KMG 365 I reckon you are correct.
|
Bingo KMG 365! Specifically, Tern Island in the French Frigate Shoals atoll.
It has an interesting history in that the Japanese used the lagoon there as a flying boat staging point with refueling via submarine. They conducted reconnaissance of Hawaii prior to the 7 Dec 1941 Pearl Harbor attack and carried out bombing raids in Hawaii during early 1942. The US built the strip in 1942 and it served as an enroute stop for aircraft moving between Hawaii and Midway as well as a base for patrol aircraft. Later served as a Coast Guard base and is now used by the US Wildlife Service. KMG 365 you have control! |
Many thanks, StbdD. Very interesting about French Frigate Schoals.

Little Rissington, UK?
|
|
Yes, Little Rissington it is. Well done, Wycombe!
The floor is yours. |
Floor is open, can't find anything that's really not too easy....
|
I have no problem with easy...
I don't recall this country featuring before. But I might be wrong. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d4...rportquiz4.jpg |
Oh dear, seven hours and no takers.
There was a WW1 US Naval Air Station nearby. Apart from that, I am clueless. |
Is it in Eire?
|
Yes it is.
|
Possibly Bantry Bay. The NAS was Whiddy Island?
|
|
Thank you. (and googoo!)
Let's try something a bit different. Before: http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...tairfield2.jpg Photo taken early 40s. After: external view: http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...irfield1-1.jpg Internal view: http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t...tairfield3.gif |
Very wild guess before doing some work.....
Changi? |
You are in the right general part of the World but, no, not Changi.
|
Jakarta Soekarno - Hatta per chance....?
|
Sorry not Jakarta.
Clue: This airfield is no longer in use but the tower is still there. It houses a library. |
lars' challenge
The historic Nielson Airport, in Manila. Developed by Laurie Reuben Nielson from Britain, and designed by renowned American art deco architect Daniel Burnham. Open in 1937, attacked by the Japanese in 1941 (b&w photo), closed in 1948.

Bri,
You have just cornered the 'What Airfield' and 'What Cockpit' threads! :D:D:D You are indeed correct. It is Nielsen Field which was the HQ for the US Far East Air Force at the start of WW2. Sadly, Nielsen was taken by the Japanese to Japan and was never heard of again. The tower/terminal now houses the Philippinas Hertigage Library. The airfield was returned to the Ayala family after WW2 and was developed to become the area of Makati, the major business district in Manila. The runway became one of the roads running through the area but, thankfully, the tower still remains albeit dwarfed by some of the building surrounding it. |
