Which Aerodrome Mk III
Mary,Princess Royal was Air Chief Commandant of PMRAFNS,so it could be her,and using a Heron would suggest only a UK/Europe visit to a `new` hospital possibly....
She was also an Honorary Colonel in Chief of several Army units.

So she's on Army business but flying in/out of an RAF base, well one of the former West Germany RAF bases would be favorite followed by somewhere like RAF Catterick ... After all it is a short field performance Heron!

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal (Mary), King George VI's sister, visited 21 Signals Regiment as Colonel-in-Chief on RAF Laarbruch on 10 October 1960.
A newspaper article states she arrived from JHQ Rheindahlen accompanied by OC 2TAF Air Marshal Sir Humphrey Edwardes-Jones.
If she actually landed on RAF Laarbruch or arrived by car is not clear.
The Station Commander at that time was Group Captain HNG Wheeler.

The inserted portrait shows Grp Cpt Wheeler. Does he look like one of the group captains in the original photo?
Btw: The photo was found in a photo album of the late William "Bill" Fairgrieve Hall MBE, who was responsible for press relations on RAF Laarbruch.

Taken on my one day as an extra!We were bussed from RAF Oakington.
Privileged to see the whole aerial armada wheeling round over Oakington doing dogfights etc with the camera ship,it stopped all the village traffic and everyone was out craning their necks!!

With the pristine hangar I would like to say Bovingdon but it was closed by 1970, having had the 4 hangars re-clad in fresh corrugated iron a couple of years previously. This cost so much that some accountant at MOD decided the airfield was too expensive to operate so close it.
Well that's what I was told by someone who worked for Shorts (who provided groundcrew there).

Just as an aside the airfield was still open in 1970. My late Father was the Adjutant on 617 Gliding School until end Oct 70 (when it moved to Manston).

Prior to 617 being transferred in from Hendon, 613 VGS from Halton operated periodic detachments there and on one of these, I got my Air Cadet Soaring Certificate which gave me a BGA 'C' Certificate in Sedburgh VX275.
Those trees in the left background of your photo align the edge of a taxiway which is the bit of tarmac we were allocated to use on our first detachment, with myself (front seat) and Robin Miller (back seat) doing first launch in a Mk3.
