Mmm, interesting one. I presume we are looking at a mid/late 1920's era design?
So it is not NAF XN3N-1 either, because you had not found a picture of the canopied version…..
Edit: corrected my mistake!

Are you struggling? A clue?
The original type started by one company and by 1940 the rights to the machine had been acquired by another company, which built a couple of variants. I don't actually know which this is! The later version had a D-333 engine. That'll do it!!!!

Well I had originally looked long and hard at the Driggs Skylark, but decided it didn't look quite right. Taking the link from 1930 to 1940/41, would this be the Phillips CT-2 Skylark?

Well done, boys!!! It is the Driggs Skylark/Phillips CT-3 Skylark. I haven't found any images of it with a canopy, only in Air Pictorial. I reckon you pipped Reg to the post, Ken. CONTROL is yours!!!

Thanks Martin. Definitely one for more research. The photo looks more lile the CT-1 Skylark - see Aerofiles for a photo of one: http://www.aerofiles.com/philips-ct1peru.jpg. Does Air Pic quote the registration no?
Here's a simple one for you all:

Afternoon, just back online.
Unmistakable tail fin style and engine cowling,
De Havilland D.H.65 Hound
(and for me to recognize a bipe at first glance it must have really been easy as you say...)
