Hiding in plain sight

TCU 3rd Dec 2021 04:06

Well done ea200. The lovely White Waltham as seen from the approach to runway 11

Back to you Sir

ea200 4th Dec 2021 09:19

Thanks TCU. Just about the first I thought of, but discounted it without checking!

He we go then:

Kemble? Heading for the scrapper?

Hope not.

chevvron 5th Dec 2021 01:13

Nah Kemble doesn't have HAS's; more likely a UK military base somewhere, possibly (being a civil aircraft) visiting Leuchars or Lossiemouth judging by the hills in the background?

G-ARZG 5th Dec 2021 08:42

Leeming? There is a Qatari link there, after all

ea200 5th Dec 2021 13:54

All of those guesses make sense, but it is not in the UK.

Pretty sure it's Europe? The bumpy but not mountainous background makes me think it might be Memmingen...

ea200 5th Dec 2021 20:02

Well that narrows things down a bit. It's not Europe. You are right about the bumpy but not mountainous though.

Ah OK. The HAS's look NATO-ish, so now I'm thinking Turkey. I'll have a punt at Kayseri and then retire from the field for the evening!

ea200 6th Dec 2021 08:21

Not an unreasonable punt but unfortunately incorrect.

OUAQUKGF Ops 6th Dec 2021 09:00

Izmir - Turkey ?

ea200 6th Dec 2021 10:11

There you go. It is indeed Izmir Adnan Menderes airport. The Qatar flight was the first of a new route in 2019.
Military and the coastguard base are on the East side opposite the main terminals. Coastguard is mostly helicopters. Never seen any military activity there so maybe all at Cigli these days.

OUAQUKGF has the con.

OUAQUKGF Ops 6th Dec 2021 10:44

Thanks ea200. I have nothing to offer so it is OPEN HOUSE.

Not an international airport

chevvron 6th Dec 2021 13:01

Bit blurred but it looks like Filfli Rock, the bombing range on Malta.

Asturias56 6th Dec 2021 16:48

Sorry about the image - - it's not Malta.......................... a few more hills

this is on the approach

If it's not an international airport, is it a domestic heliport? :)

India Four Two 7th Dec 2021 01:23

Knowing something of your history Asturias, is this perhaps in the Malvinas? ;)

Asturias56 7th Dec 2021 07:43

Possible, possible

and it's used by fix wing aircraft - tho I don't remember so many edge markers when I was last there
