Think i thought it would be the end of the Monarch, but suggestion here that long haul could still be resurged even if short haul sold off |
I can see the engineering division being flogged off before long
|
I'm going to add my theory:
Norwegian buy into Monarch. Monarch take-over the Norwegian short haul routes but branded as Norwegian i.e. the Monarch AOC remains intact and effectively becomes the Norwegian UK side of the business under the skin. Monarch is the feeder to Norwegian long haul. Norwegian immediately get the 737MAX fleet that Monarch has lined up, they get the crews they need, they get slots as Monarch itself is not sold off but effectively becomes an ACMI operator purely for Norwegian. I'll get my coat.... |
Dc9-32 I think you are very close to the solution, but I would add that Monarch might start their own long haul ,kept as Monarch
|
While that all sounds very logic, my belief is that Norwegian are just after the LGW slots to grow long haul... There not really interested in the SH business.
|
Regarding A330’s, I know there has been chatter about Air Tanker for next summer - but there are going to be quite a few available by the looks of this from Air Berlin, all with decent interiors.... Just as an alternative view..!

Monarch is the feeder to Norwegian long haul .... The benefits of this would be the use of a better known and respected brand for the UK market, instant feeder traffic to the Norwegian network (both long-haul and short-haul) whilst eliminating costs to the likes of rebranding / contract changing / AOC / engineering etc etc. It obviously would give Norwegian the chance to play around with the slots at Gatwick too and make a short-haul / long-haul balance that they feel will best suit them. With many current short-haul Norwegian routes not yet for sale ex-LGW for next summer (after the recent tie-up with easyJet) i can only imagine this is the plan to increase the use of the slots to serve their long-haul operations? |
From most UK airports the outbound shorthaul market is sewn up, and Norwegian don't have a unique product to break into it. The Scandinavian market is different. From EDI they seem to have dropped their summer sun routes for S18, only Barcelona remains. I'm not sure why, therefore, they would want another fleet of 738MAX a/ c.
|
.... presumably they would want them to maintain the non overlapped, reasonably extensive Monarch network, BHX, LBA, MAN are all relatively untapped successful networks for Monarch. Im sure the order via Boeing could ve adjusted accordingly.

Monarch employee told me earlier its official they are going long haul...Interesting times ahead
Money seems to on a tie up with Norwegian who monarch already have links with on the engineering side of things , Might see the big hangar Monarch have here soon full of max's and 787 ,s |
What is Monarch short haul worth? Is this a sale with reasonable value or a nominal sum for it to be taken off Greybull's hands.
Could the sale fund start up of long haul? |
Monarch engineering do most of the world! Including Jet2 Norwegian and emirates! So what's your point????
|
From what I have heard, everything points to Jet2, not Norwegian.
|
Wouldnt be too sure !
|
From where I am sat, everything points towards the gutter, its never our fault, its always something/one else :{
I love working here, but its never good news, in the past 4 years or so, its been the same time and time again |

Titan airways thread mentions they are getting 2 air Berlin (ex LTU) A330's
could this also be a source of L/H metal for MON? |
Only possibly in the short term if at all I would think. Titan probably realise with increasing loco long haul at relatively high levels of utilisation there will be money to be made when the aircraft used go tech, need major overhaul etc. by an ACMI solution
|
indeed titan, privilege style, and euroatlantic all clean up on the increasing ad hoc and sub charter work - both narrow and widebody needs
|
There seem to be two threads emerging, what happens to short haul, and if/when long haul will be launched. Thinking aloud, I'm wondering if Greybull is selling, but current management buys the Monarch branding/facilities etc and relaunches as a long haul airline with widebody aircraft - initially leased from a carrier like Titan.
I'm not convinced that long haul is connected to the MAX order. |
