a **** ? Start the new log book with the corrected time with a note in order to remind you 25 years from now, how bad you were at additions..The rest is literature ...

As an aside you don't need to send in your logbook anymore for licence issue, just a declaration from someone in your company who confirms you have the required hours. Even so, just go back and find the error. In hindsight you really should run a cross check when completing each page...!

Exactly! In all the years I have been flying (must be 37 now) nobody ever wanted to see my logbook. I never made a photocopy of any page of any of my logbooks either. Nor is there anybodys signature in any of my logbooks. I know at least one of my colleagues who has no logbook at all since at least twenty years. No one cares. You pass your checkrides and don't do stupid things and everything will be fine

Who really cares? As long as it looks kosher, what you have is legitimate and you have more than enough time for the issue of your ATPL it doesn't matter. Don't even bother trying to look for the error. Instead, spend the time more constructively by participating in a beer rental scheme.

@what next,

are you sure? In the old days, how did you renew your licence with the LBA without Form blabla (whatever it was) which stated the hours flown during the last twelve months. How did you get that signed by someone authorized without having him look at least casually over your logbook? Buddy in your flight club or your company?

a story of mine.. I started with a french ppl and their infamous "approved" logbook, then went to the USA for various reasons, got an FAA ticket an another logbook, flew N aircrafts, and did my french commercial in the same time, running more or less two logbooks in parallel, because in that time Excel was not invented, it was Multiplan at best; so after some years of flying and 1000's of hours flown type ratings here, type there ATP in UsA, ATPL in France, then JAA transformation...the lot 20 years down, getting into the largest flying club of the planet ( Netjets Europe), suddenly a LOT of spare time, and i go for electronic Logbook.. I dug from the basement my previous records and insert everything...Surprise , surprise, a discrepancy of 1400 hours between the "official" records and my paper thing, i just forgot during my FAA time to add one whole logbook...
So i added a line with the appropriate breakdown of hours and "voila!" went through refreshers and initials, licence renewal with not a question asked.

One thing though; at 10k hours 1000 more or less does not make a difference, but 40 hours on 250 total does; i am not so sure with 1000 TT. What matters is how you behave behind the wheel ( or the stick).. electrons are flying planes nowadays..

Basically yse, but no "buddy" was ever required for that: During training, it is the FTO which adds up your hours in your student records and when flying (and instructing) commercially, there is always a company that tracks your flying time. Which means no need for the authorized person to look at logbooks. This may be different for someone who flies privately a lot, but I never could afford private flying.

Or flying corporate for a company without an AOC. Thatīs another 'privat' option without having to pay for the fun. Thought you are playing mainly in that field.

Presently, "my" corporate aircraft is placed under an AOC so there is someone who adds up my flight time for me. Before that, it was always the examiners doing my yearly LPCs who blindly trusted my claims regarding minimum hours since last checkride
