It is basically basic checking.
You have to match a sequence of letters and numbers with on that is in a column mixed with another 10 or so. There are five sections, each made up for five questions. The test is timed, with each section the time you have to match the sequence gets less. You get to practice it as much as you like before taking the actual test aswell.... Good luck. |
airthmetics
Hi, I'm new to this. Could anywone set some examples on the maths test????, or tell me where I can get hold of some problems of the same type as set on stage 1!, thanks in advance!!!, wish you all luck!!

Online Application completed, awaiting e-mail for the online test invitation. Let's get the ball rolling! :) |
Stage 1 Document question
At bottom of page 10 it says "The benefits of Mode S are that the controller should see a reduction in their RT workload..."
What does RT stand for? Have got an idea of what it might be (Radio Traffic or Radio Transmission) but want to be sure! Thanks |
I am acctually not sure which one of those are correct but both of them work :)
For people arranging visits, how quick was your contact at Swanwick to get back to you? Looks like I'll be spending a whole day at one of my local airport next week, hoping for CAVOK since it has a ton of VFR traffic when the weather allow which would be great to see. |
RT radiotelephone ( as you guessed it is to do with radio transmissions )
Good luck all Rgds AyrTC p.s just because it "works" does not mean it is correct:= |
Thanks for that, got another one..
Top of page 14 it mentions "a position on the MCT 157 degree radial".. What does MCT stand for? In relation to the Manchester VOR and "a position called ROGBI".. |
MCT doesn't stand for Manchester in this case?
Otherwise I cannot think what it would be. |
MCT is the Manchester VOR (I found pictures of it here UK Navaids Gallery - Manchester MCT VOR/DME :p).
ROGBI sounds like the name of a navigational point to me. |
European Class 3 Medical - Asthma
Just seeking some up to date information from people who have taken/passed the new medical.
I have mild asthma which requires twice daily use of a preventer and I rarely suffer from symptoms of asthma in normal day to say life, hence I rarely have to use the reliever inhaler. The NATS website states: "A past history of asthma may be acceptable but significant symptoms at time of application are likely to be disqualifying." The CAA website states (with regard to the European Class 3): "Assessment of asthma is on an individual basis." Having not been asked to mention this in my initial application to NATS, I'm now wondering how much of a problem this may be. My understanding is that the class of medical examination has changed recently for NATS (was just UK Class 1 ATCO). Does this mean the European medical is more thorough and difficult to pass? It's not clear from the CAA website how much a medical examination would cost (i.e. if I was to book it independently before going through the 3 NATS Selection Stages). Does anyone have any ideas? I can't imagine how gutted I would be if I passed Stage 3 only to fail the medical! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. |
TCR,
Mode S doesn't seem to have reduced RTF loading..............yet. |
Crazy,
Spot On. 113.55MHz. She's a-radiating as we speak. An approach aid, and an en-route navigation facility. |
Tcr - all I can say is that I had I mild history of asthma and Im a quite heavy smoker (I'm quitting soon) and I passed the medical.

got my feedback from my Stage 3 interview yesterday afternoon :ok:
It was very helpful, mostly because it was very specific and detailed - I know exactly where I went wrong (and reassuringly, it was where I suspected my answers had been a bit poor), and what aspects of the competencies they were hoping to see more of. As it was very specific feedback, it won't help anyone on here to post it up, and I probably shouldn't anyway, so I'll just repeat my earlier advice - focus on the competencies that NATS tell you they will be looking for, and times when you demonstrated them. That's all I needed to do and if I'd spent more time on just that I am confident I would now be scheduled for the February 2012 course :ugh: It was equally frustrating/comforting to hear that I was very close to getting through Stage 3 - I was urged to apply again (not that they needed to prompt me!) and I'm confident I'll get through next time round. On that note - see you all in October ;) |
@sambatc
Better luck next time matey. Must be really frustrating getting so close! |
sambatc, it's great to hear you're keeping your spirits up :)
I'm sure with all the experiences off stage 3 with you the next time it will be on to the medical for you, just keep going for it :) |
@sambatc sorry to hear those news. Keep the spirit up, you'll pass next time;)
To all going for stage 1 on 15th April at 10:00 AM. I've booked a room in Premier Inn Fareham... I hope to meet someone :} Cheers |
I'm pretty nervous about my stage 3 interview in a few weeks. I have a general idea of what they looking for but it appears as though they are very specific.
I can only do my best at the end of the day. |
Stage 1 ?
Hey everyone :D
I'm sorta new to this forum... and I had a question... For stage 1 , what sort of S/D/T questions do they ask? and how much of the work book that they gave us do they ask on the test? I've booked my test April 8th at 10:00! Anyone else gonna be there? G12 :) |
Hi, could anyone tell me exactly what is included in the booklet they give you to learn. Would be good to know what you are expected to know before the interviews, even if I won't be applying for a few months, so thanks in advance.
Matt |
Hi,
has any one got or could PM me the number to contact recruitment team as I have not had any replys since I have re-applied over a month ago. Is any one else waitin for invitation for a 1st stage or had any problems with applying apart from me and the other guy from here ? It's getting frustrating now, it was pretty quick last year. |
Completed the online test earlier today. Felt it went well, did the practice set twice and got 23/25 both times (don't know if that's good or not for this). I know I got 2 wrong for sure in the assessment one.
Anyone know the waiting times for an e-mail from NATS regarding what next (or not)? I've been told about 3 days or so by a friend. EDIT: I was been an OTT fool, received my Stage 1 invitation this morning. Will look at dates soon |
problem
At 15 mph, how far do you travel in 2 hours and 8 mins?,
The answer is 32, out of which 15x2=30,... But how would I figure out the distance in 8 min??, surely there should be an easier way than 15X0,133... I mean, to multiply that in your head ain't easy What speed covers 95 miles in 25 mins?, now this one... 95000/416?=228 --> are we suppsd to know how to do this mentally? |
I am Back
Hi boys and girls!
I have just applied AGAIN for NATS. I reached stage 3 last year and to my devastation failed. So I am back for round 2 :ok: Just a quick bit of info please....It has now been two days since i submitted my application online and still no invitation to the online test. Last year I received my invitation within 12 hours. Maybe the times have changed or I was just lucky before. How long has it been taking for you lot? Thanks Seb |
@SebbyK
I sent my application at 20:45 on Monday and received my online test invitation at just after 09:00 on Tuesday so something doesn't seem right. I'd email them :) |
luisjuan,
I always find these sort of questions have an easier way of solving than the long multiplication! e.g 15mph = 60/15 = 4 minutes per mile so 8 mins = 2 miles. 95miles in 25 mins, divide both sides by 5: 95/5=19 25/5 =5, then 60/5 = 12 & 12 *19 = 228. Simpler than the decimals! Hope this helps. |
Hey Dave, thanks!, you've really helped!
|
:(
Hi all :),
As my stage 1 interview is coming closer it feels like i haven't done any sort of revision for it especially for S/D/T and spatial reasoning and diagramming. So i thought I'll ask here about any specific books people have used or are using especially for S/D/T and numeracy? I did buy some books regarding IQ tests , mental arithmetic tests ( specifically for interviews) but they were rubbish :( Help por favor? it would be really appreciated :) Thank-you, N P.S. Anyone has Stage 1 on 13th May in Fareham ? |
Really looking forward to my stage 2 in Fareham on 3rd May ! Anyone else this date? Are you staying overnight? Wish I could do some practice tests or something to prepare....just been trying the luxosity (or whatever you call it) website trying examples - and basic brain training.
Hope your all well :) |
I tried a ton of stuff to prepare for stage 2, I don't belive it made much diffrence on my score. So just find some fun games and play those, it might help you a bit and it'll be good fun ;)
I liked Tetris myself, turns out you can play Tetris online against other people, and use combos and stuff to try and beat the others! I spent many hours on that during the christmas holiday :p |
fuel calc
Hi, anybody knows an easy and quick way to resolve fuel calculations like the two under?, I do get down to the solution but it neccesarily takes me to the use of pen and paper due to the complexity of the operations and that's precisely what I wanna avoid... thankss
You travel 1012 miles. How much fuel will you need if you burn 180 kgs per hour, and are travelling at 1380 mph? You have used 88 kgs of fuel in the past 2 hours and 45 mins. How much do you burn per hour? Really appreciate your help!!! ;) |

Basically its asking you 88 divided by 2.75 It is easier for me if I express 2.75 as a fraction, so 11 quarters (or 11/4) 88/(11/4) You can then times 88 by the inverse of the fraction. =(88x4)/11 =352/11 =32 Or another way actually, still think of 2 hrs 45 mins as 11/4 hours.. Divide 88 by 11 which equals 8.. If you add another 1/4 to the total, i.e. 12/4, that equals 96 kgs in 3 hours.. You can then simply divide 96/3= 32 |

Thanks TCR

27 feb 2011- Questions about NATS recruitment test!
hi everybody ...
i'm new here (PPRuNe Forums),i've got my log just for some minutes ago!! i passed the Online test for NATS in January and i've booked my next test " assessment day one " on 15th April at Parkway. i really fancy becoming an Air Traffic Controller...and i'm really worried for this test!! Can anybody let me know some information about the test?? What is it about?? which kind of questions does it include? Some Advice...??!!!:ooh: and i would like to understand if in this my next test there are just questions about the "NATS RECRUITMENT GUIDE" (that i've received by email) or also are there questions about Maths, spatial reasoning test, and a diagrammatic reasoning test? Please....some help is requested!! I'm looking forward to receive them.....:) |
Hello Giuseppe! phase 1 at NATS consists in a series of tests. The first test is about the material / documents NATS provides you (25 sheets I think) and a numeracy test. If you pass these tests you take another 2 tests, quote (from NATS): "a spatial reasoning test, and a logical analysis test called Diagramming".
So, you will take 4 tests if lucky :E Hope to have helped you Cheers EDIT: by the way, I'm also attending phase 1 on Fareham, 15th April at 10:00 AM |
First of all good luck to both of you.
Giuseppe, I would suggest reading back through at least the last 10 pages of this thread for useful information/ Phil |
Hello FoxtrotCharlie7 and PhiltheReaper,
really thanks for your information...do you know what sort of numeracy test we will be given???and how can i make some exercise for it??? Because about the materials/documents NATS i don't think to have any problem...but i'm worried for the numeracy test!!!!!! Can somebody give me some advice about it???.... Thanks...and anyway good luck to everybody !!! |
Hi...PhiltheReaper,FoxtrotCharlie7 and everybody!!
really thanks for the information about the 1phase of NATS... but do you know if this series of tests are all in the same day???? However...can somebody give me some advice how take some information about the numerical test and preparing for it ( some kind of exercise...etc..)??? pleaseeee...:O |
Hello again Giusepp. I think that when you are invited to attend these tests, you are supposed to do them in a couple of hours (I think 2 hours 30 minutes).
Cheers |
