Mel's challenge
Portsmouth airfield, home of Airspeed, and others. Here is a photograph taken in 1933 during an air display.

Thanks Mel. Here is the next mystery airfield:

Pure guess as unable to investigate full y while at work..... RAF Valley?
|
Not an ex-RAF airfield, to my knowledge. Presently overgrown, and vacation houses are encroaching on the perimeter.
|
Is it Caribbean, say Antigua?
|
Not in the Caribbean. Try the other side of the Atlantic.

I saw that picture a couple of days ago when I got Brittas Bay mixed up with Bantry Bay.

evansb's challenge
Flap40 is correct:ok: Brittas Bay, Ireland. It was a lovely airfield, 35 miles SSE of Dublin. With a beach and a golf course nearby, it is appealing to vacation estate developers. You have control.

With a runway that wide, with a HAS site, must be Woodbridge.
|
Too easy wasn't it!

I am trying to locate my box of pictures (Loft), so if nothing is posted by 1300, Open house can be assumed.

Damn the only one I knew so far and someone beat me! Actually the UFO landing spot bottom right gave it away.

Alfriston - Eastbourne Flying Club
|
Mel's Challenge
India Four Two. THe Eastbourne Flying Club is the correct answer:D:ok: I think the EFC on the hangar may have given it away. The airfield was known as Wilmington Aerodrome and was located on the A27 near Alfriston. Apparently between the wars, this was the home of Eastbourne Flying Club. At the top end of the field there was a brick built, white painted Control Tower and one, or possibly two wooden hangers. During the summer months in the thirties an air display was held. This photograph was taken at such a function in 1935.

Mel,
Thanks. Yes, it was obviously Britain and how many EFCs could there be? I stumbled on the location at this very interesting page of reminiscences (including a reference to the Cierva): http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/s...a1097813.shtml Now here's my contribution and it's not in Sussex: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3.../waf_1_i42.jpg |
