Beware of thieves at screening points

Just a little story of how low people can go and how hard it is to catch offenders with the best of evidence..

I was going through the departures screening point at YPPH a short time ago and I removed all my metals, including my wedding band, and placed them on the tray for xray, Went through with no problem, then at the other side started putting myself back together. The Lady on the machine asked about aerosols in my bag, then the missus distracted me further. We then moved up to the lounge, where pretty quickly I realised my wedding band wasn't on and I raced downstairs to the screening point and asked the guards to check the trays and I started looking as well. They didn't seem too concerned and said I must have dropped it or left it in my bag. I responded that I was sure I didn't put it back on after xray and it is in one of the trays. No luck there so I got the staff to make an announcement over PA and then had to board my flight with a very unhappy start to our holiday.

The next day I rang airport lost and found and got no joy but the lady gave me the number of security manager. Got his voicemail and then tried security direct with no help or luck. The security manager rang back later and proved to be a very capable, motivated person. He looked up the footage from the screening point and got very good footage of a person reaching into my tray and putting my wedding band in his pocket then happily walking past me and my wife with his own girlfriend. The manager burnt the footage and told me to make a police report and he would hand it over and also alert the Feds to give a hand to WAPOL.

On my return to YPPH I made the report to an unmotivated proby connie who told me to check out the local pawn shops as most of the stolen goods end up there ( nice to know ). 2 weeks went by with no news so I thought I'd check up on the case to discover nothing had happened and they felt the case was closed as they couldn't ID the offender from the footage of him checking in, boarding etc.

So at the most secure point in an airport/country, someone can steal from you, have their actions recorded, their picture taken, their ID checked at check in, and get away with it? The manager told me it happens about weekly. Keep an eye on your gear at these points and don't assume you're safe anywhere in an airport. Security is a joke. And to the dog that took my ring, please one day may I meet you so I can show you my appreciation at your wonderful morals.

Oh and before anyone explains that you don't need to remove your ring, understand it was the first thing my wife said to me which made me feel sooo much better.

Any chance you could post an image of this scumbag and his wench on this thread?

Maybe somebody on here could assist with identifying this oxygen thief.

Your wife is an intelligent woman WOGboy... on the other hand she did marry you... Your wife is a mostly intelligent woman WOGboy, particularly in the matter of jewelery!

Seriously, that sucks, good on you for chasing it up so much and getting the information you did, too bad it wasn't enough to get the little ****er.

Ahh Choice bro, yes she is an intelligent woman, as is your fine missus. Aren't we lucky boys ehh.

I have a range of "other" people seeking answers as to the thieving clowns ident and hopefully we'll get a result. Unfortunately, until the images are released for public consumption I am unable to post, but given the lack of response by the thin blue line I may seek a more "current" media outlet to make public the "morals of a whore on LSD" offenders picture. So his mum and dad can be proud of him and his actions.

That's really frigging low. I could understand nicking cash, but a wedding ring FFS?

Unfortunately airports do attract thieves, both professional and oppurtunistic. I wish they'd put better screens on X-ray belts, some of them you can grab stuff as soon as it's spat out which makes it impossible to monitor who's grabbing what.

Don't kill me for saying it (I know it doesn't help you now) but having worked in terminals for far too long I never use the little boxes but put any loose items in my bag. Of course, I carry a bag, some people don't.

Yeah, same here. My laptop goes in the tray then all my loose crap goes in the laptop bag. I didn't even do that for security reasons, it's just easier only having to put the bag and the laptop through the machine, now I'll be sure to always do it that way.

Good luck with your inquiries WOG.

Yeah, similar thing happened to me at Cairns Airport last week, fortunately only loose change. The delay that distracted me was the damn walk through metal detector that kept going off with no metal detected with the hand held. Time enough for someone to lift from my tray.

Recently went through security the western security point at Sydney Domestic (I use this one because it's always quiet). As a matter of course, I just threw everything in my pockets into the blue trays. This included my new 1 day old set of oakley sunglasses. To cut a long story short, I realised I had left my sunglasses at security as I was walking down the aerobridge (about 3 min later). I raced back and was told they were not there. This was a weekend morning departure, there was nobody around so I found it hard to believe that a passenger has stolen my glasses. Essentially, security had pocketed them as soon as I walked away. I was absolutely furious. I essentially accused them of theft and all they kept saying was "ring the main security office on monday morning...maybe someone will hand them in". Of course.....they never were. I wished I had done what you had and actually chased down the CCTV footage. Anyway, beware, Security Officers...protecting your possessions for their eventual possession.

We you able to find the footage of him actually checking in, you would know roughly what time and maybe airline? Do the airlines have computer records of who checked in and what time, if so I'm thinking you could possibly get a name from the airline might need the police to do this for security reasons. Best of luck finding it.

sadly its not jst airports, everywhere in oz is like that when it comes to police and security, unless you kill someone, the police just dont give a ****..

i had an ex steal $5000 from me, she forged bank documents, and withdrew the cash over the counter, i have footage of it, the bank admitted she usd false paperwork(forged signature), the police know, and all i have been told from the bank and police is.... too bad..go away.

same if your ca get stolen from the airport carpark, again, police just dont care.. response was, "ring your insurance company"

as for security guards, they are the biggest bunch of thieves i have ever seen.
Hangar 2, 40 yrs without being touched, one week under security protection, every electrical item in the lunch rooms went missing... of course, security didnt see a thing...

oh, get the security footage on to youtube and post it as many places as you can with you story... internet justice can work wonders.

I agree with the suggestion re passing it on to the TV and YouTube. Forward the link here as well .

Whilst those shows are rubbish, and they couldn't care about your wedding ring, I suspect the airport security side of the episode my raise some eyebrows.

As you said they checkin, they have their photo taken etc and nobody can or more to the point could be bothered to find them.

Murderers and thieves are free to do what they like at an airport. You have to wonder where is safe

I just hope you didn't have a nail file in your bag or it would be off to the slammer for you.

I'd consider the security mob liable for your loss - They are the ones that require you to empty your pockets, etc, and you have no control over what happens to your property after it leaves you.
They must be held responsible while you property is out of your hands.

Absolutely they should!
The best system I've seen so far is where you are given a plastic laminated number corresponding to the one on the box you are given that you put your stuff in, and you hang on to that as you walk through the detector. You then don't get access to your box on the other side until you produce the number to the person waiting there with your box.

Seems to work well, but as someone said previously, the best method is to just stuff everything into your carry on bag (if you've got one).

Must Be A Perth Airport Thing...

Recently I went through the security screening point at Perth airport. out of the corner of my eye I saw this guy take out his cut throat razor, remove the blade from it and hide it in another compartment in his bag.

We get closer to security, his bag goes through the x-ray machine, I see the x-ray image myself (im not qualified, but it was obvious) and it didnt get challeneged. So i quietly speak up to the supervisor...

The F&%KING poor excuse for a security guard stopped the guy, searched his bag and removed the HANDLE to the razor, not the blade. then happily sent the passenger on his way.

Would have been interesting if managed to find a Federal Police Officer and told him the news...TERMINAL LOCK DOWN....

Maybe if they paid the guards more than $16/hr they might be able to scrape "just above" the bottom of the barrel and find someone with 1/2 a brain!

the penalties for that aren't that high anyway.

If you realy want to get in trouble the best way to go is Tax evasion. Take money from the government and you'll pay dearly.

Why do you take your wedding ring off? Mines all metal and I never take it (or my watch) off.

my thought exactly. I have a decent sized watch, ring, gold chain (no medallion though...I know what you are thinking) and I never take any of them off. Never have a problem.....I do take my shoes off at LAX and SFO but never have a problem with them at LHR or Aussie ports)
