Jenkins strikes again, Maison Blanche in Algeria it is.

Well done. Over to you.

nvubu 1st Mar 2017 16:34

Here's one to keep us going until Jenkins gets his technology together.

Is that an airship mooring mast centre left ?

nvubu 1st Mar 2017 19:34

Good spot - I don't know, but it looks like it could be.

India Four Two 2nd Mar 2017 06:15

Very interesting unequal-span biplanes but I can't ID them.

Terrain looks like France.

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 06:40

France it is

DaveReidUK 2nd Mar 2017 06:44

I like a challenge, but those sesquiplanes have me beat. I'd have said Nieuports, but they don't appear to have any wing rake at all.

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 07:06

There is still an airfield at this location, but not quite in the same position. The odd shaped wood in the photo matches what is there currently.

India Four Two 2nd Mar 2017 12:36

Dave, I think they are the Caudron G.3, so presumably an Allied aerodrome.

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 12:40

Yes to Allied and Caudron G.3 were used here.

Chardon Lorrain?
(Now Aérodrome de Chambley)

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 15:14

It's not Chardon Lorrain / Chambley-Bussières

According to Bing Maps it's about a 5 hour drive from there.

Oh dear, I was looking at one of those only a few weeks ago (at Hendon). :\

India Four Two 2nd Mar 2017 16:11

Dave,
If it's any consolation, I was thinking "I know that biplane", but I couldn't place it. I also now know the difference between a "sesquiplane" and an "unequal span biplane" ;)

I'll post an interesting link when I find it again!

Approximately 5 hours by road from Chardon Lorrain; apparently flat countryside with fields; potentially an airship mast.

Are we coastal in an arc from Le Havre, northwards?

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 18:24

South of Le Havre

sidtheesexist 2nd Mar 2017 19:42

Very lonnngggg shot......Poitiers-Biard?:p

Kewbick 2nd Mar 2017 19:46

Dijon, France ?

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 19:47

It's north of Poitiers-Biard and not too far east (within 50 miles) of a line drawn between Poitiers-Biard and Le Havre.

edit to add: And Dijon is way too far east.

sidtheesexist 2nd Mar 2017 19:59

I've already inspected the woods near Tours and didn't think I could see the funny shaped one....I've looked again and think there's a match(ish), so Tours?

India Four Two 2nd Mar 2017 20:24

Sesquiplane link

I've just got home and found the link:

http://www.ww1aero.org.au/pdfs/Sample%20Journal%20Articles/Sesquiplanes[1]1972-73.pdf

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 20:27

Not Tours, but getting closer. The wood isn't an exact match as some of it has gone, but the remnant is there. The image is looking almost due west.

RAF Camp de Poulines
(OH if correct)

nvubu 2nd Mar 2017 22:06

Well done DIBO!

The image is labelled "Vendome 1"

I had located Camp des Poulines in a more northern location from the one you have pointed out - and it didn't match the image at all, so had discounted this aerodrome as Vendome 1. However the road layout and field boundaries above map onto todays image, so I reckon you have it spot on.

Bloody good detective work from my crappy misleading directions with the wood still existing :ok::ok::ok::ok:

I had located the "wood" at the Aerodrome de Blois Breuil, and had jumped to the conclusion that this was Vendome 1.

OPEN HOUSE

Great challenge, Mr. Hippo ;)

RAF Shawbury circa 1945

India Four Two 3rd Mar 2017 09:11

I knew it would be easy. A lot more buildings than when I knew it in the 60s, back in the days when it was relatively quiet, before it was infested with helicopters. ;)

Shackman has control.

Shackman 3rd Mar 2017 09:21

Unfortunately not close to stock of pictures/photos, so have to declare Open House.

nvubu 4th Mar 2017 07:53

Something for the weekend - all images are clickable.

For this aerodrome I know exactly where this one is as the road layout is the same now as it was 100 years ago. :ok:

North is in the direction of the white lines at the top of the image.

These were here - nothing remains though. I'm not sure how much help, if any, they are with the search, but I thought you may be interested to see them as they are all taken at this aerodrome.

nvubu 4th Mar 2017 09:38

Heathrow Harry 4th Mar 2017 11:16

Alsace - Lorraine?

nvubu 4th Mar 2017 11:20

That's the right region

Heathrow Harry 4th Mar 2017 12:11

the railway bends to the NE coming from the south - almost all local railways seem to bend the other wayto the NW on modern maps

nvubu 4th Mar 2017 13:01

The railways is still there.

Am just off to Lincoln - 3 hours away, so will be off-line for a while.

Flap40 4th Mar 2017 16:26

I think the village is Puxieux, a few km's west of Metz but i've no idea if the airfield took the same name.

OH if correct.

nvubu 4th Mar 2017 17:12

Well done Flap40, and yes it took the name of the village according to the documents I have.

Open House.

Heathrow Harry 5th Mar 2017 14:13

If you're lucky you'll never go here
