ScATCC mil will be gone by end of the year when LATCC Mil takes over. Not sure on the civilian side.

Humour, which seems to be sadly lacking nowadays.

I read HD's comment as looking down on the guy...not an ex ATCO....what does he know about ATC ?

NATS these days seems to be populated by people who are deemed to be capable of running a BUSINESS.....ATC is a commodity to be "sold" globally to turn a PROFIT. There is NO requirement for them to be ex ATC or Engineering. The mantra is let's be safe......but let's have a return for our shareholders.

The NATS world has changed since HD retired....hell it probably has since I retired......and that was in July !!!!!!

I did too and hoped he may see that himself, hence my post. You're right, managers need to be good at managing and don't have to be able to do the coalface task.

I recall a new manager visiting LATCC, ex-business type. He looked at his watch at ten to five and said: "What time do you close".

Closure of SCATCC

Based upon my experience, I bet Heathrow Director was an awful lot better on his first day than the non-ATC experienced manager was on his.
&, for that matter, on countless further days !

Thank you friends. RYL... I guess you're not an aviation professional so I apologise for saying things which you do not understand.

I most certainly am an aviation professional. Would you like to point out what I have not understood?

Agree with kcockayne re manager & HD.

reportyourlevel

The "manager" who is supposedly in charge of a 24/7 operation has the stupidity to ask: "What time do you close?"

As a validated controller HD would be expected to be (your words) brilliant on his first day particularly at EGLL & EGTT otherwise he would have been terminated.
Alas, this is not a mandatory option for non operational managers!

Easternwiseguy. Patronising? Bollocks, me ole china.

Who said he was in charge of the operation, maybe he was in charge of marketing or HR or procurement? Would one of the watch managers know all the ins and outs of e.g. the legal department? Didn't think so. Also, let's not forget the "humour" that HD is so keen on - maybe it was a poorly received joke? Maybe also the sands of time have distorted the truth somewhat.

Tell me, how many controllers validate on their FIRST DAY? I know you NATS guys like to think you're good, but you're not that good! HD said the manager was "new", let's assume first week in the job. Not first week after six months of college and however much validation training, but first week off the street. Even if I was talking about valid controllers, I'd still disagree. Are you brilliant every day, or on some days are you just "good enough"?

eastern wiseguy, thanks. I'm afraid I don't fall into the "all hail HD" camp unlike many on here.

new manager visiting LATCC, ex-business type
One would assume that the 'manager' would some how be associated with the operational aspect otherwise why visit? This 'manager' sounds more like he came from MFI and we all know what happened to them.
In all my time there I never knew of, or heard of, a NATS corporate type ever visiting the facility. The Chairman and a few senior odd RAF bods used to wander in now and again but they were not so daft as to ask such a silly question! They knew what the operation entailed.
I did however work alongside HD and can say that he was and is 'Fit for purpose'.

Say no more, or not only will I become patronising but supercilious as well.

It is a well known fact that NATS chaps are the Crème de la crème.

To infinity and beyond and, hopefully, back in time for a pint of Guinness.

There're some assumptions being made. Just because someone doesn't ask a 'silly question' it doesn't mean they know all the answers!

As I see it, those that ask the silly questions are usually pretty good at spotting the 'emperors new clothes' when they see them and aren't afraid to speak up. I personally prefer management/colleagues/trainees who ask questions, however daft, rather than keep their mouths shut and google it later!

(Excuse me if I've missed the point but these days some of the 'humour' on this forum goes right over my head!)

fisbangwallop - correct. A colleague of mine says "the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask".

Say no more, or not only will I become patronising but supercilious as well.

Too late!
