Have to agree with Tim on this. The pilot was terrible on the 0720 version but better at 0820, and the doctor was just OK on both. But with the limited media opportunities available the whole outfit should have made much more of this one. Properly rehearsed scripts, higher info data rate, more contact details visible and some decent film of the actual aircraft rather than just the one shot of the top of the wing with bits missing - it all helps to get the message across that this is a slick operation (whether it is or is not) involving an impressive bit of British machinery that just needs a little extra financial push to get it really going. I hope that this has not been a missed opportunity.

Tim - give 'em a break! The clip that you saw (I guess) was the 0624 one. Those two people are not 'spokesmen' - they are the pilot, Dave Thomas and the Engineering Manager Andrew Edmondson. They're people who do the biz, not media professionals.

One hell of a lot of work went into getting the Beeb to cover the project, and I, for one , am very grateful they did. You couldn't pay for that kind of coverage.

All of that said, I do believe the later pieces (0720 and 0820) were actually more dynamic. Accordingly, I have asked Breakfast to see if they can't get one of those online rather than the present clip. We'll see.

Also, I've just heard that the story has been reappearing regularly on News 24, though I haven't had a chance to see that.

Another piece of good news at

This is the top item (as I write) in the UKsponsorship website rolling news.
It's happening, folks! Let's not sink back into negativity.....

Exactly zoom - it's rather frustrating when a rare national TV slot becomes available and it isn't used to advantage.

Patently, a bunch of engineers (and a pilot) are obviously not media-savvy performers, but you have to marvel at the way in which Felicity (who surely should have orchestrated this event or appeared in it) was nowhere to be seen. One assumes she's still on holiday which rather begs the question (yet again) as to why she's still supposedly heading the PR effort.

They don't have to be professionals, they just have to be prepared. Fundraisng isn't about hoping that people will be generous, it's about persuading them to be generous.

From that last link,

"Anyone who witnessed the Vulcan in real life (such as the writer) will have appreciated the aircraft's enormous aerial presence - in particular its highly distinctive shape, massive size and the awesome vibrations created by its powerful Merlin jet engines."

Bless 'em.

Still, any coverage for the old gal is good coverage!

It seems like the Vulcan has made some friends in the BBC - there's a report coming up on the 1 O'clock news shortly (now 13.18).

Hopefully it'll make the later main bulletins also.

Edit: Just watched it, a much more polished piece than earlier. More cold-war era video and much clearer statement of funds needed before the 31st. Our intrepid reporter conducted the interview with the pilot from atop the roundel on the port wing.

Well done to those responsible for getting the beeb interested!

Tim

Some people are never bloody happy !!

Maybe, with your wealth of media experience, you could go down to Bruntingthorpe and enlighten the 'bunch of engineers' about how to be more ' media -savvy '.

Failing that, keep your negative comments to yourself !

The BBC's North-West Today lunchtime programme also featured the campaign (made in Manchester connection) and even managed to show the VTTS website address and phone number for donations, which none of the nationwide broadcasts seem to have done.

It may get repeated at 6.30.

You're right there will be more on BBC !'s Northwest Tonight this evening. For those elsewhere in the country don't forget if you have digi tv you can watch the programme from whereever you are.

Kate Simms the reporter took with her an engineer who worked on the Vulcans at Woodford.

As someone fairly neutral to this project, I must say I thought today's 1pm national News coverage was quite effective.
I thought Dave Thomas came over with a quiet authority that was just right for the occasion. Using that huge wing as a platform was very effective. The work area looked very professional, as it undoubtedly is. TV is very good at exposing the kind of hype so often encouraged here and that was wisely avoided. The difficult "history" of the project was sensibly passed over, as was reference to personalities. Overall, I thought the scene spoke eloquently for itself.
It persuaded this sceptical onlooker, at least, that there is a good support base for the project - and that it has a life of its own without input from Felicity Irwin and Dr Pleming. The problem seems to be more one of lack of confidence in the project leadership than lack of confidence that the project could be completed technically. Perhaps if the present leaders could be persuaded to resign for the good of the project (after all, things seem to be running much better in their absence) confidence could be regained, which would help the fundraising.
Well done, all those who worked with the "meeja" today.

For those with Sky digital, BBC NorthWest is on Channel 978.

Good news from http://www.vulcan558club.com/ is that the total pledge amount is now a commendable £324539.14 !!

For what it's worth, the Beeb's Look Northwest lunchtime report showed a clip of the prototype's first flight and ----more pertinently---showed contact tel no's and website address for the project. All in all, a good report and piece of PR from the Beeb and the N.West team in particular.

Saw the item about the Vulcan on BBC News 24 today. About two minutes worth. They mentioned the need for money - but they did not give any details on how to donate or support the fund
