It was built for the British by ?

In desperation ...

Can we get Africa out of the way please ? ie - is it in Africa ?

Is that a shoreline or an escarpment at the end of the road ? Or just the mists of photographic antiquity ?

That should narrow it down. LFH

It is not Africa

It is a shoreline - but not the sea

I'll upload another photo this evening

Here is the clue relating to 1473.

If you know which country and what sort of picture this is, the name of the aerodrome should be easy to come by.

I guess this aerodrome is too unknown as there is virtually nothing on the web about it.

The aerodrome in question was Tsuchiura Naval Airbase in Japan, which was located at 36 05' 01"N 140 15' 32"E.

The airbase was built for the British Air Mission to Japan in 1922, and I'm guessing that the straight "road" towards the lake is some sort of transportation for float planes. The information about this (and a previous aerodrome at Kasumigaura) have come from a book called "Brackles - Memoirs or a Pioneer of Civil Aviation" compiled by Frida H, Brackley.

In the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey (Pacific): Japanese Air Target ... it was target no 1473

Noyade 3rd Feb 2012 21:27

That's the one Brian. :ok:

Your control.

nvubu 4th Feb 2012 09:43

Is it in Canada?

Lordflasheart 4th Feb 2012 14:18

If not Canada, then Scandinavia ? LFH

evansb 4th Feb 2012 15:25

Sorry, not Scandinavia.

evansb 5th Feb 2012 08:04

Clue: One-third of the population speaks French.

nvubu 5th Feb 2012 10:02

Saint John (CYSJ)

evansb 5th Feb 2012 14:30

nvubu is correct.:ok: Saint John, New Brunswick. New Brunswick is a bi-lingual province...and no, Celtic is not the other language. Your turn.

nvubu 5th Feb 2012 14:55

Thanks evansb. I didn't realise quite how many bodies of water there are in Canada until I started looking for your mystery aerodrome. Your clue certainly narrowed it down a lot :ok:.

I hope that this overhead shot is a bit easier than my last offering:

I don't know where it is, but I'm glad I wasn't there...

nvubu 5th Feb 2012 15:41

Here's one taken a bit earlier - although it shows signs of being previously visited.
