What happens when the last wave start arriving back at base will give us a clue.

So this is it then? This really is the end of Monarch? An airline thats been around for as long as i can remember and whom I've travelled with many times.
IMO the mistake was made when they pulled out of Long Haul and decided to focus on short haul, that decision from a business point was absolutely ridiculous. The market is absolutely saturated and yet they chose to compete with Ryanair/EasyJet/Vueling/Norwegian/Wizz Air/Jet2/ and all the other charter airlines! What they should have done was pulled short haul and beat Norwegian to the punch on the long haul market. I flew to SFB several times over the years and all flights were full and this was NOT in kids holidays! They could have focused on the key destinations popular with Brits such as SFB/CUN/BGI/POP/LRM/MBJ/UVF/ANU/STT/GND/TAB//HOG even SXM and a whole host more! Thats without winter destinations to the east like HKT/MRU/GOI/MBA and others. Nobody has offered any competition to Norwegian and look how they have grown and grown. There's more than enough long haul destinations there to keep them busy 365 days a year. A sad day for aviation all caused by a group of morons in a board room somewhere with no clue on how to run a successful business! |
Only referring to UK airliners & airborne out of the UK,they have also in the olden days been ordered to return to base & turned round after a collapse of the company....
The receivers & administrators always require assets v close to hand... So I would imagine the same would apply to assets scheduled back to the UK. |
The last scheduled departures of the day ex-UK are at 2250 and 2255 to IBZ from LGW and BHX respectively.

I don't disagree with your comments, but there is no getting away from the fact the CAA DID waste £millions of tax payers money this time last year by pre positioning 747's all over Europe! That was the first time that the CAA have ever 'knee jerked' and caused additional instability of a business as well as making the WRONG call and I hope (despite the sheer waste of £'m's) that they again end up with egg on their face. I also hope if it plays out and MON continue to exist that somebody's head rolls at the CAA due to the utter waste of taxpayers money by again flying empty aeroplanes half way round the world for no good reason. |
Thomas Cook calling in extra crews for tomorrow AM. Could be related?
|
Just want to say good luck to everyone at Monarch tonight.
Fingers (and just about everything else) crossed for you. |

The CAA are caught between a rock and a hard place. The criticism for mobilising backup resources will be nothing compared to what would be levelled at them should the business collapse and thousands are stranded in airports around the Med, running out of money and unable to get back home expediently. On balance, I suggest they are doing the right thing if they are making contingency preparations - especially given what has happened previously. |

Well said Jonty.
Best wishes & good luck to all at Monarch. |
From my experience in the bean counting industry, any negative announcement would be made while all the planes were not on foreign soil to avoid foreign airports impounding planes, which would be a pig to deal with even just in translation costs!
I'd just feel really surprised if the airline didn't exist tomorrow though; it seems to me that too many bits of it are worth too much to too many people. |
Just `being` in long haul is not in itself nirvana...
Long Haul Norwegian you highlight could be classed as a "disruptor"... Long haul is rapidly becoming a totally different model being pitched in a totally different way by these new "young thinking" enterprises..(Every dog has his day).. The only way it appears (well the flag carrier anyway) to play catch up is to put yet another seat into the cross section to compete at least on the costings.. |
The money comes from the Air Travel Trust Fund. It currently has a surplus of £145 million.
|
Expect Announcement at 03:00-04:00. All aircraft will be on the ground at UK airports or in the air and check-in will not have yet opened for morning flights.

Not true, there are 2 Night Ibizas which will be downroute around that time. |

The problem is that everyone would expect insolvency to follow, and may start requiring cash for airport fees etc. It seems to me though that this airline has value to other people. Until I see anything suspicious like 8 planes actually taking off from Doha, or the 225Xs to Ibiza being delayed until after 0000 for no obvious reason, or bookings actually stopping, I'll believe that someone will take it over! Both the names mentioned seem like good fits. |
