chevvron.

Yes !! IWO JIMA.

I was thinking more along the lines of John Wayne in, The Sands of Iwo Jima.

Next clue would have been Clint Eastwood in, Letters from Iwo Jima.

You have control.

Clint.

Would you believe that, when I got up this morning, the name 'Pima Uncle' kept running through my mind - I must be psychadelic!!

Interesting reply.

The Flying Leathernecks was about the Marine squadrons on Guadalcanal not Iwo Jima.

Who or what is Pima Uncle ? Do tell.

And as for being psychadelic, mmmm.... from my memory of working with you in 1971.....

As God said to Moses, Keep taking the Tablets.

I think it's a helicopter training area. The one I saw was in Alabama but I suppose there are many more.

Not intended for Airships or helicopters and not in the USA. The picture is from around 1938

I cannot help with the location, but is it based on the idea that only the initial part of the runway requires to me a concrete hardstanding for touchdown and /or the take off.
The theory being that once on the ground stopping on a soft surface was easy, and whilst taking off, by the time you were onto the grass bit, the wings were developing some lift to lighten the load on the wheels.

I can speculate that this was the case but have not found confirmation. Local conditions meant that prior to this construction most air traffic in this country used some form of water.

I suddenly realised last night that Flying Leathernecks was Guadalcanal not Iwo Jima; intended to admit my mistake this a.m. but I see I was beaten to it!!
There was an excellent issue of 'After the Battle' magazine (sorry if I've advertised)dedicated to the assault on Iwo Jima; this included details of all the airfields both American and Japanese; Pima Uncle was the name of one (I think there were about 6 in total- probably most re-claimed by jungle nowadays).
I seem to recall another 'Iwo Jima' film starring Tony Curtis; he played the part of a 'native American' who was one of the group who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi.

Oh his tribe by the way was the Pima!!

Helsinki - Malmi ??
Closer and closer. This other Finnish field preceeded Malmi with the "all-weather" surface. Malmi used asphalt for the runways and gravel instead of the central grassed area, while this one used gravel for the stub runways and left the centre grassed.
