The shutdown of the Q group although a tragedy for the staff and their families wouldn't have a significant impact in the long term on the public. In the past, whenever I was asked what I did for a living, people I spoke too were generally full of praise for what I did, and for the brand. These days it's a completely different story. When I tell people what I do for a living the very first thing I hear is "why does your CEO still have his job", without fail. And I am hearing this a lot. I think Aussie's still care enough for our national carrier. Someone better check if anyone at ASIC has Chairman's Lounge privileges |
Exactly. And add CASA, Politicians, Fund Managers, and Media Moguls to your list. But I am beginning to think that attraction might fade... With the decline of QF that Joyce has overseen .. I am wondering if the country's power brokers really want to be associated in any way with the brand.. Even for freebies :confused: |

'Shark Patrol' used to be the Tasman but as Australian Qantas doesn't do this anymore I guess that term has migrated to the Mainland with the aircraft. :ouch:

Qantas versus Piloting excellence-the axe swings again | Plane Talking Qantas group currently has quite a few aircraft sat around completely idle or with only a few hours work per day. It also has a significant number of under-utilised pilots. In an ideal world, you would imagine that QF would have its sales & marketing teams working furiously to identify routes which these assets could be profitably operated. One wonders whether, with a good business plan and a good-looking but realistic spreadsheet, investors might be prepared to back such an audacious plan. Considering expanding your aviation business into new (or possibly old) areas at a time of strong market sector growth in the region is hardly going out on limb, business wise. (about 40 sec into this video Cash Flow Positive? - YouTube for those who missed it) Or instead you can continue to spend $millions to buy & park the unused & unsellable aircraft, not to mention paying out a huge total amount in redundancy payments now, against a long-term reduction in future salaries. Maybe there won’t be a Qantas in three years.? If so, the redundancy savings will have evaporated, AND I don’t expect Qantas group can sell-on its unused A320′s until they’re at least 3 years old. It’s time to get proper people in at the top. With drive, ambition & a genuine Vision of the future for Qantas group, not just a wishy-washy generalisation. (You can’t get what you want, till you know what you want…. AJ doesn’t have (or at least display) any of that vision or drive) Maybe it can’t be saved. With the current CEO & Board, I’d agree. Change those people, define a future & convince investors that it’s a plan that’ll work. Put the finance in place & then convince the staff that its something worth supporting. Then go out & make it work.! Easy……… I am convinced things would change for the better if the management would change tact, take a deep breath and sit down with the staff and nut out some solutions. I'm sure a lot of people would be willing to help out if shown a bit more respect...:ok: |

Unfortunately, those who are presently doing such a hatchet job, will be the chief deciders as to who replaces them. And following the stupid is stupid does theory, we will likely only see more of the same, if not worse management. Time for external intervention by the real owners of Qantas, fund managers. |

We stopped over in Singapore on the way back, and ended up, without realizing when booking, on QF52 (A330) for the last leg. it occurred to me ( only briefly, because I knew the answer) what a bloody good thing it would be if the board and senior management occasionally flew around the world, down the back, incognito, using a few different carriers. No one who did what we did would ever fly Qantas again. Entertainment systems - Emirates screens 3 times the size ( even on their older 777), umpteen times more content. Paper cups for tea/coffee, plastic cutlery, no newspapers (plenty lying around in Business when you get off), water bottles. The whole feeling, coming straight off 3 legs with Emirates ( who, until we got to QF, I wasn't that impressed with - delays/buses to planes/stuff ups etc) was of a LCC. No hope competing with old equipment and a penny pinching culture. |

it occurred to me ( only briefly, because I knew the answer) what a bloody good thing it would be if the board and senior management occasionally flew around the world, down the back, incognito, using a few different carriers. Fact 1. Many years ago I was flying back to SYD in Y and got talking to 2 senior QF people - I an executive (Head of Safety). I asked why they were not up the front and the Head of Safety stated that he wanted to see first hand what it was like to fly surrounded by smokers. This was the time when they were talking about banning smoking on international flights. Head of Safety was old school QF, he wanted to see for himself and that wouldn't happen now. Fact 2. I worked with a guy who's best mate's mum worked at QF (true) apparently her job was to fly international to see how the opposition was going. When I said what a great job, he laughed as he though so as well but his his mate said, yeah but she only flies SQ business class. I wonder if they have such a team still (assume it was a team). I always thought if when booking staff travel, how good it could be if you were randomly selected, received a call and asked if you'd be happy to fly X to your destination? Could have been for a single traveler, a couple or a family. If booking in Y on QF they (staff travel) purchased a Y seat (or more) on airline X etc Could have done this using staff from all levels, maybe not senior management, with the conditions that you completed a survey and return it to staff travel on your return. OK QF may not have liked what they learnt but that would have been the whole idea, honest feedback. It would never happen though. |

I fantastic deal for JQ passengers who have booked on the Brisbane to Perth City pair. They have paid a JQ fare and will travel with QF once JQ are off that route. MC. |
Not sure scoring Qantas on a Jetstar fare would be seen as a great deal. Not really enough between them to really make anyone whoop for joy. Its just sit down, grin and bear it for 4 hours.

Brisbane to Perth has always been a high yield route, people wanting the cheapest are happy to go BNE-SYD-MEL-ADL-PER in a 14 hour marathon and save 5% on their fare...I am quite surprised that the star have pulled completely off the route though...

Come on wazza. Isn't the aim to do the least flying for the most money. Old mates probably the highest paid skipper on a pay vs hours flown in the country.
Plenty of time off with the reduced flying and still gets to go to Bali and Singapore to enjoy Summer. |

This is all part of rapid fire cost cutting initiatives aimed at taking $2 billion in costs out of the airline over the next three years as it seeks to stem the flow of losses from its international division and revive the performance of its domestic operations. In the first six months of the 2014 financial year the airline lost $250 million and there are expectations that the full year loss could hit a mammoth $1 billion. Qantas has undertaken two debt issues over the past month in order to pay down more short term debt and is expected to bolster its cash levels via the partial sell down of its Frequent Flyer loyalty business. Must be a horrible place to work at present... stress city.. so sad, and all so unnecessary..:( Just love the QF pop up ads on the SMH website - Its all about more destinations!!!!!! Oh, thats right there was a message from the Executive Manager People about "begreen" day. But that's about it. Seems to have been incredibly quite from the "Leaders" of the Qantas Group as their pilots are notified of impending demotions. |

I was told the other day that that they are pulling out of NYC and heading back to SFO (Round how many with returning to SF? ). My response was "Doesn't QF make ridiculous amounts of money with freight on the 107/108?", "Yes". Thats why we don't run airlines, our common sense and logic gets in the way. |
