Was that the 'break' that the flight deck door kept on getting slammed shut to ensure compliance with various CAR's that require positive confirmation by the captain of the flight deck door being closed?

600.

Your numbers are correct. Qantas accounts are incredibly rubbery. It is extremely to apportion between the operating segments. What we need in this country before we have our own version of Enron is a Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Qantas ONLY profitability. EBITAR based on Revenue

2007 $906million EBITAR on $13519million Revenue or 6.7% profit
2008 $1033.8million EBITAR on $12717million Revenue or 8.1% profit
2009 $1363million EBITAR on $11710million Revenue or 11.63% profit
2010 (half year) $710million EBITAR on $5295million Revenue or 13.4% profit

Amazing! Qantas is getting more and more profitable but the situation has never been so dire!

The actual owning of the assets, like Qantas does, gives a great vehicle to write off taxes on depreciation for the whole group.

Either myself or the Captain has made them on all bar one of the last dozen sectors I've flown. The exception was a late night short sector after a long day. We were just too buggered and too short of time. No PA of any type was made on that sector at all (lucky they didn't need us to extend duty limits, as I believe you risk being stood down and booted out of the crew hotel for being too tired these days ).

On the first sector of my most recent trip the Capt asked me about the PAs as it was his first since the PIA was authorised. I said "yep, I'm going to make one". He said "ok no probs". He then made one on his sector too. Only another 7 PAs to go this trip. Universally positive feedback from all walks of life too. Especially comforting was the Chairman's Lounge FF who offered his total support a couple of days ago.

If a Capt ordered me not to make one (highly improbable on my fleet), it would be a very quiet pattern from then on, I can tell you. If he's reluctant for some unknown reason well that's his business I guess, but ordering the F/O not to do it either would be pretty bad darts, I reckon.

Remember, only 83% total of the eligible pilots voted for PIA. While that is an overwhelming majority, the 17% who didn't
During the PIA ballot 89% of the eligible pilots voted as to whether or not they endorsed PIA. Of those 89%, 94% voted Yes. I think whoever is implying that 17% of pilots didn't vote for PIA is using misleading management speak. There is no evidence to suggest the 11% who didn't vote would have voted no. Likewise there is no evidence that 94-100% of them would have voted yes. Some people I know were away on long service leave and didn't manage to vote, had they managed to vote they would have voted yes.

I just wanted to make the point that whilst management would like the media/public to believe that 17% of pilots are not in favour of PIA, this spin is not the case. It could equally be argued if that other 11% managed to vote it may have been a 93% yes vote overall. Just depends how you want to extrapolate the figures.

Fact is that 47 out of every 50 pilots who voted will take PIA. As to the 11% who didn't vote, it is unknown was to that they would do.

Not having a go at you directanywhere, just wanting to clarify to people that the vote was not 83% yes 17% no.

Stay united folks.

Just went to an Asian country and the PA's were made.

They were made at the holding point, just prior to takeoff where: all the cabin prep has been done, everyone is strapped in, nerves are the highest and BOOM out comes the pa. Im pretty sure thats the best time to make this pa!

Actually it isnt as that is during the sterile cockpit phase and as it isn't safety related it is a violation of FAM policy . Stick to the rules boys and girls . We don't need to give them any ammunition . They are hanging themselves nicely already .

Regi, agreed.

I guess I was trying to say it's 83% yes, 17% no OR don't care.

I am extrapolating from that to say it's a reasonable assumption that that the 17% no/ don't care are probably far along enough in their career that the current situation is not of concern to them.

That more than likely puts them as senior Captains on the the senior fleets and may go some way to explaining why PAs aren't being made on certain services.

Cheers.

Made the PA at the holding point? During the Sterile Cockpit period? Idiots.

There are a couple of reasons why the PA may not have been made on some flights.

1. Pilots needed to have the 'script' in the form of a card which was mailed to their postal address. I received mine last Wednesday and duly made the PA's on both of my next sectors over the weekend, and

2. With or without the 'script' they will never be making the PA (figure out for yourselves why that would be the case!)

If a Captain did not want me to make the PA I would abide by his/her wishes (after all it is their jet!). The 'social' ramifications up track would clearly then be obvious for me.

Exclamation

Prior to push back, in flight above transition and prior to cabin prep on descent, after parked at the destination is the guidance I've given to the F/Os I've flown with.

Announcement timing

I think the best time has to be just before or just after (prepared to take advice on that) John Travolta says that there's no-one he'd rather have then a Qantas pilot flying

I'm l/h cabin crew and have heard the PA made on every one of my flights (all with different tech crew).
Some passengers have clapped, but one **** in business class shouted out at the top of his voice "Just shut up and fly the plane!" Unfortunately, he hasn't been the only one who has made negative comments.

Bucky...

Who looked to be the biggest dill? The pilot, the 'clap-ees' or the 'yeller'.
The PA is not intrusive or offensive but still, one can't please all the people all the time. Thanks for the perhaps veiled support. I've heard far more positive than negative comment; but then again I'm not CC and you're at the 'coal-face'.

"Just shut up and fly the plane!"
That's what we're striving to achieve.

After making my PA on most of my flights, on one occasion was speaking to a very high positioned person in company ******. He told me he, and many in his cadre are fully supporting of us, and have told AJ so. There is support out there.

Lol. John no longer features on the video. As of this morning it's just one of our guys saying his bit and then launches into the demo as it was last week. Not sure if one of our guys is still at the end or not.

Now, the real question is why QF have gotten rid of JT so quickly? It's been less than a year. Could it be because what he had to say played straight into our hands and the current dispute with the management?

prairegirl must have posted just as I started typing out the reply.

On my four sectors since being back at work (LH CC) the announcement has been made close to top of descent and has only been met by nods of the head and customers opposite my seat voicing their support when I sat down for landing. That was on every sector.

The announcement is discreet, to the point and unobtrusive. For someone to yell a negative response I would suggest that they have a personality disorder.

GOOD BYE JOHNNY T!!

the problem with the announcements

we are human - we have no attention span - it turned a lot of heads the first ten days - now it's just more mumbo jumbo here's where the whistle is.

now don't start throwing stones - i'm not saying it's a bad idea - i'm saying, like everything else in life, it has a shelf life. from what i've seen on my last four flights - the expiration date for catching people's attention is drawing nigh.

and Keg - great minds think alike (or was that very tired people come to the same delirious conclusions!)
