Maybe all airfields look the same in China, it reminds me strongly of the Heliport that is the Base for CITIC offshore helicopters in Shekou near Shenzhen in southern China , only rotary wing activity when I was there about 4 yrs ago. Super Puma city but with a small GA runway

Not Shekou ,Wunper. The industrial scenery in the photograph belies the architectural beauty of the city it once served.

Flap40 20th Mar 2008 19:41

Shanghai, Longhua.

sabredog 20th Mar 2008 19:59

Correct. I made it a little obvious with my last clue!
YHC.

Thanks!

Sorry for the delay. This server seems to be down more often than up at the moment (unless its just me getting the maintanence page?)

It's not just you, Flap40. I can only get on about one day in three, and that's between 23:00 and 24:00 GMT

As to your latest photo, it could be anywhere, anytime. My guess is Cannes, 1922.

Russ

Flap40 20th Mar 2008 23:30

Not Cannes or 1922 but you are in the right country.

Farman biplane, Troyes aerodrome, France, 1910.

Phileas Fogg 21st Mar 2008 01:33

Le Bourget?

ICT_SLB 21st Mar 2008 04:33

Longchamps? It does look like a Farman Longhorn. Seem to remember that the horse racing & air racing fraternities used to use the same facilities.

In the unlikely event I'm right it's open house as I'll be (a) asleep and (b) back at the north end of the ramp for the next 24 hours (we're a heathen bunch in the Bible Belt - working on Good Friday).

sabredog 21st Mar 2008 09:08

l'aerodrome de Troyes. August 1910?

Flap40 21st Mar 2008 12:25

It is Troyes 1910 and I think evensb was there first.

Over to you.

sabredog 21st Mar 2008 12:38

Apologies to evansb. Did not notice the 0038 post.
sabredog.
Here is a photograph of the winning pilot,Alfred Aubrun.

Thankyou. I see the pilot is wearing a wristwatch, which was tres avant-garde for the time. Pun intended. Here is the next mystery aerodrome:

St Augustine, FL?

evansb 21st Mar 2008 17:09

Sorry, not in Florida.

Clue #1: It was built on a sugar cane field.

Moira 23rd Mar 2008 12:35

Perhaps too obvious, but in view of the clue: Cane Field, Roseau, Dominica?

evansb 23rd Mar 2008 16:42

Sorry, not Dominica. Not in the western hemisphere. Kittyhawks once flew from here. The river has been canaled and the wet-lands drained to make room for the present airport, which serves the adjacent city.

Speedpig 23rd Mar 2008 18:59

I have a hunch... somewhere in India?

evansb 23rd Mar 2008 19:58

Sorry, not India.
