I found the patch of bare earth on googleearth an hour or two ago. The hard bit was finding what it was called!
Here's an easy one.

Duckbutt 30th Nov 2007 19:42

Lakehurst NJ I think.

Flap40 30th Nov 2007 19:49

Correct! Over to you.

Duckbutt 30th Nov 2007 19:53

I don't think this is a duplicate......:O

English Midlands?

I thought perhaps Hucknall, but I see from Google Earth it isn't. However, can anyone tell me what the structure is in the middle of the runway at Hucknall?

KMG 365 1st Dec 2007 02:51

IFT, that's an engine test bed for Rolls Royce. It can simulate rain, birdstrikes, cold, etc. Click link to see picture and read more.

Geeze.. and here I thought it was a Q-hut for drying spuds.

India Four Two 1st Dec 2007 06:28

KMG 635

Thanks. I could see it was some kind of pole, but I was mystified by the large embankment around it. It all makes sense now, but why did they have to put it in the middle of a perfectly good runway!!

evansb,

The spud drying machine would make more sense if it was at CFB Summerside ;)

Duckbutt 1st Dec 2007 09:36

It is in the UK but not in the Midlands.

Spot 4 1st Dec 2007 09:40

Just how do I attach a picture file in here?

I hope you'll stick around instead of just passing through.

Don't worry about not having a picture, because it gives me an opportunity to step in with pictures of an airfield I have been trying to find for a long time.

I just found them yesterday and they are better than I expected. I can just see Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings walking into this terminal:

Notice the Spartan Cruiser in the first picture. It looks like they are becoming mandatory in What Aerodrome pictures!

Chitterne, sorry to jump in ahead of you. Have a look at the Sticky at the top of this forum http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=203154

Hmm, I've seen those piccies before, presumably on a search related to this thread. All I need now is to remember where. Wouldn't be Le Touquet again, would it?

The SSK 1st Dec 2007 12:46

Or this one?

In which case it's Ramsgate

India Four Two 1st Dec 2007 14:19

SSK has it.

Ramsgate it is.

My first flight was there in about 1958 in a Rapide (7/6d or 37.5p). Perhaps it is the one in SSK's photo (although looking closely, it might be a Dragon).

The rows of tents are from an Airport Camping Weekend.

And sadly, the whole airport and that wonderful terminal are buried under an industrial development.

Over to you SSK.

The SSK 1st Dec 2007 15:45

Agree about the terminal. Here's the next challenge:

Sisteron, France Perhaps?

The SSK 1st Dec 2007 19:40

No, further east than that.
