JENKINS 24th Dec 2019 12:01

There seems to be a space left by my old chum, so how seasonal is this? Never been even close to this one, albeit in a neighbouring country in my travails.

Asturias56 24th Dec 2019 15:00

Bravo, sycamore has it Biggin Hill it is. This is a post Air Fair shot taken in 1972 when Sportair flying club were about to depart for the annual trip to the Sportavia Fournier factory in Germany. Aircraft are lined up along the edge of runway 29/11 looking West towards the then still active (OASC) RAF side, not too far from where the below image was taken.

You have the Christmas control.

No they're not on 29/11, that was always in good nick; I would say they're on the disused runway which is now taxiway C roughly the old 04/22.

JENKINS 24th Dec 2019 15:24

Yes Easter Island, I became confused with the seasons! Asturias 56 has correct ident. OH declared.

Well that the country correct.

Self loading bear 24th Dec 2019 20:17

Then I will give others a try first.

Seasons Greetings

Mulga Dalaman LTBS. DLM I think.

if correct Open House

Flap40 24th Dec 2019 22:42

Sorry, it’s not Dalaman.

mustbeaboeing 24th Dec 2019 22:59

Ok I’ll try round the corner ........

Milas Bodrum LTFE BJV

Hopefully my counting the light towers was correct this time.

Open House if correct

Flap40 25th Dec 2019 07:57

Yes, a rather quiet Bodrum at the end of the season. We were the only aircraft on the international terminal.

OH has been declared.

A festive farewell on departure

Jn14:6 25th Dec 2019 16:56

Kansai?
OH, if, by some miracle correct!

Haven't a clue 25th Dec 2019 18:26

Right country, but the island to the north

Haven't a clue 25th Dec 2019 19:19

Does this help?

Jn14:6 26th Dec 2019 08:19

Sapporo/New Chitose?
Still OH if right!

Haven't a clue 26th Dec 2019 08:46

Getting warmer, But still further north.....

Haven't a clue 26th Dec 2019 15:41

This is close to the home of Japan's beautiful Red-Crowned Cranes. Zooming out both my image and the Google Earth shot will reveal the name of this aerodrome. I can put up the former, but perhaps best to wait a bit to see if anyone can find the latter.

Rather than hog the thread I will put up one or the other if nothing has appeared by tomorrow morning, say 10.00z.

SMOKEON 26th Dec 2019 16:17

Kushiro Airport, Hokkaido?

Haven't a clue 26th Dec 2019 17:18

Not Kushiro although I see that is also very close to one of the Red-Crowned Cranes reserves. This aerodrome is due north from there.

SMOKEON 26th Dec 2019 18:33

In that case it must be;
Memanbetsu Airport.
O.H., if correct.

Haven't a clue 26th Dec 2019 20:03

Memembetsu it is. Lovely send off from the JAL ground crew. Take a bow! SMOKON has declared OH.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....121e77be84.jpg

India Four Two 26th Dec 2019 21:10

That is interesting - I checked the Kanji script for all the airports in Hokkaido and couldn't find a match.

All is clear now. The characters for Memanbetsu Kūkō are 女満別空港. The sign on the terminal building is facing away from the airside and so is reversed!

Normal:

Reversed:

女満別空港

I always love the formality of the ground crews in Japan, when departing.

Yes. It is an old tradition
W2 documentaries show that they did a similar thing for departing Kamikaze, but without the snowman :E

Can you just show a photograph of an aerodrome? You know, runways, taxiways and buildings? From above? Apparently not. A hedgerow on a Yorkshire farm is hardly a clue to an Argentinian aerophile, is it? If similar standards were to be applied to "What Cockpit?", I would imaging close-ups of an ash tray. This 'What Aerodrome?' thread seems to have descended to an absolute #@$%^&! show. Just my opinion.

The rest of your post indicates a surfeit of Christmas spirit, but there is no mandate requiring you to visit this forum or this thread. Others are currently participating and contributing quite happily :ok:

Normal Service will be resumed, folks ;)

Fair call; it may have been less confrontational to refer members to the Wiki for this thread and the T&Cs there?

Maybe I’ll do it for you ;) :ok:

Asturias56 27th Dec 2019 18:06

Now we've got over Christmas and it's OH here is one for the weekend...

I thought I'd post a waste paper bin but evans might have had a melt-down....... :E

So, as requested, an overhead

I would expect some attention to the Wiki post at the head of this thread, particularly:
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted. Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
and
  • Try to use elderly photos and not Google Earth pics
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are.

Asturias56 28th Dec 2019 07:34

Ok - here is an old picture of the same airfield...................

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....e70f4708ce.jpg

PS I run ALL the pictures I post through Google Image first to make sure it's not an easy shot for those who might fall into temptation..................

Doesn't say you can't use ZoomEarth.https://www.pprune.org/images/icons/46.gif
The overhead image appears to be a Warsaw Pact type airfield; haven't a clue where though.

It does now :p

Asturias56 28th Dec 2019 08:06

"The overhead image appears to be a Warsaw Pact type airfield; haven't a clue where though"

Now you point it out it does rather look like something from the Pact - it definitely isn't tho'................ Go West Young Man!

chevvron 28th Dec 2019 10:15

Former East Germany then?

Asturias56 28th Dec 2019 17:39

Keep going west ...................................... It's NOT a Warsaw pact airfield - in fact I'm not sure it ever was a military field at all

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....c2f3ef3497.jpg

Self loading bear 28th Dec 2019 18:08

America’s?
I see a lot of the same aircraft on the grass?
So a factory airfield?

Asturias56 29th Dec 2019 09:09

Yes it's in the America's

It was a major factory airfield and still has a lot of facilities there tho' I don't think they build any airframes these days - but it was always a civilian airfield throughout

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....ee30edcd23.jpg

Asturias56 29th Dec 2019 17:11

The area has been known as a point to measure distance/time from for over 50 years...............
