They are to assist in visually judging the vertical or 45 degree angle during aerobatic manoevres such as stall turns or any othe manoevre which requires precise vertical alignment in competition work.

When I won a world international I had to use the tip tanks, which were just as good.

I think they use to know at which absurde angle they are with respect to the horizon...

(of course refer to Mate's explanation, not mine!)

Vertical is not an absurd angle, it is merely one choice of 360 degrees....



...or rather, two, depending upon whether you are going up or down.
