Interesting 're engineering base.

Norwegian do use MAEL at BHX .. but to muddy the water, Boeing are to build a new hangar at Gatwick(pictures show it looking very similar to the BHX hangar) and will also take up to 2 77W types.

Reported to be going to Norwegian under Boeing gold care.

If Norwegian do buy MAEL as well, will they cancel the Gatwick hangar.. (work not started on it yet) or can they find enough work for both ?

I believe the Boeing hangar at LGW is going to involve MAEL as a partner, something i'm led to believe to do with the goldcare deal

Monarch lands easyJet bid for troubled short-haul network

compton3bravo 28th September 2017 07:22

The CMA is the Competition and Markets Authority which would look at the dominance of easyJet slots at Gatwick and Luton if they have an unfair advantage over other operators if they got the slots at both airport's which Monarch have at the moment.

Found this on Twitter

Monarch Airlines are receiving bids for parts/all of the airline from Norwegian, easyJet & Wizz Air. It's ATOL licence expires Saturday.

daz211 28th September 2017 10:11

I was more surprised about how soon the ATOL expires and had not seen any mention of it on here.

Brigantee 28th September 2017 10:21

Maybe that's because the ATOL renewal is not seen as a big deal....Im sure it will happen without any big dramas this year

Skipness One Echo 28th September 2017 10:42

The only airline I can think of who has ever tried to move from an entirely short haul operation directly into an entirely long haul one was Excalibur, who went from a quality and reliable operation flying new A320s into bankruptcy very quickly after the market decided flying old DC10s wasn't a profitable venture.

1994Heavy 28th September 2017 10:57

I think they should keep a proportion of SH and go back to a scheduled charter airline, to get rid of all SH and move to just LH seems an odd plan and one massive risk

LGS6753 28th September 2017 11:44

Pardon my ignorance but who are the CMA?
Competition & Markets Authority (UK)

...easy to find using G00gle

Certain employees have been informed today that flights to New York should be available as early as May 2018 and that a significant press release/announcement will be made tomorrow - 29/09/17.

Snapper5 28th September 2017 12:54

It’s a shame some employees can’t keep their mouth shut , we were told that it was sensitive information and not be released to the public , especially on a forum where spotters and trouble makers are on the loose . But I guess it is only tomorrow (w have known for a few days)
But yes 2 flights a day from BHX-JFK starting next year on the 737 , Boston should be announced soon
Also widebody aircraft & standard bucket and spade routes eg. Florida , LAX , carribean etc.
Supposedly a tie up with NAS but staying Monarch because of the brand .
Monarch will act as a more premium LH , people are still willing to pay a bit extra for a nicer experience etc

nwoody2001 28th September 2017 13:00

Is BHX looking to be the main BASE initially?

CPR 28th September 2017 13:02

Initially then a soak up of the Air Berlin routes. Gonna get busy for those ex 330 boys.

Snapper5 28th September 2017 13:03

Some wiz kid managed to find the BHX-JFK on the crew portal but it was quickly taken down , I assume it would be because of the Primera threat next year .
Personally I think it would be madness if MON didn’t do widebody routes from BHX such a huge catchment area ! Especially with the over capacity at the other airports

EK77WNCL 28th September 2017 13:17

Snapper, twice daily BHX-JFK? Wow!

I wish them the best of luck on this one, but I can't say I have an amazingly good feeling about this. Fingers well and truly crossed for them though

Snapper5 28th September 2017 13:25

Yeah i try and stay upbeat , but i must admit that i am slightly worried about this one .
I am so fed up being run by Greybull though ! its almost like a yearly scare like last year with the very late ATOL renewal horrendous !
all they want is to make money ! they could not give a monkeys about us . I have absolutely no idea how this will pan out for us , i just hope we dont get too shafted , some great guys and girls here it will be a huge shame :uhoh:

The96er 28th September 2017 13:27

That's applicable to every company - particularly in aviation these days.

Snapper5 28th September 2017 13:29

True , but the history of Greybull ...

That's assuming Primera daily, and Monarch adding a daily.

That's the worst possible outcome for BHX, possibly too for the airlines slugging it out in a fares war as a result of which neither will make money, and in all probability both would withdraw.

If I were Monarch I might be thinking of NCL / NYC where (so far) they would have no competition.

nwoody2001 28th September 2017 13:46

I'm pretty sure we all said the same thing when Madrid when from 0x operators to 4x operators, and 3 are still doing well 3 years later!

I think the opposite. AA and UA proved there was a market for this route in 2016 with both flying to NYC. They carried just short of 150,000 pax in a year. Now yes, there will be a proportion of pax transiting through NYC but then these were always higher costing routes, helping to re-enforce a perception of BHX being an expensive airport...

We now have an opportunity to attract a market to BHX in the way that NAX has done at LGW and TCX has done to MAN.
