Freiburg ?

err...no.

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 12:55

Is that US bombing?

asw22 6th Jul 2019 12:56

Ah, I would have believed it was easier the that...You may not like the next one...

Meanwhile, a last clue: "Wilde Sau"

Most probably...airdrome targets had to be bombed by day hence USAAF whereas the RAF was more in night city bombing at the time....

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 13:05

But unlikely to be Russian?

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 13:10

Bonn Hangelar?

asw22 6th Jul 2019 13:28

Congrats Asturias! Bonn-Hangelar it is...

This has been quite an important airfield (and it was Bonn city's airfield before the war) during the last months of the war and was home to the infamous "Wilde Sau" system JG300 and JG301 squadrons...Those were daylight single engine fighters sent to down the bombers at night under ground control...Loss rate was impressive, the pilots of these aircraft being not at ease with instrument/night flying, and the weather at night end of 44 was...not good for aircraft without any icing protection...

Asturias you have the helm!

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 13:37

Yes - a bit like trying to fly Spitfire at night- not a great idea

Lets go somewhere else although this too had more than its fair share of bombing

Good shooting Asturias.

Are we now back in the Pacific area ?

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 13:54

If we mean the East yes as opposed to the Pacific Ocean sensu stricto - WW2 yes, but it has seen action at other times as well

I'm off out for a while

dook 6th Jul 2019 14:38

I assume the airfield is at the bottom and the aeroplane is bombing shipping, or he's not a very good shot !

Anywhere near New Britain or the Solomans ?

asw22 6th Jul 2019 14:41

Could it be somewhere in PNG?

Hello minuteman and welcome.

It is indeed Domodedovo, photographed in 1979.

I assume you are calling OH.

In fact, I have posted a challenge previously but thanks! (was OH indeed but not being presumptious in being correct..)

dook 6th Jul 2019 16:23

Not convinced, but Gizo ?

Self loading bear 6th Jul 2019 17:04

I think Vietnam or Cambodja

Asturias56 6th Jul 2019 17:57

Ahh let's see

Yes they were probably attacking ships - as well as the airfield - there is a port close by and more or less off the end of the runway centre-line

I couldn't say it is in PNG - but close (-ish)

Not Vietnam or Cambodia

I don't think it ever had international flights but it was a busy enough spot some days

I suggested before New Britain or the Solomons.
