Sounds like you need a newer book!
As you are just about there, it's the New Standard D-33 (incorrectly listed as the D-32 in Aerofiles)

Well, I then went to Aerofiles and saw "31" and "32", so went with the first. Process of elimination.

Looking closer at the photo I can see American Airways on the fuselage.

Also used by the USAAF.
