I have flown for 4 airlines including QF. To suggest that the piloting standards are higher or the training is to a higher quality in legacy carriers is complete rubbish. You do your cyclics, your CRM, your EPs etc etc just like every other airline.
Once you get around a few airlines you realise they are all pretty much the same - they all have duds who should not be allowed to look at aeroplanes, they all have highly experienced old timers, they all have young guys high on talent, they all have the lazy grizzlers - and in Oz, they all train to the same standards. Yes, the support around them may not be there, but to say that applies to the pilots and engineers - well that is just plain wrong and offensive, and shows you have believed for too long too many of your QF wet dreams.
AND THIS IS NOT A SHOT AT QF pilots = the vast majority are great guys with a love of aviation, making a living for their family, and generally devoid of supremist egos.

The first three minutes of the video link below are of interest, but beg one question. When the carbon tax goes and leaves a AUD $200, 000,000 (ish) hole in the bucket, how will that lost revenue be replaced and by whom? If the airlines were in good shape, would the normal tax levies cover (increased revenue) some of it, or would the airlines simply loose the money internally to fuel the low yield merry-go-round?? Could support for the removal of this tax be part of the quid pro quo for 'assisting' an ailing industry? Devious games these fellahin play.

Qantas are not going down the tubes anytime soon. The current management have totally mismanaged the airline over the past five years and have taken it into a capacity war of its own making! The outcome of this may be that the QSA gets repealed. This is actually a total bonus for the current board, nothing like getting rewarded for bad performance.
Qantas has plenty of cash, lots of assets, a brand that can be recovered and plently of loss making areas that can still be cut (Jetstar Vietnam, Japan, Hongkong etc). Also imagine the savings when they finally replace the 747's, 767's and some of the A380s with twinjets.
In the overall scheme of things a $250 million loss considering the money they have thrown away is actually better than I expected. I remember pre-restructure at British Airways they were posting losses in excess of 1 BILLION pounds along with a 4.5 billion pound pension hole.
Things at Qantas just are not that bad.

Quite possible yes, after Joyce has publicly trashed his own brand, called into disrepute his own management and created uncertainty in the minds of travellers.
Second half is always slightly weaker anyway, but I think that Joyce's public ineptitude has likely cost an extra 100 million or so loss. (At a guess)
Also, now that the Asian JQ growth has been halted the Asian competitors will hasten to kill it off. More losses. More artless management of a failed strategy. Whatever hope there was of selling those dogs has now been dashed.

Just saw a quick grab. Basically this is management bull**** that is intended to deceive and distract everyone.Palmer said he could fix it if he was CEO, so maybe that would actually solve the problem(s).

Should have added tongue in cheek. There are many reasons why Palmer would not be suitable (not the least was he never seems to go to work in Canberra) but that wasn't my point, it was that he saw this for what it was and felt it was capable of being fixed with proper management.
