Australia Day Honours 2016: Richard Champion de Crespigny appointed AM

Words fail.... Funny he never mentions the CREW (esp F/O & SCC) who actually got HIM back on the ground safely....

He says he doesn't regard himself as the man who saved QF32 and that it had always been a team effort. What it had achieved he said was to give him a platform from which he could help and give back.
He lost me when allowing himself to be used on the front page of a national newspaper during the previous LH EA PIA.

However, Aussies really love to knock a tall poppy. I remember on Qrewroom when Richard was to receive his Chairmans award for his role as Captain on QF32 all the bleating about how unfair it was on the other crew who received lesser accolades.

He was the Captain. He had the final responsibility. End of story.

The bleating was about how the CSM got higher accolades than the F/O (not the captain). The F/O contributed a lot more to the safe outcome than the CSM but was not publicly recognised for it.

Is this another Abbott Captain's call? Not unlike our illustrious Governor General. Nobody has asked the people that worked with them for their opinion! Without the crew on the flight deck (excluding the Captain in question) I suspect the outcome would have been very different.

The CSM was the Leader in the Cabin.

The award received was entirely appropriate.

At the end of the day the Flight Deck has a gradient of authority. It is not a democracy.

The bleating was churlish.

I'm sure if there wasn't any crew on the flight deck the outcome would have been very different. For a start, who would've flicked the switches and who would've read the check list.

You may be right. Lisa Wilkinson got one. It says for media and mentoring but I think it was for services to Peter Fitzsimons. Thoroughly deserved for that I would have thought. I did feel a lot better after seeing Lisa got one.

CC is correct to have a go and put the 'alternative/offical' view. I also should have said 'rarely' not 'never' (the PC I was on has a dodgy 'r' key so I do try to choose words with few 'r's') and it is good for the pilot group. Also good for the Company to have an official Pilot Hero when so much IA was brewing. Strangely the same Cpt wasn't even invited in for Tea and Bickies (let alone summary dismissal as per the contract) when he mysteriously appeared on the front page of the Oz to say how overpaid pilots were some years later, but of course Elaine got through pilots 30% pay cut and a B scale for the future so that's now all water under the bridge.

It would have been VERY nice however, if he had possibly thought to pass on some of the many hundreds of thousands of dollars earned on the speaking circuit (among others) to (even just) the crew who 'helped' him get the jet on the ground in one piece. Even nicer if he had thought about that before he mentioned on the front page of The Australian how they all deserved a pay cut.

I'm very happy for Lisa Wilkinson. Pass me a beer. And Scotch come to think of it, and I shall get back to my BBQ. Don't be shy about passing more Scotch when I run out either....

It amazes how they give these awards to people who were only doing their job
I know people who spend all their spare time looking after injured and sick wildlife day and night 24 hours a day and never get as much as a thank you.

They give these awards to people who are recommended by someone who knows them and is sufficiently motivated to fill in a simple form and round up three referees who will support the nomination. It's not difficult but it won't happen tomorrow. Two years is not unusual. Sadly you will note that there are quite a few posthumous awards on the list.

I just learnt a very valuable lesson in skim reading.... Don't over-skim! I thought for a second they were naming Badgerys Creek after him!

It appears being a slut to the media is one of the pre-requisites for getting these gongs, even Tina Arena got one for services to music - I'm sure she deserved it.

I'm also sure that if you're doing the hard slog (literally) and avoiding them media clowns then there is no hope for you at all. But if you have an ounce of integrity then that may not matter to you one bit.

I personally know of two ratbags that have received these gongs, totally undeserved.

Maybe they should be called Emmy's or Logie's.

Or the guy who gets asked to resign from Ansett (because he kept raping the FA's) and 25 years later gets an OAM for a non-aviation related activity. So much for their research!

But seriously?
The pilot flying pushed the joystick left and the aircraft followed and when it landed it was either going to stop (or not), regardless of who was pushing on the brakes. The engineering team at Airbus built a heavily redundant aircraft that saved their butts.

Well both aircraft were perfectly flyable after the initial failure (once due icing, the other due CB pulling that was not allowed). I would say that the redundancy worked perfectly.

What Airbus didn't take into account was the FO pulling full backstick at altitude and riding the stall to the ground like a big wave surfer. As that's not a normal flight manoeuvre, I wouldn't call it Airbus's fault.
