Now if you're into statistics, re-calculate it to retire and know your exact hours and minutes flown...
If not, I would just leave out the 40 and take the lower of the two values and continue from there. Nobody really cares whether you have 1500, 1540 or 5000 when sending in your ATPL application. You have to pass all the requirements, and usually send in copies of the last 2-3 pages of your logbook to proof the hours, not dozens. Plus eventually relevant other pages such as the ones with simulator checks signed off.
Still, I'm sure you'll be fine. Not like every other pilot never got it wrong out there.
