Good luck sambatc :) Look forward to hearing how you got on!

sambatc 10th February 2011 17:08

thank you everyone for the good luck wishes! I'm home now, half way through my first beer - it's a long day!

It felt like it went allright, so now the wait begins!

hatemyjob 10th February 2011 17:36

Was the interview as difficult as I've heard?

Sofia ATC 10th February 2011 20:56

Is it worse that stage 2?

Help Help

Hi :)

Is anyone sitting the Stage 1 test in May in Farenham? :D

Also , I wanted to ask about cubes tests :\ I can't see them on the documents NATS sent us , so I am assuming you are all referring to spatial reasoning ones?

Confussion , confussion and confussion

I have bought few books on psychometric apprtitutde tests but I don't really find them helpful enough to be honest as the questions on the documents seemed a lot different than these in the book(s).

PhiltheReaper 11th February 2011 12:26

Hi Pink Nails!

First of all good luck in your Stage one! :D

Secondly Cubes: they are spacial reasoning tests based around cube nets. So we all just abbreviate that to "cubes".

Playing Tetris helps so I hear. ;)

Hi guys,

just wondered whether any one have been reapplying recently and had any problems with getting the invitation for the 1st stage, as I reapplied bout two weeks ago and have not had any replies since.

I had failed 3rd stage last year, used to get me invitations and results the following day though now I have not had any replies so far which is kinda worrying.

Anyone knows wot could cause the delay ?

marco888 11th February 2011 14:56

Hi toomek.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I think they're getting through a large back log of stage 1 applications at the moment. I applied about 2 weeks into January and I've not heard anything since.

Pinknails92 11th February 2011 19:20

Hey, thanks for telling me :)

It doesn't mean that i have to physically do them, right? as in physically draw them or something to understand, oh dear i find it really hard to explain myself :(

Oh and I was trying to find diagramming tests on google and I came across University of Kent's website about spatial reasoning etc. So I am quoting it here , it's not a lot of help but a way to begin, I suppose :8 : Non-Verbal Reasoning Test

Also, on this website they call Diagramming tests - abstract reasoning tests , so I started to find out about them on google and found that UKCAT has similar tests to that of NATS . Such as , numeracy , spatial reasoning and diagramming ( although, this one is not quiet the same ) Hence, I wanted to see if anyone else had tried using UKCAT books or practice test papers? or is it just me being silly.

You'll probably find that I am genuinely so scared of sitting this test :{

SALH 12th February 2011 09:22

ARGHHH, EVERYONE is getting stage 3 test dates to select but I still haven't been sent anything?!?!?! This is getting so frustrating now.....I completed stage 2 in October and was successful (I was told that news early November) and received one stage 3 date which was the following day which was an impossibility, and have since then received no options for another stage 3 date!!!!
I've already emailed NATS 3 times since then about it all but haven't got any more dates, rather more I've just been advised to wait for more to come up, yet people are being sent dates who have only just passed stage 2!?
Does anyone have any ideas what I should do please? I have just sent another email to the NATS recruitment team but it's seeming a bit awkward now, that being the fourth I've just sent!!
Thanks :)

SALH 12th February 2011 09:30

Ignore that post actually, I've received an immediate reply and therre are selection dates available woohoo!!!!!! :) an April date and 3 available May dates :) is anyone doing stage 3 around these dates? Thanks!

And sorry I forgot, GOOD LUCK SAMBATC!!! I hope you've passed!! ;)

PhiltheReaper 12th February 2011 16:11

On the cubes, you're looking at a set of cube nets, which are already drawn, and multiple choice answers for which "built" cube actually fits the net (or a fifth possible choice that none do).

Hope that makes sense. It's explained clearly on the day, so being awake and alert, with a good concentrating head on is the best preparation for Stage 1.

umm... well, yeah. it's not easy, at all.

Sofia ATC said

you can't really compare the 2, they're testing in completely different ways. Personally I think I'm stronger with computer tests than answering awkard questions, but that's just me!

Now, we were sworn to secrecy on any details regarding stage 3, so I'll be careful with what I say...

Group exercise - don't worry about it, be yourself, don't be an arse. That's all the advice you need.

Interview - personally, I feel that all the preparation I did based on tips, example questions and stuff found online and on here was wasted time. By far the best advice, and personally I'd say the only advice you need, is what NATSgive you themselves. If I'd prepared based solely on that I think I would have done better.

Hopefully I was good enough anyway... results should be coming next week :ok:

Crazy Voyager 12th February 2011 19:27

Hm, good thing I just read through the NATS paper on stage 3 earlier today then I guess...

I hope it went well sambatc, let us hope for a quick and positive reply!

KirtjE 12th February 2011 20:44

Crazy: NATS paper on Stage 3? Which one are you talking about? :o

Crazy Voyager 12th February 2011 21:10

Batfink79 12th February 2011 21:12

FoxtrotCharlie7, I am down for the 13:30 time on the day. Flying down the day before and get in to Southampton at about 21:00. give or take a few minutes.

Not sorted a hotel yet, as I have had to put my car through MOT, renew insurance and everything this month. So no chance of booking a hotel on top of flights aswell lol

Best of luck with the result of your stage 3 sambatc! Fingers crossed for positive news!

FoxtrotCharlie7 12th February 2011 22:12

Hey Batfink79! I'm still trying to see what am I going to do... I think I'll fly to Gatwick, then book a hostel in travel lodge in Southampton. I think that from Southampton train station (it's St Denys stop or something like that the one closest to the hostel) is 20 minutes to Swanwick Station (NATS CENTRE). I still don't know what to do.... ryanair flies from Girona (BARCELONA) to Gatwick for 100 pounds onwards :ugh: same as Easy !!!!!!

Hope to get a better offer.

Cheers!

Batfink79 12th February 2011 22:37

Was quite liking the look of the Solent, but check out is prior to 11am... It's that close to the test centre, that I doubt I could stretch the walk out for 2hrs.

Flights from Leeds Bradford to Southampton are costing me £85. So relatively speaking your flight prices look OK. (I couldn't believe it when I had to pay £9 just for the pleasure of paying for the tickets lol)

FoxtrotCharlie7 13th February 2011 12:03

Stage 1 dates for Prestwisk are up guys!!!! :ok:

belfastboy 14th February 2011 18:02

Prestwick booked for 24th June afternoon. Then remembered no more flights from Belfast to Prestwick!! Road trip for me boat to stranraer and 90 minute drive. At least I can do some last minute cramming on the ferry :)

Hi Batfink79, I am also booked for the Stage 1 on 15th April in Fareham (10am). I have booked a night in the Premier Inn Fareham (its 1.4 miles from the CTC so I reckon its walkable, weather permitting). AA Route Planner: Routes, maps and directions - The AA . Does anyone whose been there and done this have any feedback re. this (i.e. is it a bit dodgy crossing the motorway(not literally!)..??)

Anyway, it was £67 for the night and although I had to give my card details when I booked it, there is no charge until you check in on the day. Hope this helps you.

Cheers

Pinknails92 14th February 2011 22:53

Hey Nat :)

So how are you preparing for stage 1 ? :\

A plane at FL310 is instructed to descend to FL280, if the plane is descending at a rate of 1200 ft per minute, how long will the plane take to descend to FL280.

A) 2 minutes 20 seconds
B) 2 minutes 40 seconds
C) 3 minutes
D) None of the above.

As stupid as it must sound but I really have no idea how to figure these above questions :/ I have been giving it a thought with my basic knowledge of SDT but this is something I have never across before. Help?

Also , could anyone please tell me if we are allowed calculators ? ( I know we probably aren't , but i just wanted to make sure :) )

sambatc 15th February 2011 07:15

no calculators, but you have scrap paper which should be an immense help.

The question you refer to...A plane at FL310 is instructed to descend to FL280, if the plane is descending at a rate of 1200 ft per minute, how long will the plane take to descend to FL280.

So we're interested in a descent of FL310 --> FL280, which is 3000ft.

If the plane is descending at 1200ft per minute, we need to divide 3000 by 1200.

2 x 1200, or 2 minutes, is 2400, leaving 600. You should be able to see that this is half of 1200 :E , which will then be 30 seconds. So 3000/1200 = 2.5, or 2 mins 30 seconds.

Simples, see? There are a lot of questions where you will need maths like this, so get practicing!

tonycrfc1 15th February 2011 08:52

belfastboy

Ive booked my Stage 1 for Prestwick 24th June at 13:00

im only 30mins down the road from Glasgow though.

Any tips will be great for a stage 1er thanks

PhiltheReaper 15th February 2011 09:04

Honestly, for stage one, brush up on mental arithmatic at home, and then just chill out.

When you get the info pack learn it reasonably well, and then just make sure you are well rested for the day!

Phil

Crazy Voyager 15th February 2011 12:34

Wise words Phil :ok:

Someone asked about walking from the Premier inn to the CTC, I haven't tried it but I wouldn't recommend it.

It's not that far, but it's not intended for walking. If I remember correctly there are no sidewalks (pavement in the UK right? I have a faint memory of learning this in school but that is a while ago now:O). There might be a walking-path somewhere that I don't know off, but I would recommend to get a cab or try to get a ride with someone else (a fellow PPruner for example). If you have time to spare once you're done it might be worth trying to walk to see if it works but at least in the morning go by car. It also reduces the risk of getting there late and miss the test.

sambatc 15th February 2011 13:28

well, just received the dreaded email - I wasn't good enough to pass stage 3 this time.

I've asked for feedback and if it's useful I'll post it up on here... failing that, I'll be back in 8 months to apply again.

Good luck to everyone still in the running

Batfink79 15th February 2011 13:58

Sorry to hear your news sambatc :(

Well Done on getting to Stage 3 in the first place though, and good luck next year! :)

Cheers for the info Crazy Voyager! My sister has kindly booked it for me as an early birthday present! (I knew buying her a £170 sleeping bag would be good Karma! lol)

Sofia ATC 15th February 2011 18:18

I am sorry to hear that Sambac!

Anyway it is good you pass stage 1 and 2, you will be fine next time! well done!

tonycrfc1 16th February 2011 13:21
