Well done Tiger mate, spotting the Canberra connection. It is indeed Warton, at that time Base Air Depot 2, now BAE Systems, the last bastion of our military aircraft industry. Over to you.

Wow - have read much about the place - real history.............Great to see modern, colour pickies of the place - thanks. Out of interest, is it now pretty much as it was in '42? Sorry for thread creep........

Not that I was there in '42, but nobody is sniping at you or lobbing artillery shells anymore, and the Tokyo Express coming down the slot at night is looking for tuna, not landing fresh replacements at Pt. Esperance.
But stick a shovel in the ground just about anywhere, and you will find remnants of the fighting.
The cowpasture, aka Fighter 1 is now a (little used) golf course. The old control tower still stands. One of the photos is taken from it.
And there are wrecks of aircraft, ships and tanks all over the jungle and they keep finding more. That goes for the rest of the Solomons, too.

Aspern disused airfield, just East of Vienna. The factory buildings just to the left are GM Motors engine plant.

Yes, Vienna Aspern Airport. Opened 1912 closed 1977.
