Stage 1

I had my stage 1 today, I did 39/50 in diagramming and 36/40 in spatial reasoning. I'm not sure how much of this is also correct. Does anyone know on what basis they choose people? For the motivation paper they said the pass mark is 21/30 so 70%.

tommymac 30th October 2012 21:09

Also did stage 1 today, suprised at how many failed the 1st paper, i think of the 36 only 18/19 got to the 2nd round of tests. GL to those that did tho and lets hope its good news :ok:

eddtr1 31st October 2012 06:02

Hi

I did my stage 1 on the 30th, after all the mix up - Still wasn't sure what that was all about, putting everyone an hour forward, anyho.

I was very surprised to see just over half the people walk out at the end. I thought I had got through and then when I saw so many people leave I thought "hold on maybe I'm in the failed group" but that that chap asked and we were through!

Not sure how I did on the rest of the tests. Good luck to those that went and got through.

finchyp1 31st October 2012 10:41

Sounds like I might have been in the same group! I feel sorry for the person who had passed, but walked out with the guys who hadn't anyway!
Good luck!

Jimbo125 31st October 2012 21:19

Sat stage 2 today, I'd be very surprised if I get an invite to stage 3 - made a monumental c*** up on the DART test. I'm gutted :ugh:

ATC test at stage 2

Hi there,

The section where you go to fareham (my current stage) where you have to read and learn the booklet of information, referred to as the ACT paper portion of the testing phase... Is this multiple choice? and to what extent does information such as individual plane models flight speed need to be known?

thanks.

PhiltheReaper 1st November 2012 10:43

Hi there,

unless it has changed since I went through, you may be speaking about "Stage 1".

At this stage there is an information pack designed to test your "ATC Motivation" on the day. This contains basic info about ATC and then at the back has some stats of aircraft. Are we speaking about the same document?

If so, you will be tested multiple choice at the Stage 1 day, and a rough understanding of the "sorts" of cruise speeds etc will more than suffice. From memory the options are rather absurd.

How fast does a B747 cruise?
a) 0.3 kts
b) 30 kts
c) 300 kts
d) 900,000,000,000,000 kts

(perhaps not quite that absurd, but you take my point that there is one obvious answer)

Hope that helps,

Phil

I got an email half an hour ago saying I passed to stage 2. The only available date currently is tomorrow, which I'm not really prepared for. I assume I need to keep checking the scheduling link for new dates, right?

CDNATPL 1st November 2012 11:41

I'm in the same situation, there is no way I can make it to a session tomorrow so will wait for new dates to show up.

somethingATCrelated 1st November 2012 12:29

Same situation as the above two posters. Found out I passed my Stage 1 today (took it on the 30th) and the only available time slot is tomorrow. I live 6-7 hours away by train so to make it I'd pretty much have to book and leave now which isn't really possible (due to money). I can't imagine they expect people to be able to make it on such short notice so hopefully there'll be new time slots put up soon. Could anyone confirm this because I'd have to do some serious train hopping otherwise.

malakajin 1st November 2012 13:21

New dates will come up soon ! happened every time ! at least you can hope for it

sorinc03 1st November 2012 13:45

Also, the site says we'd be asked to fill in an online bio-data questionnaire. I haven't got a request asking me to do so. Am I going to get it later?

eddtr1 1st November 2012 16:46

I take it for those that did the 1st stage on the 30th, if we have'nt heard anything by now we have probably not got through :ugh:

privatepyle 1st November 2012 23:05

Hi all,

This has been asked before by others but I have not yet found an answer:

Where do you find the practice examples on the SHL website?
The link from the NATS website directs you to the homepage and I am fed up wasting time trying to find them.

Any help much appreciated:)

PhiltheReaper 2nd November 2012 11:13

It doesn't necessarily mean that mate. For their own reasons NATS HR tell some people quickly and others very very slowly of their fate. It doesn't relate to your chances of success at all!

@privatepyle: I'm afraid I don't know, the links from my old email don't work either, so clearly it's been an issue for some time. What i would say is try to practice cube diagrams and you can't go far wrong.

CDNATPL 2nd November 2012 11:33

There are a few more dates for stage 2 posted.

Harida5a 2nd November 2012 12:58

is there anyone who did not receive any feedback ?

phoenix_87 2nd November 2012 13:50

Hey,
Im new here and just looking for some info on becoming an ATC. Im looking to apply and was wondering if anyone could tell me once youve signed up online how quick is it until you can take the tests? Also if I were to pass do I choose when to start training? Its just I live abroad but would move back to england if all went well and would like to start the training in april/may so was wondering when would be the best time to apply for the tests?

Thanks in advance!

Vick

vini123456789 2nd November 2012 16:06

i havent recieved any feed back yet positive or negitive. Guess i am out !!!

2changeornot2change 2nd November 2012 19:52

I actually aplied on 26th August. Have head NOTHING from NATS. Also, tried emailing and phoning them several times. Also left voice messages. Nobody ever got back to me to let me know if I was in or out. I'm presuming because it was over 2 months ago now, that I am O.U.T!

CDNATPL 2nd November 2012 21:54

Guys, just because some people received their results quicker has no bearing on your own success.

We were told that you are only in competition with yourself and when people gets results ahead of others that only means HR wants them through the process quicker. Its anyone's guess as to why that happens but if you read the previous posts you will some across many applicants who had to wait a fair bit of time for their results.

Stay positive!

Assi 2nd November 2012 22:10

Hi there!
Hi have the Stage1 the 27th of November. Could someone help me? I'd like to know the best way to arrive to Fareham from London...thank you so muach!!

owensamuel 3rd November 2012 19:20

Hi Assi,

Try National Rail Enquiries - Official source for UK train times and timetables

Assi 3rd November 2012 22:59

THanks OwenSamuel, i'll take a look!

enethers 4th November 2012 10:53

Hi All

I have my stage 1 on the 21st November, I live in London and is thinking of driving to Fareham would anyone advice this and does anyone know if there is parking facility there for visitors.

Contact Approach 4th November 2012 11:17

Is the stage 1 numeracy test similar to this? How many questions are there, and what's the time limit?

Speed Distance Time | Test

What else does the test encompass?

hanno1 4th November 2012 14:04

Hi,

I'm booked in for my stage 1 test on Wednesday and am just getting to grips with the document for the motivation test.

There's about 6 pages of info on different types of aircraft listing model numbers, seating numbers, cruising level, speed etc. Does anybody who has sat stage 1 recently know if you need to know this info in detail e.g an Airbus A318 has 107 seats and cruises at FL310 - FL370 or will a general idea of this info get you through e.g. if you're able to pick out the cruising speed from a list of possible answers?

Thanks!

privatepyle 4th November 2012 14:18

Where can I find cube and diagramming practice examples other than the ones on the PDF from NATS?

SHL link goes to homepage and I've tried searching the site with no luck.

Please someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks:O

PhiltheReaper 5th November 2012 11:02

Contact Approach and others

Hi Contact Approach,

You will find that a quick search through this thread will certainly provide the answers you are looking for.

However, Speed Distance Time does play a big part of the numeracy at Stage 1. Remember it's all in Kts, so your division by 60 being good can be a real help.

Good luck,

Phil

P.S. For those still waiting to hear from NATS after applying in August, I would keep ringing and emailing, it sounds like they have lost your application. It's unlikely that you simply failed and they never got back to you!

P.P.S. For those wondering when to apply to start next year... Apply NOW and then you will be in the process. At your Stage 3, they will ask when you can start, and you could at that stage mention your preference for April next year.

Finally: I am nobody of importance and certainly nobody in the know about NATS HR. I had my stage 3 interview recently (awaiting results) and so I speak from a position of little knowledge and even less experience, however I hope my pennies helped.

owensamuel 5th November 2012 12:14

I had my stage 3 on 01/11/12 and have just received the email to say I was unsuccessful. I passed the initial interview but failed on the group stages although I cannot be sure as they have said they will not provide feedback due to the amount of applicants they have received. Good luck to everyone else.

rr9 5th November 2012 12:30

stage 3

yep owen, i'm exactly the same as you :(.

Jimbo125 5th November 2012 16:12

Failed at stage 2 but I know exactly why that is :ugh:

I'll be back next year though, bring it

Stage 3 interview - 8th November

Hi all,

This is my first post. I have found this forum very useful with helping me prepare for the assessments.

Fortunately I have got through to stage 3 and have my interview on the 8th November.

Is there anyone else going on this date? I may be getting a taxi from Swanwick station at 07:30am. Would anyone want to share?

Thanks

natalee666 5th November 2012 19:10

stage 3

please help :)

Kimmikins 5th November 2012 19:19

The NATS careers questions has details about the Stage 3 assessment :ok:

Yakutake 5th November 2012 21:09

Hi everyone,

I was on stage 2 on the 6th of sept. I couldn't do the second part because the system fell down. After two months I've been told I didn't pass it... I am wondering if anybody who couldn't do the second part of stage 2 has passed it.

Cheers and good luck to everybody

d19err 5th November 2012 23:25

Hey,

Well done to everyone that hs been successful so far !! Got my stage 1 Exam on the 15th and was wondering if anyone can help.
The question i have is the boxes. Do you have 40 different boxes or is one flat out box used for a few questions. Also the main thing i was wondering is what layout is the flat box. T shape? L Shape?

Spatial ability tests free downloads

Psychometric mcq | Vskills

Some other example shapes half way down this page from the link are they used?
Thanks for all your help.

vini123456789 5th November 2012 23:35

3 layouts
flat T and L shape

d19err 5th November 2012 23:43

Hey Vini,

Thanks for that. What stage are you at Vini? What is the third layout? tryingto get my head round the acutal shape. Does the weblinks cover the shapes? How many different cubes do you use to answer all the questions?
Thanks for all your help

PhiltheReaper 6th November 2012 09:45

cubes

Stage 1 was a while ago for me, but from memory each cube diagram is used for somewhere around 3 - 5 questions.

The shapes become increasingly less obvious as far as I remember. Smash the practice in on cubes as hard as you can find and you can't go wrong.
