Couple of clues in the picture.
MJG Sand sand everywhere... but the light pits had water in each of them. |
Don't know about the location, but the runway-end survey point is in the wrong place and the collocation of RHAG & barrier is a novel idea.
|
N Africa???????
|
Might it be Muharraq, Bahrain?

A Flying Squirrel? A Bat???
|
Trying desperately to think of an airfield name related to a small mammal and a lack of sense of gravity. Rabat? ('Rat' with 'Ba' (bars) plonked in the middle?) :hmm:
|
Not North Africa,
The inspection team was certainly civilian... Near an easy place for a quality date, if you are into that type of activity. Pursuing the small mammal might be a mistake. MJG Sorry for the delayed response - I'm in a very different time zone and needed to sleep. |
Ahha, good stuff! In my cogitations on small mammals I forgot about the gerbil. A mention of dates (as in the palm fruit) has me thinking...
|
Yes, I've done an inspection at Erbil (back in 2006) but that is not where I took the pic.
The picture was taken in November 2011. Does that help with the date(s)? I'll be off air most of tomorrow with an inspection at Funafuti but I'll check about this time when I get back. MJG |
"I'll be off air most of tomorrow with an inspection at Funafuti"
Did they ever finish the hotel ? We were there in the early 80's when it had just opened - no beds (but mattresses on the floor) and no curtains (use sheets) but a plentiful supply of VB thank god Once a week flight to Suva and once every two weeks to Kiribati...... Experience of a lifetime |

And now once a week TRW/FUN/TRW in the Dash 8. Gives you a little under three hours after customs etc and before check in to walk the runway and discover those folk delivering "aid in the Pacific" have little or no understanding of the aviation system. But that is another story.
Back to the sandpit... Here's another view. First time in 45 years I'd seem a camouflaged apron. |
Jordan? looks neat & tidy enough
King Hussein Al Mafraq |
Not Jordan. Correct region.
MJG Did I tell you about the time we inspected some military airfields which were "managed" by a civilian organisation? |

Do any of these help with the clues?
Not sure too many will have seen the view from the hotel room but it tells you something about the environment around the airport. Somewhat different to the namesake in Poland. MJG Because of my sometimes opposed views I understand it is often about waiting in line. |
Al Ain? One of the worlds most ridiculous vanity projects???
|
Harry,
Not sure I agree with you there - Don't Waste Concrete must surely better fit that bill , though you could be on the right angle. Not Al Ain. MJG Often reversing trends but always with intended legacies. |
UAE? Or Saudi??
|
Given the activities there, certainly not the latter.
MJG Sometimes looking backwards makes us aware we induce learning. |
Hmmm, most would know the airfield as Liwa (OMLW).
|
Liwa it is - or was a few years ago when we did the inspection.
Thanks Cows - it was getting difficult to fine phrases starting with a, w, i, and l in order!. MJG Looking intently with anticipation to see what the next one is. |
