Hi all,

I've got some questions regarding the emirates hierarchy for cabin crews and it's equivalent issues...

- What exactly is the hierarchy of promotion and what are the average salaries (including allowance if you have the figures) like?

- How long does it take to rise up the ranks and is it dependent on performance or is it based purely on number of years of experience?

- Does everyone start at the same base level or can one be promoted directly to a higher rank based on other factors?

- What is the premium cabin? (i came across this while browsing through the forum)

Thank you so much, you kind souls out there!! :)

Anyone is going to open days in Cracow?

Mari
4th Jul 2010, 21:33
1. Hierarchy
Economy class crew > Business Class crew > First class crew > Senior Flight Steward > Purser (> Senior Flight Purser > Cabin Crew Manager)
Salaries: emirates vs etihad vs qatar topic
Flying pay is 53.50 dhs for new crew, 87 dhs per hour for pursers right now. The basic salary goes up with the years and your grade.

2. You can become SFS in 3-4 years, Purser in 6-7 years. Experience, attendance and performance is considered.

3. Everyone starts at the same level. Probation is 6 months. No quick upgrades for people with previous flying experience. No direct entry Pursers!

4. Premium cabin: Business Class and First Class.

Hi, does anyone have a phone number to contact HR in Dubai? I had my FI seven weeks ago and still haven't heard back and would really like to check on it.

Your help is appreciated. Congrats to those who already got the GC.

Hello, igawoj

Planning to attend EK OD in Cracow on 31st July too. It'd be nice to meet you.:ok: How many people do you think will be attended? Have you ever tried to apply or will it be the first time for you? Congratulations to your new president Mr Komorowski. :D

Hi Fly Away

I think it depends on how far your friend got in the last OD. I think (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong) that the 6months/1year waiting thing only applies if she did a final interview. I know that this is the rule for other middle eastern airlines but I'm not entirely sure about EK.

I think they are quite strict on reapplying before the waiting period, they may hold a record of your cv etc and so will recognise you from this.

I'm sorry it's not a more definite answer, maybe somebody can verify this?

Is it typical to wait longer than 6 weeks after the FI?? I'm approaching 6 weeks and still haven't heard anything...

YELLYBABY
7th Jul 2010, 08:24
Yes it is possible, I have been waiting 8 weeks and they called me on Sunday to send photos with more make-up. So I suggest wait till the 6 weeks have past and if you still have'nt heard anyting I have a contact number and email you can use to get a answer quicker.
p.s what does your status say on the EK careers page?

I attended a assement day in January this year and fell out in the last round, I re-applied online in April and attended another assement day in May, and got the the FI stage, so I'm not sure that the 6 month waiting period is so strict. I think if they recognise you, it might be a problem, but it's unlikely they will. If you make it to the FI and you are then unsuccesful you have to wait a year, and I do not think you will be able to take a chance with that as they then have your information 'on file' from your FI.

CD9
7th Jul 2010, 08:53
Thanks for the response! I just checked my status: "Advert closed". I actually didn't complete all my details online and rather chose to "walk in" at the OD. So I'm guessing that's why it says nothing about my progress. Out of curiousity, what does your status say?

Mari
7th Jul 2010, 10:46
I was under the impression that you have to complete everything on the online application form as they won't be able to move on with your file if it's not 100% complete. I thought everyone has to fill up the online application form, even if you attended an Open Day. Yes, it's walk-in but my friend had to fill up the online form in the hotel before the Final Interview. Later on you need to download the medical forms and do some online courses (pre-studies) before travelling to Dubai, I guess.

I have no idea what "advert closed" really means, I can't recall this message from any of the ppruners. Although, feel free to read back in this topic: people regularly posted their status.

Flying Away,

everything I know about the recruitment process, I know from pprune. (I was hired many years ago. It was different.) Your friend should go for this OD but she has to fill up a paper where she's asked if she attended any OD before. So, in this case, she should answer with "No". Maybe they don't keep records about all the applicants but only about those who made it to the Final Interview once.

I'm sorry but I don't know for sure. The recruiters are not able to check it right there but the HR can find out anything if they have information about your friend in the system. One of my friends was invited for an AD but she did not attend. Her status turned "not attended" later on, so it was checked and documented. There are ODs with thousands of applicants. I doubt that Emirates has the capacity to put all the records to the system, though...

Anyways, I cannot confirm anything.

YELLYBABY

I have read about people (on this forum) who did not apply online and just simply attended the OD. The online application is merely a means to a end to recieve a invite to a AD.

You in addition do not need a online profile to go through the process, because at the OD, or if you attend the AD univited you must provide photographs and a CV. That is why you do not have to give them a CV and photos at the AD, because they already have it printed out, hence the stacks of paper surrounding the RO's.

If you get the FI you fill out the info they need to process your application, and you are required to give them more photos that they need for your file in Dubai.

As I understand the candidate portal and the careers page is not the same thing (website)? Maybe someone can advise on that?

The 'advert closed' simply means that the position they advertised on the EK website is closed and they are taking no more applications for those positions. If you did apply online, it would have changed to 'application under review' or 'applied'.As you will notice the positions for UAE citizens who have to be fluent in Arabic, is open, as they do not have a set time frame because you can drop off your CV at EK offices whenever.

My status changed to 'approval in progress' 2 weeks after my FI.

Keep me updated on your progress!

I just remembered we had to state before the final interview if we have ever been interviewed by EK and when, on the documents we had to fill in, with our signature stating that the information given is truthful and if found that it is incorrect it can lead to disqualification.

BigAl,

do you want career advice here?!

Obviously, it would be totally irresponsible of you if you didn't go for the job interview as you don't have positive answer from Emirates yet. First of all it's not a job opportunity, it's just a job interview. Why would you tell about EK at your interview??? Are you Saint BigAl who is protecting the bloodsucker employers?! (They don't care about you, why would you care about them?!) Of course you won't say anything about Emirates but take the job if you get it. As you will be on probation for 3-6 months, you can leave without any explanation during this period of time. You can obviously try to ask Emirates about your result, as well if you have phone and internet.

Hi evreyone! Can anybody tell me what kind of medicals you have to do for emirates? Because I need to know exactly if I will take the medicals or not if I arrive at the final interview.... Thank you very much and I hope some one will be kind to answer me:(:ooh:

Mari
9th Jul 2010, 08:20
Anna,

If you are successful, you will get all the forms from Emirates.

I read your post about the spine operation. I remember that we have to fill up all kind of papers in Dubai and they ask about these things. There is a general doctor who examines you as well. Your situation is not easy: I'm not sure they want to take the risk with this kind of "problem" but Emirates is not as strict with the medicals as Qatar. They might send you to a specialist, I guess, to confirm that you are fit to fly. This might affect your isurance coverage, as well.

You should pm to ppruners who are already in Dubai and recently passed the medicals there. There might have been similar cases. (Read back. Lots of people posted their date of joining.) They should know more. The info below is very old, ask them about the required medicals or read back: the list was posted a couple of times already.

I hope you are fine and healthy and you will be able to pass without difficulties. Good luck!

Height and Weight
Your doctor should weigh and measure to ensure that you fall within the minimum and maximum height and weight restrictions.

HIV/AIDS Test
This is checked again by the local authorities on entry in Dubai and under no circumstances will they issue resident visas to applicants who test positive to HIV.

Chest X-RAY
X-ray films with the date and patient name on them AND a radiologist’s report in English are required.

Haemoglobin
Anaemia can lead to difficulty working at cabin altitudes. A haemoglobin of less than 10gms/dL is unacceptable.

Audiogram
An audiogram must be provided to cover the 500-3000Hz range. If you do not meet the standards, you must provide a report stating you have passed one of the acceptable alternative tests.

Pap or Cervical Smear Test – FEMALES ONLY
Report of cervical smear taken within the past 3 years is required if you have ever been sexually active. Evidence of having undergone the test such as a doctor’s letter is acceptable until a report can be obtained. You may choose not to undergo this test on the proviso that Emirates will not cover you for any related problems in the future.
The PAP test is NOT required if you have are a virgin.

Ophthalmic Report
You should complete this form ONLY if you need corrective lenses to meet vision standards or have undergone LASIK or PRK eye surgery.

VACCINATIONS
Vaccination Certificate: This should be completed by your family doctor. If these vaccinations are incomplete, the cost of having these vaccinations when you join the company will be deducted from your salary.

DENTAL
Note the requirement for dental X-RAYS. Certificate of Dental Health: This should be completed by your dentist.

Al Qusais / Obaidulla Buildings

There are 6 buildings situated on the same street together called obaidulla. I can say apartments are quite new and they re big. 2 bedroom apartmens. You`ve a market called Spinney`s just at the entrance of your building but it`s quite expensive compared to Carrefour in the city centre.
Building is good or bad ? That question really depends. Obaidulla buildings are quite far to the city. If you want to go to headquarters by cabin crew bus..it takes you 30 minutes. If you want to go Jumeirah area takes you 40-45 minutes at least by taxi and will cost you about 25 dollars just to go there.. But i can say around the building its quite green with the grass and trees.. better than Al Nahda area buildings.
But if you say you party a lot and you ll go to city too much it`ll cost you much by taxi if you use it often..but on the other hand if you want to move to a building in city centre (i can say even you live in city centre you still have to take a taxi to go everywhere/ theres a metro built but that metro has camel speed :) ) . And you may end up sharing your bathroom and toilet with someone else and also consider you might have an old building..ups and downs...i live in obaidulla 1...

Dear Mari and everybody for sharing your knowledge and experiences, it is very helpful to us hopefuls!

I'm from Mexico and an Aviation School does the prescreening for the asessment days, I was succesful at the prescreening back in 2008 but I was a bit overweight and was told to lose it and advise when I was ready for the OD with the Emirates Recruiting crew. Due to economic crisis and everything, there were no OD's until march this year. I've lost weight and I am readdy to apply, I have worked for two major airlines in america and majored in hospitality and tourism. Hopefully my background and work experience will help me to succeed in the recruiting process, I will try the OD's in Mexico City in August 26 and 27.

Do you know if there are cabin crew from mexico flying?

I know have asked this zillion times!!! but I get confuseddd, I have two nautical stars tattooed on my chubs (sides of lower back) they will obviously never show, just wanna confirm, I shouldn´t mention I have them right?

anyway thank you guys for any guidance you can provide, if there is anyone from mexico applying hit me up.

thank you guys!!

Hi everyone,

is it allowed for crew to leave Dubai in first 6 month? If I have studies home and wanna take my exams, may I leave UAE just for couple of days? Know it's 30 days free annual but what about policy during probation period? :hmm:

Mari
10th Jul 2010, 13:36
Wakeboard,

I'm not exactly sure what the rules are but they will let you know during training, I guess.

What I know: my flatmate went home twice during probation. (With id tickets. And she didn't ask her manager.) In her case, she did not get leave during probation. She started in December when we were really very short of people. So, she has 32 leave days for the second half of 2010. She's in the 380 fleet, so normally she gets 4 off days in a row, at least once in a roster. (If you could swap you could win 1-2 extra off days in addition. Unfortunately, swapping is not allowed during probation.)

Your case might be different and you might get leave even during your probation. I don't know how tight the Main Fleet rosters for G2s nowadays but you might also have 3-4 days off in a row. (And might not... Depends on your luck!) There is no guarantee to get the leave you wanted! I asked for Feb, I got May. I asked for September, I got October.

You can always try to talk to your manager when it's something important but they are usually not very supportive... One girl got leave during probation which was taken away later. She needed the leave for her wedding... They don't care. You might be lucky and if you really fight for it, you might get what you want.

Hello,

I attended an open day in the US last month and was eliminated after the group discussion.
However, I received an email from Emirates just a few days ago inviting me to open days that will be held in the US this month.

So I was wondering if it is okay to attend the upcoming open day.
I heard from someone that you need to wait at least 6 months to reapply.
I'm assuming Emirates didn't have the time to update my account to input the record of my attendance last month because my online application still says "under review" when I have been eliminated :(

Would someone please clarify?

hi there,

Fascinated by everyone`s experiences of all the way to become a cabin crew.I can I am one of you guys.

I got few questions in mind at the moment, hope could get some ideas from you since I noticed you are from Toronto? so also went through all the stages in Toronto as well?

It is really a pain for me to struggle between going for the open day in Canada or my home country. The two ODs will be 10 days apart. I tend to assume that I would stand better chance if i go back home? Does local advantage apply to EK recruiting, what do you think?

Even if I stay in Canada, I have to attend OD in one of the cities here, I have to travel either to Toronto or Montreal for AD if i`ll get selected from the OD.So,,,really difficult....and I know big cities like Toronto, the number of people going there for this, must be overwhelming....

Sorry to bother you. Wish you all the best

I think it will be better for you to choose to go to attend an OD at the city you think that there aint many talents ie if EK were going to have an open day in Sydney and Hobart and my hometown is Sydney I would choose to go and attend an OD in Hobart instead..do you see my point?Because it is an open day its time for you to shine as much as you could who cares where you live or from as long as you can prove that you will be an exceptional employee provided that you fits all requirements ie fit to fly (medical wise) as well as you are married (if you have kids) my friend's application got declined after all the interviews and medical check ups they discovered that she's not married but she got kids... thats against their culture

From what ive read, i think the canadian ODs are run a bit differently? They're not usually done over 3 consecutive days and seem to work a bit more like the first day is done by an agency, then the assessment day is about a week or two later by Emirates and the FI can be anything up to a month after that? At least I've read that from 2 or 3 different people so i'm assuming they're all like that in Canada. So for the sake of ease, I'd probably go to your home country!

Hi CC,

I found this post on cabincrew.com (April 2010) about an Open Day in Toronto:

Hi Everyone!
I just got back from the open day which was held today in Toronto Downtown.

I was wearing a blazer with skirt, heels and skin colour stockings, had my hair in a bun... It was surprising to see some people in jeans:S:S

Everyone got greeted by the 3 wonderful people from the Konexion Management Consulting team.

I got there super early at 815AM and was surprised that 10 people were already in the waiting area filling out their forms:-)

While filing out my form(form was just basic questions name/address/personal info and 2 questions based on situations), many more people started to enter...

After filling out our forms, we are asked to do the reach test.
Ladies had to remove heels and men were allowed to keep their shoes on. Unfortunately, I saw two-three girls being sent home:( and 2 people were sent home/ they were pretty upset because they weren't 21.

Please remember you can go for an open day if you will turn 21 in three months time:) So anyway, this one person was really upset about it and refused to leave, but I guess he finally left..

I waited for about 20more minutes and then finally had my one on one with a man called RICK... I believe, he was very very sweet and so polite. I felt so comfortable, we pretty much just talked and he asked me 2-3 questions.. and thats it guys !!! 5 minutes interview and I was on my way home:)

now just have to wait until next week Friday for an email - if I made it or didn't...for the next round of interviews:)

(no more info from her)

I will try my luck once more in Canada, or in specific, Toronto.

The day I was in Toronto for Qatar Airways` OD is still fresh like yesterday. Had no idea what did they base on to select the candidates.
1st, the time for beginning was delayed, supposed to start @ 9:00p.m, the person most likely from Qatar was unable to show up, so only two gals conducted the OD and answered questions.

2nd, I was wearing very professionally while being there, compared with others who weren`t. and I was confident, friendly and having pleasant interactions with others.

Had no idea, what were they really looking into. Pretty much shocked by the company`s requirements for its staff. Like in the military:hmm:. I agree some of the fellows discussed this on the forum.

I would like to know the same. I have read previous posts, and I find a lot of people asking, but not many answers (then again I'm not good with previous posts). So does anybody know if it's a sure thing if you have 'approval in progress'. Has anybody had that message and recieved a rejection mail?

All answers and speculation welcome!

I don't think it necessarily means you will get the call. What I believe it means is that you are a step closer to getting your phone call! I am saying this because I know 2 people who's status has changed to this but are still waiting for the call. You should start getting excited when you status changes to 'you will be contacted by recruitment coordinator at the earliest"
All the best!

hey, the same thing happened to me in regards to being locked out of my profile. I have been locked out for about 1 week now. I was at the Sydney interviews which were the weekend before the Auckland ones. I already know through this forum someone whose gotten an approval in progress status who was in FI interview group and hasn't been locked out of their profile so I don't really know why this happens or even if it means anything...

Does anyone have the number to the HR department? ( a recently used number) I searched the forum for numbers and I've tried two numbers and they both just ring out. Any help would be appreciated :)

When sending more casual photos make sure, it's really really flattering ones with lots of make-up, like your prom night. And make sure to send a full lenght casual one. Send 10 really awesome photos, so they have a bigger choice, if you can.If your photos do not meet 'the requirements' you might have a 'approval in progress' status like me for 9 weeks!!!

Is anyone attending the OD here in San Fran? Also very very curious as to what could be the major criteria for a cut-off at OD? It seems like a lot of people are there but at the end reduced to less than 50%; how can a person try to get past this? :)

It is my understanding that on previous US recruitment events almost half were cut after the first morning session. Most due to age...in the US there are a lot of former flight attendants that are in their 40's, 50's and 60's that still want to fly. And, in the US this is not an issue. For EK it is.

Also, dress appropriately...skirt suit (female), hair up in a bun...no open toe shoes...nice conservative closed heel and toe shoes in black or navy to match your suit. Limited conservative jewelry.

Another US point is "weight in proportion to height" in the US you are not allowed to discriminate based on weight....someone can be 5"3 and weigh 165 and still get hired. With EK this is not going to happen.

My friend who went through the process in Miami and is waiting for her date, she said all the women who got called back were a size 8 or smaller. (US size).

The US is different than other countries...but don't expect EK to be required to follow US recruitment standards.

This seemed to be a sticking point for people attending in the US.

For guys, wear a suit and tie, get your hair cut..no hair products. Shine your shoes.... Same deal with height and weight... I have a male friend who will be at the SFO OD.

Hello,

I attended an open day in Houston, US on 6/26/2010 and was eliminated after the group discussion.
However, I received an email from Emirates just a few days ago inviting me to open days in Seattle7/10 or San Francisco 7/17/2010.

So I was wondering if it is okay to attend the upcoming open day since Emirates sent me an invite via email.
I heard from someone that you need to wait at least 6 months to reapply but why do you think ek sent me this invite again?
Do you think it's because Emirates didn't have the time to update my account to input the record of my attendance last month???

My online application still says "under review" when I have been eliminated http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/sowee.gif

Would someone please clarify?

EkAdelaide
14th Jul 2010, 16:48
Personally, I would wait six months before re-applying. I think the email you received is system-generated so everyone who applied in the US would get it. The system is not smart enough to know who has applied in the last six months. If you make it further this time, they may find you applied only last month because they would have your resume and photograph from the previous OD on file. This could be grounds for automatic disqualification and could affect your applications in the future.

Having said this, I know of people who made it through without waiting six months, but you need to decide if it's a risk worth taking. Emirates is very strict with its rules and I would imagine they have no tolerance for people who are dishonest. If you're successful, you will be required to sign a declaration stating everything you've disclosed is true and accurate so this is a good test of your honesty.

Dear Usmankh,

thanks for the nice words.

The post above about the "US recruitment" tells the facts. (By the way, I'm a size 6, tall female and I feel like a big cow next to the little Asians... Is it just me or the new-joiners getting younger and younger and thinner and thinner?!)

The first cut:

The good cv and the good first impression is essential.

The crew who I met from your country: surprisingly open minded, cheerful, flexible, smart, confident, easy-going AND professional. Very easy to work with and talk to. (For me. I never had communication problems with Americans or Canadians but I do have with British and Australians.) I met some experienced American crew (United, SouthWest Airlines), so the cabin crew background is an advantage. They are all young and good looking. If you are bilingual or speak another language fluently: great advantage. If you traveled a lot and/or lived abroad (studies, work): great advantage. Boys need to have hair on the head: they don't hire bold guys. (Note: the bold men you see were not bold when they got hired.) The good cv: 2-5 years of customer service experience is ideal. College degree might be a plus (due to the level of education in the US). Your cv should be straight to the point: no need to write many pages. (There is no time to read a roman.) Highlight the significant information. They will not read the rest. Well, and you need a good photo.

I don't have more tips or more experience to share. The rest depends on your luck. You must understand that your luck depends on who else is attending this open day. As I look back it was very easy for me to get in because the other candidates were just sooo weak. The competition is huge nowadays.

All the best!

Dear dv8,

you should tell your friend about pprune and she can read everything and ask anything she wants.

First, she should start with the Emirates career page: you don't need to speak Arabic, only English. She should read the "Requirements" section.

Yes, you can bid for flights like the pilots. (Emirates has the best Cabin Crew Portal I've ever seen. It's fantastic!) There are 7 bidding groups and you are in one of the groups in each month. When you are "top bid", you have the biggest chance to get what you want. (Days off and flights.) If you bid for New York, you might get 2 in that month. When you are lowest bid, you have Reserve which is a whole month at Emirates. (There are no standby duties in the "normal" rosters.) You can also swap flights for other flights or days off. (Note: rosters are extremely tight nowadays, you work up to the limit. It's hard to make big changes due to legality issues.) Do not count on the bidding system if your friend plans to go home regularly. (Except if she's from London: we have hundreds of flights to London every day. I'm more than happy to give mine for a CDG or BKK.) Anyways, there are 2 fleets: the Main Fleet (777, A330, A340 - many destinations) and the A380 fleet (limited number of destinations). You cannot choose between the fleets: the company decides which aircraft type you will be trained on. And you stuck with it for a while...

What does the "standard way of living" mean to your friend?! You don't pay rent, utilities, transportation to and from work. They feed you on the flight, they feed you on the layovers. You can spend your salary on parties, dinners in restaurants, travelling, spa, manicur/pedicur, hairdresser, yoga, clothes, shoes, iphone, laptop etc. AND pay off your loan or pay for your studies. Health insurance is quite good. You can purely live on your Meal Allowances you get on the layovers (in cash), actually. If your friend is from a poor Asian country, she will be able to save 50-90% of her salary. If your friend is from Eastern-Europe, she will be able to save 40-70% of her salary easily. If your friend is from the UK or South-Africa for example, she will be able to save 0-40% of her salary and complaining about the money non-stop. If having a car is part of the "standard" to your friend, then yes, you can allow to have a car in Dubai, cars and gas is very cheap.

The money is not the issue here: your friend has to leave her friends and family. She will be able to go home only 3-4 times a year for short period of time and fight for the seats on the way back. (All flights are full all the time! Especially Australian flights.) She has to live in a muslim country. (If she's muslim it's not an issue of course.) The climate is not always pleasant: it's extremely hot from May till October. (Forget about winter and rain! Except the flooding in January when all the cars and houses are under water...) The work is hard and exhausting: very demanding customers, multicultural crew, very tight rosters with long- and short-haul flights, minimum days off.

Your friend needs to be young, fit and open minded to even think about joining Emirates. Your friend can also google lots of stuff and find some blogs written by Emriates crew (main fleet and 380) and watch some youtube videos (search: "emirates cabin crew graduation"), so she can see what the expectations about the age and look are.

Good luck to your friend to her future plans!

Hmm.. Mari, could be that they are not able to follow simple instructions? Or they could be dyslexic or not have the requisite level of English? Text speak is so pervasive nowadays that they might not even know how to properly spell, which is not being emphasised enough at school. I guess it's easy sometimes for native English language speakers to take for granted the utility of knowing English, while those who learnt is as a second language often struggle through the complexities and nuances of the hodge-podge that is Lingua Anglica.

Love your posts by the way, you're a wealth of information and you are very encouraging. Would love to meet you when I finally land in Dubai!

I'm gearing up to attend the SFO OD now. Mari, it's my pleasure -- I sincerely meant what I said :)

Fortunately, I'm bilingual and have spent at least 5 years of my life involved in some sort of customer service related job :) (this is not to say that the EK would be impressed, but we can only sincerely try and try:)) Any idea where I can fit my travel experiences in my CV (I had a good fortune of traveling a lot and live abroad as my dad was in an Airline industry). Wondering if it's worth noting on the CV. In terms of pictures (attached to the CV?), the full-length turned out to be good, but the passport size just okay (can't have a good pp snap for some reason:)). The rest is fate :)

Sincere thanks... (a dream in the making)

In the USA keep your resume (CV) to one page only. Under personal in your resume you can state that you are "well traveled having lived/visited XX countries".

don't mention your dad worked for XYZ Airlines, they probbly don't care.

Put only the really important customer service items in a US resume. If you want to do a CV, do online searching. Standards/information on a CV is very different from a US resume.

So I got my Golden Call a couple of weeks back and said I'd keep the forum posted with news on my colour blindness issues.

During my GC I told the lady I am colour blind and asked if this would be a problem; she told me it's up to the clinic, and we agreed that I'd see my optician for details then post the information on to the portal.

When I was 13 I was told I'm red/green colour blind by opticians who visited my school for a routine test. I hadn't been tested since, until I went to the optician a couple of weeks back, and was told that I'm actually a Tritanope - blue/yellow colour blindness. So I posted this to the queries on the portal straight away, and finally got my answer today.

Tritanopia is absolutely fine and I'm to go ahead with the medicals.

So I guess I will post again from Dubai (presuming I pass the medicals) when I've seen the optician there.

Hope this is useful information for someone at some point :-)

AL FALTAT

It's quite a new building - opened up last September, owned by Emirates - but it just doesn't look nice and modern. It's pink in colour. (Why?!) It has 7 floors. Mixed building: crew (male and female), pilots, engineering, families: it has 2-3-4-bedroom-apartments. You can open the windows. There should be a balcony but not always.

It has a nice, quite big swimming pool. Two little gyms: one for the boys, one for the girls.

Look for Burjuman Mall on the google map: the building is 3-4 minutes walk from there. There is a metro station near. There is a big Spinney's supermarket just 2 minutes walk from the building. Dubai downtown is close. Jumeira beach is quite close as well, maybe 15 minutes by taxi. The area is not very "posh" and it's very busy but the location is excellent. It takes around 25 minutes to get to work with the crew bus and maybe 20 minutes to get home. (It would only take 15 minutes - 25 dhs - by taxi. The crew bus stopes at other buildings, as well.)

The quality of the building is poor, the finishing work in the kitchens and bathrooms is just horrible. Some of the bathrooms have disgusting colours. (Why?!) Some bathrooms are so small that you can hardly open the door. Some bathrooms are so huge that you have no idea what to put there. No storages in the bathrooms at all which is just annoying. There is a hole for the dishwasher in the kitchen. Some kitchens are very tiny but I like the colours of the furniture, though.

I think crew stay in 2-bedrooms, so you should have only one flatmate. Some of the rooms have really funny shapes, some are tiny, some are huge. If you're lucky, you get a normal one. You will have your own bathroom. The furniture is the "new" Emirates furniture with big, brown sofas and huge dining table. The living rooms are spaceous. You will have a queen size bed, a table, chair, mirror, night table and built-in wardrobes. (You should have enough space in these wardrobes.)

You might have an extra storage room in the flat as well.

Okay you need to calm down, you had your interview only on the 27th they said give them 4-6 weeks! I'm locked out of my candidate profile too so in my case I've just been keeping track from my batch whether rejection letters, golden calls or grooming forms have been sent out.

Someone from the NZ batch has already got the rejection letter which means if you haven't got one you've probably made it pass the final interview now your file is being processed. The best you can do is check your email everyday and hope for the best. You haven't got that "recruitment officer will contact you" because they haven't made their decision. The sydney OD was the weekend before yours so if you hear anything it's probably going to be after we do, even though I know that a different recruitment officer handles your file in Dubai.

Wait for another week or so, I mentioned that I asked my recruitment officer abt portal lockout and he said he didn't know why, but if you have to hear it from them or speak to someone just ring them get it over and done with. Some people on this forum have waited 7-9weeks for the GC.

It pays to wait :)

@pokes: Do you think it sounded bad the description of the building?? I don't think so, it could be worse. Some people are in the middle of nowhere. And I've seen some pictures of this new kind of living room and it looks really nice :ok:
There's a girl from Uruguay also joining on the 19th, that has got this building!! She's coming on my flight, that arrives on the 20th at 23:00 local time.

Hi
You can think that im dumb but what is the text speak?
I'm new to this thingy too hehe:E

ekfingerscrossed
17th Jul 2010, 01:32
Text speak (or txtese, chatspeak, txt, txtspk, txtk, txto, texting language, or txt talk) is a term for the abbreviations and slang most commonly used due to the necessary brevity of mobile phone text messaging, in particular the widespread SMS (short message standard) communication protocol. (Source: Wikipedia)

An xmple of txtspk abbrevi8s 'you' to 'u' n 'your'/'you're' to 'ur'. ROFLOL

Due to the lack of proper spelling and sometimes proper grammar and punctuation, text speak makes the speaker's point quite ambiguous sometimes and you get rambling paragraphs. Not a pleasant read!

It's the first thread in the forum:

For what it's worth, this Monday it will be 10 weeks since my FI, my status has been 'approval in progress' for 8 weeks. I have sent in photos 4 times!I know the RO's on first name basis, I even received a call from a South African RO last week and she spoke Afrikaans to me to explain exactly what they are looking for with regards to the photo's. Because I'm obviously getting it wrong...

What I'm trying to say, and this is my opinion, and only that, it was in no way communicated to me by EK RO's, is that if your status has changed to 'approval in progress', it means they like you and want you to be successful, thus you had a good interview. But it does not merely depend on who interviewed you, when they have completed your file, it gets sent to their seniors for approval.

As the RO officer said to me in Afrikaans (translation); "You look like two different people on your casual and professional photo, I do not want to send your file to management for approval and then it gets turned down.I apologize for this, but they are very specific about what they want."

Even though I have been waiting for what seems like forever, I feel its better to wait, let them do their job and you get in. Another 3 or 4 weeks of waiting, in terms of the rest of your life WILL NOT KILL YOU.Rather take the time to consider a plan B, go on with your life, the sun does not rise and set at EK.

So for all those waiting good luck and keep us updated!

hi everyone! this is my first time posting at this thread. i find this thread very helpful and intresting. i have been reading this thread for few days and im lovin' it, especially mari who's been putting so much effort in helping others.

anyway, im going to the open day at china this coming august 1 and im so nervous and confuse whether to go or not cause it'll cost me heaps of money. i am currently here at hong kong as a domestic helper, taking care of a 6 month old baby. i'm from the philippines and im getting a visa tomorrow for china. i have to pay few $ to the agency plus all my expenses. i only earn a little money but im still going to try applying for EK. i was just wondering if any of the ppruners tried measuring theirselves at home cause i tried mearing myself on tip toes and i could only reach 210 cm using a metre stick, i dont know if thats accurate though...any tips on how i could reach higher? lol.. im still gonna try my luck.. i only have money to loose but so much to gain if i get the job!

@ mari: i was just wondering if i would have good enough background cause i studied in australia for grade school, volunteer for international social service wherein we help ethnic minorities, domestic helper, caregiver wherein i had OJT within the hospital taking care of pediatrics, geriatrics, icu patients and people with disabilty, cantonese training, took up nursing for college and knowledge and skills on first aid? do you think that would be okay? id love to hear an opinion from someone who's been a cc for ages and helping others who's been aspiring cc. thanks

Hi, guys...
Its my first time posting here... this thread has been really useful for me

Well, I went to an open day, was selected, did all the medicals, got the final approval, resigned my old job...
Was fine, everything ok with no problem at all...

It happens that one week before my DOJ my gums decided to retract... o_O
I didn't go to the dentist yet, I'm going as soon as possible, as today is still saturday... And it's not visible, it's in the back of the bottom front teeth) but it definitely doesn't fit in their 'high periodontal health' standards.

What I would like to know is if anyone has or know someone who has had the same problem: a compromising issue AFTER the approval, something if you had before wouldn't help you to get approved.

I'm afraid of don't say anything to them and it become a big problem once I get to Dubai.

I would like to know from the more experienced (than me) what I should do. Should I contact them, just few days before my DOF with a new dental report?

Welcome in the club, although my DOJ is in two weeks, my artificial front tooth which I broke when I was 8 began to crack (after over 15 years of silence) but fortunately on Monday I hope it'll look as perfect as it did before. And I won't look like :} :)

So noo worries, fix it asap and enjoy:)

I still cant believe that I got rejected by Emirates.
I just got the email tonight. I am so disappointed and of course sad. I didn't know what went wrong during the final interview. I thought everything was so great.

The other guy got rejected too. We were asking the same question. What we did wrong. Did I say something wrong or the recruiters just didn't like us?

For people who passed the FI, could you share your experience on how you made it. Or...

Could anyone give me a possible explanation why we both failed this final interview? (could it be the IQ/EQ test?)

We both had made this far...and now it's like a bomb.

Do you think it's worth trying again next year?

We were in Seattle for Final interview last Sunday.

I am sorry to hear about your rejection!
Its hard to say, possibly its everything altogether, could be your personality test (employer uses those results to rank all the candidates) or something?!?
Do not take it personal sometime its not you its just that they are very particular on what they are after AT THAT STAGE.
Please try again next time my friend got rejected 5 times and now she is working over there with them...(rejected after the FI)

I'm still waiting for an answer myself and hopefully it won't be a rejection email ;):O

I attended the OD in San Francisco. May be 100 people showed up. Everything was good...we were shown a video presentation etc. and then divided into groups. Later we all took the English test. I think I absolutely did fine in the English test. After that we were told to wait and told that some of us would be eliminated.

Unfortunately I was one of those whom they eliminated. So heart broken, but life goes on... Just wondering...what could it be...everything seemed to go well. I thought I was well-prepared.

Did anyone else have similar experiences? I'm sure people make it in their 2nd or 3rd attempt...

Good luck to one and all :)

Thank you Nathan. That makes me feel a lot better :)
The R.O. kept telling people that don't take the rejection personally. They just want some specific outcomes from good candidates.

I guess my friends and I didn't actually show what they want during the final interview or the IQ/EQ test.

but still, in Seattle only 6 people got the final interview...and 3 got rejected. (3 guys!!!)I was one of them) for ladies, I have no clue.

By the way...the IQ/EQ test was quite long....187 questions....they are not tricky ....they are just hard to answer....

Good Luck , Nathan. Hope you get your Golden Call soon :)

Dear Usmankh,

Sorry to hear that you got eliminated at the first stage.

When I was in Seattle OD last week, only 28 people showed up during the OD

We had the same process in OD. First the video and then....the reach test.
Then...we had to introduce our new friend on the right hand side to the group.
At that time, they started to take notes.

Then...English Test...which was super easy...

then...elimination....!!!

After that, second stage....Group discussion....

then....second elimination!!!

I was the one who made it to the final interview stage...along with other five people. (3 ladies and 3 guys)

after the interview...one week later, 3 guys (including me) got the rejection email!!?!?

It feels like taking the roller-coaster from heaven to hell :(

You are lucky because you can try after 6 months. For us....one year :(

G'day, I got my golden call the next day after my status changed to 'you will be contacted...'.

Your doctor will probably request for a Full Blood Count for your haematology, that will include Haemoglobin, Hct, RBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, RDW, Platelets, White Cells (the 5 different types). Other blood work include Hep B & C, HIV and Syphillis. Haemoglobins transport oxygen and is a protein that contains iron. So short answer is yes, they will check for your iron levels as you cannot be anaemic. The minimum value for Hgb is 10gms/dL.

tfran
19th Jul 2010, 07:55
Cool! Thanks for that. My serum iron is quite low, but the doctor tells me my Haemoglobin is at a good level. Hmm mines been a few days now, hopefully the call will come soon - it is quite a stressful process I must say!!

ekfingerscrossed
19th Jul 2010, 07:59
I can commiserate - I've been on tenterhooks for the past two months!

Tests in NZ must be more comprehensive than here in Australia - to avoid complications don't give them more than what they ask for! I know that in certain places you can just ask for a Haemoglobin test to be done, so if you have lower than usual platelets, since it's not a 'testable' item, it won't factor into your meds.

Good luck!

Hey Fly_01
My final interview was in Auckland New Zealand, on the 26/06/2010 and I had my panel on the 27/06/2010.
121 showed up and 28 people got through...
I heard from tfran (she is on here) that 2 people has received their rejection email...
It has been almost 3 weeks and even added to my stress that the fact I am unable to to log into my account to check on my status and I did not even seen a message 'you wil be contacted soon blah blah" So yeah,....so lets hope that i got through because im guessing that if they want to reject me i probably would already have received my rejection emails like the others (im guessing)no offence to people who just been rejection this is just a conversation sorry in advance ;)
:ok:

To people who are going to an AD

1.First of all, Work on your CV keep it brief but detailed.(would you want to read 10 pages of CV and hundreds of them? NO so be creative but still stay on a professional side) probably keep it under 3 pages straight forward.

2. Your professional photos, smile with teeth they want to see your personality, in a business attire, full length head to toe.

3. When you get there, relax and observe, don't need to over dressed or too much make up and perfume/cologne.Be tidy if you're a girl, either put your hair in a bun or french roll (would be better) and no jeans, mini skirt, skin color stocking. If for a guy dress in a fitted suit but not tight (lol)

4.Be positive because it shows on your facial expression, don't be judgmental of other people because that day is all about you, not others..

5. Engaging yourself, your opinion, smile, bring that bubbly personality but don't over do it, be real not fake.

6. Don't try to be the boss if someone wants to take control, let them be, but don't just sit there and say nothing, would you recruit someone quiet/no personality to be in your company ? probably not huh..

7. And lastly please don't be upset if you don't get through, it may be because you are not what they want at that stage of the recruitment, or you don't have the right personality please be realistic here :)

But I guess you gotta try you never know ;D Good luck though I hope this help you a bit I been through what you are going through and at the moment i am waiting for an answer myself .:O

Hi Versace ;-)
Thanks for your reply... i am thinking in the same way as you, hopefully if they would want to refuse me they would send the rejection mail allready...because ma FI was allso on 26 (prague).
Do you think it is important to have the profile on their carrers web? I don´t have it, because it was an open day in prague...so i didn´t need it....and the recruiter havent said anything about it during the final interview... ? what´s your oppinion? Thank.

Well, the upper age limit is 34. (I think it is 33 on the day of the selection.)

Only 10-15% of the new joiners are 30 or over 30. The ab-initio groups have 0-2 persons who are 30-33.

I'll tell you where you messed it up, no problem.

Just let me know EXACTLY how you looked like, what you appearance was, how you were sitting, what you were doing with your hand, your hair, your nails, what questions you got and tell me word by word what your answers were.

Word by word: I would have kicked you out right away if you had used "cheers", "mate", "buddy" etc. (It's getting on my nerves...) I wouldn't consider anyone with extra weight or messy hair. (I hate bad grooming!) Other people might not think like me: some things depends on your luck as recruiters are different!!! Little experience is not good but too much experience is not good either! (And yet we have cabin crew who worked for another airline for 10 years previously!)

Yes, IQ and EQ tests are important as well (why would we have them then???), your photos, your background etc. They take everything into account.

It's hard to tell why you did not fit the profile.

Vandehuang, you are 22! Don't give it up just yet, try it again in the future!

Hopefulke,

it doesn't matter. (I know that Qatar Airways prefers the short sleeve but EK doesn't care.) The colour of the blouse doesn't matter either.

Look good and feel pretty and confident!!!

I just want to add something to one of the posts before.

I totally agree with all the advice given above to the people attending AD.

However, it's hard to decide when to be "loud" and "taking the lead" or "pulled back". It's hard to find the balance. You really need some luck with your group...

I would like to give you 2 examples to clarify:

1.
I just did SEP. There was a fire fighting procedure. The first person did everything right, really. (She was great!) The 'backup' with the second halon stepped in and tried to continue. Well, tried... But she (a senior!) was not able to remove to bin and actually start fighting the fire. The other person asked 3 times if she found the source. Although, nothing was happening, she did not interfere. Both people failed. There are situations where you need to step up! Obiously, the 'backup' felt initmidated to humiliate one of the seniors.

Solution: she should have said: "Step aside. Now! Give me that halon!". And she should have been fighting the fire. That senior might have given her a hard time in the future but... Honestly, there is a slight chance to fly with the same people again.

2.
My friend attended an open day once. They had a group discussion. There was a girl who argued and argued and did not agree with the group. When the recruiters asked that someone has to present the solution, this girl stood up. (She was NOT selected by the group, she chose to stand up!) The group didn't say anything. She stood up and started: "Actually, we didn't make a decision..." My friend told me that he felt it was over... This girl was very "bossy" and arrogant, presented her own solution. The group let it, nobody had the guts to interfere. The WHOLE group was eliminated!!!

Well, my friend said: "I should have stood up and said something." Yes, that could have been better. (Might have been... Who knows?!) He could have excluded this girl from the final decision and even she was against it, presented something which reflected the opinion of the majority of the group.

What I want to say is: Emirates hires people from all of the world with different personalities!

You can be shy, pretty (most prererably with a 'baby face'), caring, with a big heart. Maybe you will never become a leader but you could be an excellent cabin crew! You could be happy as an FG1 (First Class Steward/ess) for years and win some Nujoum awards! God, I loved First Class!!!

You might have been born as a leader. It's not bad at all! Sometimes you have to step up and fight! Fight for your people! You will love to be an SFS or Purser! You will face some difficulties during 'your journey' but eventually you will reach your goals. (Note: Do not overrule your seniors but help them, assist them. They will appreciate it! If you take control, they will hate you and you get an appraisal with an 'attitue problem'. Respect the hierarhy and wait for Your time.)

Some people on this forum giving the piece of advice to "just be yourself". It's great if you have the ideal personality. (Some people make it to Emirates effortlessly! It's a fact.) If you are not, you know it because you KNOW your weaknesses. I'm - for example - judgemental and impatient. I really needed to pull back during the Open Day, otherwise I would have made comments on others (she's fat, he's not shaved, she talkes too much etc.) and I would have talked too much (I love gossips and chatting!) and I would have commented on some people for not being able to speak English or being stupid. Not acceptable: the recruiters will illuminate thoes people, just wait. I'm sangvinic, so I'm really not able to concentrate for a longer period of time: I had to pretend to listen (nodding, smiling) the whole day but there were minutes that... well, totally fell out...

In some situations you need to be assertive! Do not mix it up with being agressive. (Google the meaning if you are interested, it was hard for me to understand.)

Good luck to all!

And to be frank if they like you(from how present yourself dress blah blah) , if you have a great CV, great photos May be good answers at your FI YOU ARE IN.and certainly your luck. Because your file will be reviewed by other seniors who you never met so you need to impress them with the mentioned above.

vandehuang (http://www.pprune.org/members/333212-vandehuang), I totally understand what you may have felt like; nevertheless, I wish you all the best in the future and I'm sure you'll get what you've always wanted :) I'll wait six months and try again, as I feel more confident than before :) Just so passionate about joining EK. The positive side is, so many people have made it in their second, third, or even fourth try! :)

Mari, thanks as usual for the insights into the age limit. When I recently flew from DXB to SFO, I hung around all the time with the CC and they all informed me that since you are a guy you should not hesitate in applying even if you're 33 -- that kinda raised my hopes up. And then this OD in SFO that I attended, this girl who was 31 was selected (sincerely happy for her:)). That also made me felt like although at 33, I still stand a chance. It's like when you want something so bad, you really don't want to accept the reality of the situation at times. I'm 33 and currently working for the Sheraton Hotel and still want to try... I hope and pray that I become the lucky few who make it in 15% cap. :) Thanks for continuing to relay such insightful and valid information to all of us here :) Good luck to everyone once again and continue sharing your precious experiences!

everyone among the six was good and in my group only 2 got an FI date and the other group only 1 girl got through, meaning on my date only 3 girls got to FI

although the preview day i was told by a friend that 8 girls got FI dates.

The first day attendance was around 70 girls no boys, and second day was also around 75 girls. It was a nice experince

are males invited for the AD in nairobi????

Yes it's different, the 16 PF tests your personality and the IQ, called the Raven's Progressive Metrices is a non-verbal IQ and abstract reasoning test. I had to do the IQ test after my FI. The personality test is on the day of selection, i.e AD, the RO's use your personality test to decide what questions to ask during the interview.

I asked the RO's what the test (IQ) is for and they said the candidates who get selected to do it is randomly chosen. But I have read somewhere that it's for those who gave mixed answers with the personality test. Don't think that's true cause your personality and IQ is not related, or maybe it is?

Hope this helps to provide some clarity.

ps you can google Raven's Progressive to see a example of the IQ test.

Hi everyone ..

I went to the Luxembourg OD, my 4th OD in the last year, and again unfortunately i was rejected.

I am a relatively pretty Indian girl, with a lot of hospitality experience, including care worker and restaurant and call center experience, a Psychology degree, and weight proportionate to height. I don't know where i go wrong because i have an impressive CV and speak 5 languages (European and Indian) fluently. I wear a tailored business dress to the OD/AD with my hair neatly done up and have photos taken recently at a studio, where i look professional.

When it comes to personality, i generally tend to always make friends at the OD as i am quite smiley and interactive, and during group discussion i made sure i contributed but NEVER interrupted anyone else..

Where am i going wrong?! I got the furthest at Luxembourg, getting to the English test phase and i am certain that the test went great .. so i am not sure why i have been rejected?

Any help will be appreciated :)

hope to fly

I've just applied through the web site for every cabin crew posting I was eligible for and was sent the automatic invite to an Open Day but was wondering if I'll still be considered for the Global Assessment Day. My status says Under Review but I think it doesn't mean anything. I wish I could know if someone is actually looking at my info. Does anyone know how long after applying they would take before inviting you to a Global Assesment Day? It's only about a month before they're having one in my area.

Hi TrolleyDolly29j,

I know how it sucks when you are rejected and you know you were perfect. I went to many OD/AD throughout the years (I was in LUX also :-)) and what can I see now is that I am always deselected at the same stage at EK, after group discussion. They are looking for certain pattern no matter how experienced you are, no matter you are the prettiest one, etc. You have to fulfil their criteria (nobody knows what the hell it is :-D) and they must like you.
On the other hand with EY it is a different story (my opinion), they prefer experienced people. 5 years ago (my very first OD) I made it almost to the finals, this year I was rejected from AUH. I can see some progress here. I am going to try again.
2 of my batch mates from my former airline are now working for EK and QR, we all lost our jobs due economic crisis and we are all trying to get somewhere. And what I am trying to say: the 2 are the youngest, before joining it was their first job, their english is not good (mine is neither, but there is big difference, mistakes in every sentence etc.).

One airline loves some people, the another one some other people, some people are able to get through for the first time, some people are able to make it anywhere!!! without problem (but they leave after a year or so because they do not like the job), some people would die for being hired but always fail (they would be perfect at work because they love the job and they would stay forever).

Good luck to everyone and remember KEEP TRYING!!!!!

Hello Everyone just wanted to share with you my Open Day here in Brisbane Australia. 17th July 2010.

So day started around 09:00am at Avaition Australia there was a turn out of about 350 people. All so Glamerous...
We were all taken up stairs and sat down, were had these two beautiful ladies Louise and Allanha, who would be interviewing us.
We were then shown a Viedo on Emirates and the culture.
After this we were asked what we new about Emirates etc... Then we watched another Video and then we had to ask the ladies questions...

After everything the ladies then told us the process and what would be expected over the next few days.. we were also told to removed any un-nessary paper work from our resume's as they had weight restirctions on their luggage when returning and to also attach one photo.

As time went by we were seen one at a time, and we had about 60secs to sell ourselves to the ladies and answer any questions they through at us.. Allanha did one side of the room as Louise did the other..

From this the ladies informed us that if we were successful to the next stage we would recieve a phone call by 05:00pm that day...

By the time i left it was around 01:30pm.. The rest of the day went soooo slow. Around 05:35pm i recieved a call asking for me to please return the following day @ 10:30am. And please wear exactly what i wore that day... being( a light gray suit with dark blue pinstripes, white under business shirt, full face of make-up, hair pulled back, i had it up and in a hair doungh-nutt with hair net, hair sprayed so no wispy bits showed, skin coloured stockings with court shoes+polished, red lip stick.

Arriving the next day i got there early just in case10:00am, once inside i found out that there was in fact three other groups one @ 09:00am mine @ 10:30 and another @ 11:00am... there was about 20 people in each group, so aroung 60 i think made it at this stage.

Once the first group had all the cuts there wasnt many that made it :(.... It was my time to shine :)... So first up we were split up into 2groups, two circles of chairs, in each group we were told to talk amounced each other until they were ready.. we were then told to discuss with each person on our left their most embarrassing moment in life. Then we had to discuss it to the group clockwise.
From this discussion we were given another topic to discuss, we needed to find 5 new destinations for emirates to fly too in which that don't already and why we think they should fly there.
After this we were then called one by one up for a reach test, and asked if we had any tatoos or scars any where and if so where??? we then were told to wait down stairs until called back up..

We waited down stairs for about 6mins, onced called back up we were told to just come in stand around and one at a time we would be called up and given a slip of paper, on this paper it would state if we were successful or non successful... Me being #40, i got called and as i walked out i was terrified to look, but yay i had made it through again i was so happy....

Eventually we were then called back up to the room, being left in our group there was about 7 of us :).. We then had to sit again in a circle and were given a topic to talk about. Our Topic this time was:
We are all a commitee from the IOC. International Olympic Commitee and we had to discuss the next 2 up comming olympics, the london and the Brazil....

From these to games we had to take out 5sports from each, all 10 being different ones, due to the Golbal Financial Crises, we had to discuss which sports and why they were needed to be taken out??? throughout the whole discusions the ladies were watching all of us like hawlks.

After this we then went back down stairs and waited to be called up again... Second time round we were also given a slip of paper like the first and in this slip was the same information.. And once again i had been successful.. i was over the moon and also one of the gals in whom i had made friends with had made it all the way as well.. her being #41 :) :)

So after this we were told to come back @ 01:00pm for another assessment. whislt group3 did there cuts..
A few of us headed out for a coffee and some lunch. when we returned the 3rd group was running way behind.. we ended up going back in around 1:50pm.,,

At this stage there were only 21 of us left out of 350.. WOW...
We were all then asked to come back up stairs and into a different room.. We were all then informed that we had all made it to the final interviews :) yay :)

We were all handed DVD's and alot of paper work, this all needed to be filled in so perfectly it wasn't funny...
We were then all told wat to wear the to the next interview, right down to the point, i'm serious it was full on, the lady used me as a example of what to look like i was like omg so embarrassed. After this we were all given 3 sheets of paper to choose our interview time for the next three days, Monday the 19th, Tuesday the 20th and Wednesday the 21st..
We all came to a decission that people who travelled to Brisbane from other states would go first and ten fill up anything after that,, i was placed on the Tuesday sheet @ 12:15...

After all of this We then had to do a test, it was a personality test and it took about 45mins to do, once finished this we gave it to the ladies and headed home for the day, "4:30pm".

Tuesday the 20th had finally come and i arrived quite early to my interview as thats what the ladies requested we do.
I got there aronf 11.30 and was seen very shortly after :). Once inside we sat at the bigest table i have ever seen in my life, the sat accross from me while Louise asked me question Allanha wrote rappidly my answers, they were very impressed that i had all my documents and photos to profection and that they had all the boxes ticked on my application form. Some of the things i had to bring were one full legnth business attire photo, standing with feet together with left foot slightly back, hair up and very very neat. 2Casual photos smiling in all, as well as 6 pasport photo's so perfect as this would get us a yes or no for the job). ALso copies of every Cert i have ever gotten, Year`12 Cert, Letter of employment, all our application form's and 2 coloured copies of our Passport.

Some of the questions they asked me were to do with my currant job ( Checkin agent for VirginBlue).. from the questions they asked me the give spicific examples and what i said and as to what other said.. Some were

1.Have i ever had a conflict situation with a team member if so what was it?
2. Can you give us an example of when you went up and behond for a guest?
3. Can you give us an example of, have you ever suggested anything to better your team environment if yes what was it and was it implimented?
There was some more but i cannot really remember anymore...
From this the ladies then told me that i were successful and if i could take another test,

They lead me into another room and there Louise sat me down, told me i would be doing a aptitude test, there were about 180 questions i think all in sections, i had 30mins to do it but 45 if i needed it... when 30mins hit i would have to mark where i was up to, and continue... i finished it in 25mins :).. i then went back and said my good buys ... all now i have to do is wait up to 6weeks,,, i hope this helps other.s thanks guys cause i now all your post's helped me :) x

TrolleyDolly29j

So sorry to hear that. I know how you feel like and wish you all the best. You said you attended 4 OD/AD in a year. Isn't there a rule of 6-month gap b/w each? Do you think they may have been the reason for EK rejecting you? All the best and may you make it :)

I'm attending an OD in a couple of weeks. i know appearance is a big deal to them. They say that height should match weight and throughout my research most people say as long as your within your BMI it's fine. But I'm just at the limit for my healthy BMI. Would they think I'm too overweight for the job? Were all the selected people very slim?

Hey guys, I am almost finished with A380 training. Only 4 days left. My special recomendation to all of you is to come prepared.

Bring as much money as you can from home. They will give you money, but you really have to manage yourself carefully, so if you can save anything and bring with you, it will be helpful.

Bring the foods you like, or things that you are not sure to find here. Lots of things are available in Dubai, but when you are new it is hard to be moving around and finding things.

Also for the girls, bring hair pins, nets, and ticktacks. You have no idea how difficult it is to find hair pins in here. At least I haven't found a good source, and most crew buy it outstation, so perhaps it will be easier for you to bring it from home.

To those who already have access to the portal, LEARN YOUR 3 LETTER AIRPORT CODES. We were only informed to learn them all on the last week, plus all the stuff we were learning, too much for the head, so if you can learn it now, it will be beneficial to you. Also learn the PHONETIC ALPHABET from heart. That is NEED to know.

If anyone have any major concerns, just email me. Will be happy to assist.

Good luck to you all

Dany :D

Hi!

I´ve just been notified I´ll be located in Obaidulla Building 6, Al Qusais.

Only good thing is just a couple kilometers away from the airport.
Does anybody has more extended information about this place?

22nd Jul 2010, 10:16
(NOTE: It's not Al Faltat, Mankool area!)

I've been to this building last week visiting a new girl.

It's close to the airport. Going to work will take around 35 minutes, though because the crew bus stops at many other EK buildings. Going home will take 10 minutes only.

The building has 6 floors. It has a brownish/redish colour outside. The building looks nice, it has terracotta style inside. (Many colours - I mean the buildings has many colours -, old fashioned lamps, you will see.) They should have put some flowers and plants inside and around. You will really miss the green: it's in the desert, you will only see sand, cars are parking in the sand. It's not a "posh" area.

However there is a little park and baksetball court just across the street. It's good for running in the winter. There is a Spinney's supermarket 5 minutes from the building. I think the metro station is a bit far to walk in the summer (only in the summer, might take 10 minutes) but you can see the station from the top of the building. There is a Spa downstairs. There are some restaurants and you can order home delivery.

There is a nice pool on the top, although it's not really big. The gym is great, in my opinion.

Apartments are 3-bedrooms. All bedrooms are the same size, normal size (not tiny but not huge) and you will have your own bathroom. Enough wardrobes. (You will find that rooms in some buildings are bigger: Government Building, Garhoud or Manazel Al Barsha has bigger rooms, as well. But Millenium Tower or Manazel Tower on Mankool Road has rooms with the same size.) Bathroom is fine. The living room is big but not huge. Windows are all very dirty everywhere in the flat, it could be annoying. (Well, and not much view...) My friend put up another curtain (you know, what we have in Europe, this see-through curtain) which made the room much friendlier. That flat seemed to be a little dark which is better than having the sunshine: you will need your sleep in a dark and cool room. The curtains are very good - thick and keep the heat out - but not good enough if you have the Eastern room. (You might need to use eyeshade.) You might need to use earplugs, as well, if the flatmates and noise of the street or the airconditioning bothers you.

There is a storage room, quite big. There might be one or two tiny balconies. It's good if you smoke or there is a party in the house.

Thanks for the info, Mari, great as always! Good that the residents have their own bathrooms, Google Map shows a whole empty block next to the building, and you're right, it looks like it's in the desert! But they also had pictures of the park and the pergola thing there, looks lush, but maybe not in summer lol..

I'll pass the info on to my mate, she'll be excited about the description of the interiors.. and from what I have read here and what you have posted, it's good that the rooms are of regular size!

VPN

Being that it is, I believe all internet connections are routed via a server with Etisalat that blocks certain kinds of content. Would it be possible to apply for a Virtual Private Network in Dubai, or is that only possible from overseas? I'd like to consider the option before leaving for the Sandpit.

Any suggestions?

Hello everyone. I Just thought I'd post something that was in the Sydney Morning Herald a week or so ago. I've been meaning to post it for a while now, but just remembered to do it.

Booming Emirates, Etihad to create 60,000 new jobs

July 12, 2010
Emirates and Etihad, the two major carriers of the United Arab Emirates, plan to create almost 60,000 new jobs over the next decade to meet their rapid growth, a newspaper reported on yesterday.

"It took us 25 years to get to 40,000 employees, but in the next 10 years we will double that to 80,000," The National quoted Rick Helliwell, vice president of recruitment at Emirates, as saying.

He said the Dubai-based carrier, the largest in the Middle East, will actually require 60,000 new employees over the decade, after factoring in current staff who retire or move on.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which currently has 8000 employees, will need to increase its workforce to 27,000 staff by 2020 when all its planes on order have been delivered, the paper said.

The Emirates fleet should more than double from its current 149 planes to 300 by 2020, according to the daily, including 32 Airbus A380 superjumbos ordered in June in a contract worth $US11.5 billion ($A13.1 billion).

Dubai International Airport has established itself as the Middle East's busiest airport, handling 42 million passengers in 2009. A second Dubai airport was opened last month, but will be confined to cargo traffic until March.

Etihad, which made its maiden flight in November 2003, now has a fleet of 53 aircraft serving 63 destinations. It has a large list of orders, including 28 to be delivered between 2011 and 2014.

In addition to Emirates and Etihad, the oil-rich Gulf state has flydubai, a sister company of Emirates, and the Sharjah-based Air Arabia. Both are low-cost operators.

The Middle East's travel market has bucked a global downturn trend throughout the global financial crisis, maintaining healthy growth figures.

There has been a lot written on the subject you are asking, especially Mari who has posted very valuable information about Open Days and what to expect, how to dress etc. Other PPRuNers have also contributed a lot. Read back on the posts and you will find invaluable tips. As this is the VIIth thread on the same topic, there has been a lot of attention devoted to the SAME questions you have just asked.

You may glean some tips on how to dress and what to wear, but it is hard, in my opinion, to put on a personality or an attitude. The recruiters have been at it for a long time, during my Open Day I remember the recruiter saying that she has been doing the same job for 7 years out of the 12 that she's been with Emirates, so if you put on a personality or pretend to be someone you're not, they will be able to look through you in a second. Having said that, there are unfortunately many who put on such a flawless performance that they have been able to get through the net, so to speak.

You already have the correct background (if there is such a thing! - who's to say that someone with a background in engineering but has fantastic people skills does not have the 'right' background) so just think ahead and anticipate how you'd like a premium customer to perceive you, and do what you can to project that image. I think one is able to polish up one's presentation, however, your core values must fit with those of Emirates'. As you are already in Dubai, you'd be able to understand what it is that they look for in their staff, for example, respect for our host country's laws and customs, working in a multinational and multicultural environment etc.

It pays to read back what other people have posted, sometimes it stumps me that people just don't seem to want to read back and just expect instant gratification. Is that a generational thing? Oh no.. you and I belong to the same generation! So it must be something else..

I've just been reading through the forums and is it true you have to send them a resignation letter from your current job?? Also by the time the week starts in Dubai it will be a week and a bit since my status changed to 'you will be contacted' im just wondering if other people have had a similar experience? I know they are so busy and definitely don't want to call them...
and is it true they call in order of DOJ??
Thanks for any assistance - this has been such an emotionally draining experience but its worth it :-)

Yes, you will have to submit a resignation letter from your employer to confirm that you have been 'released' from your previous job. I believe this is necessary to secure a UAE employment visa as Emirates will become your 'sponsor' under the "kafala" system. Should you progress to that stage, they will tell you to submit the resignation letter once you have passed all your medicals.

During my time, once my status changed to 'you will be contacted..' I was called within 24 hours, but it seems that people have been given DoJs until the end of September, so they have definitely stepped up recruitment. I agree that it's emotionally draining, however there is really nothing you can do to speed up the process, believe me, I tried! So I can totally empathise with what you're going through. It will come when it comes, you'll be right!

The topic can be anything, my French friend told me that hers was 'What would you change if you were the President/Prime Minister of your country?', and the topic wasn't even the one on the exam sheet, the recruiter just made the topic up! So yea.. it can be anything..

Oh, I really need to complain a bit. I didn't mean to but there are times... It's actually sucks that I cannot talk about my job with my friends and sister at home - they are not interested, they don't understand. And I don't want to complain to my colleagues here. (Anyways, you never really know what goes back to management. Seriously.)

I was gonna ask fingerscrossed about his rosters but I see you are not in Dubai yet, right?

I'm so tired, so exhausted... I had 72 hours in June plus 7 days of ground training. I fly around 116 hours in July and I just had SEP. I fly 115 hours in August. Beside that I need to do lots of paperwork as I'm a senior. Instead of doing my paperwork and other EK related studies, I'm on pprune... I just don't feel the urge to open the Portal and do the appraisals and finish some online courses on my 1 or 2 days off. I should be sleeping but I woke up because I know how much stuff I have to do...

Now, I know that the limit is 900 hours a year. I will have 700 by the end of August. So, I'm wondering how my rosters will look like afterwards. It would be nice to have 6 days off in a row or 3-4 extra days off before my vacation... But no: I'm afraid I will have Jeddahs (or other turnarounds if we start Delhi or Bombai on the A380 - maybe?) following an off, another Jeddah, off, another Jeddah, off... I'm sure Scheduling hates us...

So, back to the topic which might interests you: having a late date of joining might have a good reason. We might be short of trainers for example. I know many of my colleagues who just were selected for Part Time Instructors. They all go under trainig during July and August and start as Instructors later this year. Some of you have seen the vacant positions for Recruiters like 2 months ago. I know from my friends who applied that the selection process finished around 2 weeks ago. The new Recruiters need to be trained as well. Lots of people from the Main Fleet do the conversion courses right now and countinously. The trainings for SFS (onboard leaders) started in June after quite a long time. Both Main Fleet and A380 fleet. The people who moved up from Business or First Class needs to be replaced: there are upgrade courses (Economy crew moves up to Business, Business class crew moves up to First) going on for all grades.

As you can see the college is not only filled up with ab-initio groups but there are current crew getting training for Instructor, doing recurrent SEP training, getting trained for the A380 and crew who get trained in premium cabins or becoming a leader. Obviously we have a limited number of trainers, classrooms and simulators.

All the crew who are in the training college don't fly. They are removed from the roster for 1-2 weeks to get their new qualification. That's the explanation for my flying hours...

Someone before asked if the recruitment goes on like this: I think so. There are many aircrafts on the way and people resign, as well. We receive one A380 each month until December. (As far as I know...) I heard (I haven't seen the Airbus contract, though) that there should be 12 month "pause" after the 15th A380 aircraft. (I also heard that there will be some changes: no idea what.) However, Emirates wants to get the new planes as soon as possible so they will push the production as much as they can.

About the flying hours: G2s (economy crew) have nicer rosters, though. The new ones - A380 - has 75-95 hours usually, I think. You always get 4 days off in a row at least once a month and also 2-3 days off in a row beside that. They should fly instead of me: young, motivated, new so they need money and they are bored on their off days. Right now I just feel old and exhausted and I really don't have time to spend the money. Although, it's not bad: if I don't die and finish July, I can tell that I achieved my record income with 3900 euros including the Meal Allowances given in the hotels. And the exchange rate is not even that great right now: 1 euro is 4,7 dirham.

I know that some of you might be interested. So, my original roster has changed like this:

How does the A380 rosters look like?

July Roster

1-6 SYD-AKL (34 flying hours)
7-8 OFF (2)
9-10 SEP recurrent (7 flying hours paid)
11-13 LHR (14+3 flying hours - technical problem)
14-16 OFF (3)
17-22 SYD-AKL (34 flying hours)
23 off (1)
24-26 CDG (14 flying hours)
27 OFF (1)
28-31 ICN (17 flying hours)

What is a flying hour?
From chock-off until chock-on. You are paid for the actual time when the aircraft is moving.

August roster:
1 Toronto, 2 Londons, 2 Bangkoks, 1 Sydney-Aucland

How long are the layovers?

Layover in Toronto: 54 hours or 76 hours.
Layover in London, Bangkok, Paris: 24 hours.
Layover in Sydney:24, Auckland: 30, Sydney: 24 hours again.
Layover in Soul: 30 hours.

Good luck and happy flying!

To hopefulke:
I had my OD and AD last weekend, and my topic in decussion was,: We are all in a commitee from the IOC. International Olympic Commitee and we had to discuss the next 2 up comming olympics, the london and the Brazil....

From these to games we had to take out 5sports from each, all 10 being different ones, due to the Golbal Financial Crises, we had to discuss which sports and why they were needed to be taken out depending on the countries needs for money??? throughout the whole discusions the ladies were watching all of us like hawlks.
They just mostly watch your body language and your listening skills, just dont ever talk over anyone, and dont be a leader :).. Hope this helps...
