I think the opposite. AA and UA proved there was a market for this route in 2016 with both flying to NYC. They carried just short of 150,000 pax in a year. Now yes, there will be a proportion of pax transiting through NYC but then these were always higher costing routes, helping to re-enforce a perception of BHX being an expensive airport...

We now have an opportunity to attract a market to BHX in the way that NAX has done at LGW and TCX has done to MAN.

I sincerely hope you are right.

It’s a shame some employees can’t keep their mouth shut , we were told that it was sensitive information and not be released to the public
so why comment then?

BHX-JFK x 2 a day is 2-3 units and about 12 Crews. What about the rest?

good luck...

So where does this leave the shorthaul Side of the business ?

toledoashley 28th September 2017 15:25

I could see Luton - New York work, along with Boston.

rog747 28th September 2017 18:25

re my posting about GIB and MON/OM using 737 800 and MAX into there in the future.

GIB is a high value route and i found it hard to fathom why the choice of MAX

as it stands no one operates the 738 or an A321 into GIB due runway and wx limitations - enter air did take a 737 800 in recently on a one off sports team charter

a pal of mine flies for DY at LGW on both 737NG and MAX types he told me this re GIB operation for the Boeings

''coming back to you on your query roger . GIB is very limiting for both 738 and the 7M8, since the LDA is 1528m. Using Zero wind and a dry runway both aircraft can land with Max Autobrake at 62000kgs.

The NG is a Cat C aircraft for performance whereas the Max is a Cat D.
Would not expect airline operations onto a 1528m landing runway.
the 737-800NG and MAX have much higher APP & threshold speeds than the Classic''

Brigantee 28th September 2017 18:44

As Gib isn't a LH route it won't really matter ..will it?

MKY661 28th September 2017 19:33

But has it been confirmed that they are possibly removing all of their Short Haul routes?

CabinCrewe 28th September 2017 20:09

.... no. Sounds like tomorrow will shed some light. Have a feeling its not a total sell off..

renort 28th September 2017 21:48

Not sure what the obsession is with GIB. That’s one route. EasyJet / BA could pick up the slack in a heartbeat. An airline like MON doesn’t live or die on one route.

Tomorrow will be interesting. Let’s hope this is a robust plan and not some consultants “blue sky” idea dreamt up in a brainstorm because Greybull have got a fleet of expensive aircraft they don’t know what to do with.

The MAX order really has been the catalyst for Monarch’s woes in the last few years. I really wonder if it’s been worth it. Remember the 700 million pension black hole only really came home to roost when it affected their ability to finance the deal someone had previously signed up for.

Quietly getting on with an Airbus fleet and a profitable engineering business and growing their tour operation in the South to Mirror Jet2 in the North would probably have worked.

Instead they committed to one type that doesn’t fit all, that has really opened some gaping holes in the business.

Good luck people.

mudcity 29th September 2017 08:13

Good luck today to all the great people at MON who are faced with yet another 'big'announcement --I fear a lot of good , loyal people will be facing tough times ahead.

Flying Wild 29th September 2017 13:45

So... where's this big announcement then?

toledoashley 29th September 2017 13:52

As I said on the Birmingham thread, Friday is a strange day to make a major announcement. You don't often see it - I think something is more likely early next week.

greatoaks 29th September 2017 15:29

So what will be the position with forward bookings?
If A.N Other Airlines.com buy the short haul business do they take legal responsibility for fulfillment of booked and paid-for flights - if they cant and dont mirror the current schedule are they open to a wave of compo claims ?

I heard it won't be until Tuesday, a worrying weekend for all at MON

Crosswind Limits 29th September 2017 16:22

This may sound strange but I’m not worried - what will be will be! I’m optimistic but whatever transpires, I’m fairly confident crews will still be employed.

pabely 29th September 2017 16:35

Me too, for HO is a different matter when you start to have roll duplication but time will tell.

USER0005 29th September 2017 17:32

Here's a novel idea....

Knock speculation on the head until the announcement is actually made, then comment on facts While a few on this thread probably are up to speed, the majority probably have no idea whatsoever (me included I might add!) and are just idly tossing their own "armchair CEO" ideas into the ring, and likely as not putting the willies up some Monarch employees.

How would they like it if people were speculating about their livelihoods?

bill b 29th September 2017 17:53

Thank you ATNotts well put ...

I don’t know who you are but from this post and others I have seen, I like the cut of your jib! :ok:
