There's an interesting resonance between that guess and the answer, but no, it's not an ST-anything...

To move things along a little, perhaps...

To two of Noyade's questions, I must answer: Yes; to one: No.

I've got an idea.

How about this: British? Yes. Civil? Yes. Turboprop Twin? No. How about a pair of Lycomings?

BN Islander?

Edit to add: There of course could be three Lycomings and therefore a Trislander?

Bravo Nacluv!

Hence why I was less than forthcoming with my original answer; there aren't many British civilian non-turboprop twins... Sorry Noyade, I hope you understand!

My 'baffled' clue may have helped

The Islander was manufactured at Bembridge, Isle of Wight, a stone's throw from the Saunders-Roe factory in Cowes...

This aircraft was on the cover of a British aviation magazine, and that edition was featured on their website for many months as an example back issue.

Nacluv has control.

Blimey - I wasn't 100% convinced myself! The IoW link did help to get me thinking in what turns out to be the right direction. Then I realised the viewpoint in the photo would be about right for someone in the r/h seat. The baffled clue, incidentally went right over my head.

Thanks TheiC for a great challenge - it was fun!

Now please excuse me while I rush off to find another...

Probably rude to jump in so quickly, and almost certainly wrong: C-17?

Ha! Wrong on both counts, I'm afraid.

Not rude to jump in, and not wrong either. I didn't think it would last long!

You're back in control!

Well, a crop of it... Obviously not a very clever one, perhaps!

I spent twenty minutes this morning working on a Tamworth clue for you but didn't get round to using it, I'm afraid.

Your control!

Thanks mate. Tamworth and the Islander? That would have made for an interesting clue!

Heading to work shortly, so - open house.

Cheers.

Alright, not strictly an aeroplane "hole", but I'm sure there are some engine buffs here somewhere...
