Qantas Fleet Order Speculation
Hi All,
As we have heard, Qantas will be announcing their intended fleet order in September.
A decision between the B787 and A350 is on the table, and
Rumour is, the Airbus A321NEO will replace the Boeing 737NG on the domestic market.

heard from NZ turning around an A320 is a lot slower than a B733. Obviously more seats, but much slower apparently.

Think B717's will be around for awhile, maybe more flying on East coast? Then maybe C-Series flown by Network or similar? Will Cobham still be around, or folded back inhouse?😏
It will be 787 and 737 max.
717 to be brought back under the mainline brand.
Network will fly whatever is too lean for the 717.
There will be recruitment into mainline in the next 18 months or so

Going Boeing There is no way that the A350 will be selected by QF.
They can turn the Jetstar A320s fairly quickly, why would there be a difference if you change the paint scheme?
P.S. regarding NZ A320s, the bra boys rumors, confirmed by the Woolongong, and Cairns re-fullers its the drugs that the baggage handles have to remove from the hold that takes the extra time.
Agree with Going Boeing, no chance of 350 for Qantas, the 787s at prices Qantas got em to good to not take up!
I think QF/JQ will ultimateley end up with a fleet of A380s/787s and 320/321 Neos, which will make for a pretty efficient fleet!

The reality is that the choice comes down to Hyundai or BMW.....
The Airbus is the Hyundai of the sky. Looks great when new, has that new car smell and runs really well. But in a few years that plastic trim starts to lift, the new car smell becomes the scent of 'the great unwashed' and it just doesn't last.
The Boeing product is the BMW of the sky. It gives all that the Airbus provides in the early days, but the doors always retain that solid 'clunk' as they close and the machine just keeps going and going and going, without that terrible 'whine' from its engines that is characteristic of the Bus.
Boeing remains the preferred choice of pilots and passengers alike, for very good reasons.

He Said What,
While this may have been true in the past (although I doubt it), this doesn't apply the the new "plastic Fantastic" 787.
I've seen more panels adrift in 18 months than 4 years on the A320, and there never was any clunk!
It's built to a price and a weight!

Surely from an operational efficiency perspective having one Boeing type in a sea of airbus type (or vice versa) is a recipe for unnecessary cost.
Given you can, given the right training, run CCQ with 350 and 320/321, and also given that changing from Boeing to airbus is akin to a religious conversion, it seems less efficient to have one Boeing type when Airbus make an airframe that can cover the same (or wider) market segment.
Throw in that they already run 330's and it makes a convincing argument for going 350 not 787.

Nunc est bibendum
It would take a pretty special deal from Airbus to convert the 787 options into A350 orders. That said, Boeing would probably make more money selling those 50 options elsewhere than what they've made from Qantas. I wonder if we would need to give them back their compo money for the late delivery of those 787s from the early days.
There is a HUGE gap between the 787 and the A380. A 777X in the mix there somewhere as a 744 replacement from 2020 or will they just get A380NEOs to cover that?
My guesses:
A couple more A380s
A shed load of 787s- initially for expansion and later to cover A330 replacement.
Maybe some options on 777X- better timeframe for QF than the A350.
Line ball call on 737 replacement as to whether to go A320 family or 737 MAX. Either way, new aeroplanes needed commencing from 2020 or thereabouts to replace 738.
It's the 738 replacement that is interesting. There is no doubt the A320 family (including the possibility of A319) adds significant flexibility to Qantas ops. I'm not sure how much training costs enter into their decision making and it won't be a small number but sometimes the bullet just has to be bitten.
