Yes there is take-off.
Like Blackpool airport have nothing positive to say at the moment. I got this news email from BLK:- Thinking of a wonderful holiday this year? Then look no further than the sunniest match made in heaven: Blackpool International, Majorca and Jet2.com! Jet2.com has great flights to the popular Balearic island – and the best way to ensure easy, hassle-free travelling is via Blackpool International. Kick start the holiday with no traffic jams, a fast track airport experience – and free parking for up to 15 days! Arrive happy and raring to go for Majorca’s wonderful sights, sounds and sunshine. Magaluf and Palma Nova are two of the best known spots to party; Pollensa is great for families and culture, while Palma is a cosmopolitan heartland with beautiful architecture and chic, trendy bars. With regular flights from Blackpool to Palma with Jet2.com from as little £29.99 and free parking, what’s stopping you? |
Jet2 growth at MAN is down to winning trade and IT business...was nothing to do with Ryanair at MAN

Seems there MAY be an Edinburgh link on the horizon, from tonight's Gazette.
They need ANY route going ANYWHERE just to stay afloat....!! :uhoh::uhoh: |
Edinburgh link
More info please:ok:

Edinburgh talks for Blackpool Airport - Lancashire Evening Post
This is from The Lancashire Evening Post - The Gazette carried a similar story. S. |
Well he is certainly an improvement as he is actually talking to his customers through the press.
However, if he can do more than talk then he will be a favourite in my book! London: FlyBE - UK's largest domestic airline without a NW-LON route!:ok: Edinburgh: Loganair (Saying it will attract 16,000 per year, and predicting that would be an 80% LF twice daily on a weekday and daily at the weekend, it would require a 34 seater - commeth the Saab...:ok: Anything before summer 2011? I doubt it... |

Are you trying to say that after LS expanded at MAN, and cut Menorca and Ibiza at BLK, was all coincidence. Somehow I just don't think so..

Advert removed Sangrown - Is this not enough?:- From Blackpool Advert removed EDIT: If BB want to put a LOT more bums on seats - IMO they should do what they do best. The sunshine routes like Girona, even with FR returning. LS could do worse than expand to the ever more popular Turkey, bet that would be a better bet than the tried and failed domestic routes, and East European routes - What the betting that Jersey is pulled from BLK before the end of 2010?. To the sunshine BLK have a future, they are poorly placed as a business base to the South of England IMO - MAN have that stitched up. Not to mention the decent train links. |
I have not been up to date of late - Anyone know about this? |
Thank's: That's not a bad idea for airports like BLK in this depression.
|
Ernest,
I am a bit lost with your logic about LS, IIRC Jet2 had a base at Manchester before Blackpool, had been increasing its presence and route network before it went into Blackpool. I don't believe Manchester's expansion relates at all to Blackpool. Also correct me if I am wrong what Ryanair routes did Jet2 move on to? |
I think what Ernest is quite rightly saying is that the recent expansion of LS at Manchester is directly at the expense of any expansion and probably due to reduction of services at Blackpool.
|
I have to disagree then, and agree with Going Loco, it is down to gaining trade and IT business.
I am sorry it seems a convenient excuse to blame Manchester, which as I pointed out was an exisiting base, which they have continued to expand and apparantly will continue to do so. Using Manchester as an excuse for the lack of expansion in Blackpool is merely that 'an excuse', if the demand was there in the airlines eyes they would have filled it, obviously they don't believe there is. Whether they are right or wrong is a completely different argument. |
Bottom line is, of course, that there is very little chance of BLK ever "expanding". Like a spring, it's already stretched to its' limit and is most likely to recoil & snap in the near future!

If that is your opinion then fair enough. But TRS2 summed up what I meant to say accurately. Seems a coincidence that all the talk of expansion with routes to the Eastern Med, and the talk at that time was whether the third a/c to be based at BLK would be a 737 or a 757. Of course Even you can I doubt deny that since FR threw their toys out of their pram at MAN - LS were more than eager to expand at MAM, it seems at the expense of expansion at BLK - In fact Jet2 activity since then has shrank at BLK. This of course was always the danger with BLK having all their eggs in the JET2 basket once Monarch and Ryanair had left BLK. |
My comment about the trade and package holiday tie ups is not a hypothesis or an opinion. It is fact - commonly understood in Jet2 and the industry. With the exception of MAN-PRG, everything new for summer 10 is being done in collaboration with tour operators. They take some seats, Jet2 take the others. No one makes quite as much money as they would going it alone, but it dilutes the risk of it going t**s up and that suits PM just fine. It means he puts his aircraft where the trade wants to sell package holidays though. This has nothing to do with Ryanair at MAN or some love affair for MAN from within Jet2. The package hol operators are archaic and only familiar with MAN, EMA and NCL as northern departure points, so that's where PM has put his machines. That's why we see Jet2 opening a brand new base in EMA (a huge Ryanair base by the way Ernest) and cutting back at BLK. The amount of risk being borne by the trade in EMA means that for Jet2, the new base is actually less risky than going it alone at an established base like BLK Harsh but true.

Using Manchester as an excuse for the lack of expansion in Blackpool is merely that 'an excuse' Could it be that the expansion at Manchester in particular is to establish a very strong base large enough to become the new headquarters of LS should FR wipe the floor with them at Leeds. Just a thought. |
Last summer of Jet2 at BLK?
Rumours abound that the end may be nigh - have heard
Balfour's might prefer a non-jet future for their airport. Thoughts anyone? |
Rumours abound that the end may be nigh - have heard Balfour's might prefer a non-jet future for their airport. Thoughts anyone? I don't think Balfour are really in a position to choose, do you? 749957, instead of spouting !!!!!, please, please, please, try and add something of substance to the thread. Much appreciated!:ok: |
Seal that spout
Hear hear! Who ever heard of an airport operator saying such things! The right turboprop has always been the sensible choice on thinner routes so I expect that is the sentiment behind BLK's plans. If a runway is capable of taking jets you never turn them away.
I think, in a more competitive market, the reverse can be true though. If you had the choice of flying from Manchester to, say, Düsseldorf, in a jet or a turbo you'd probably choose the jet. I won't bore you with the stats about airline performance at the moment - suffice it to say that vanity route launches and spoiling tactics were the first thing to get axed when the crunch came so we're experiencing familiar contraction at the moment and that can easily be reversed when times are better. Prudence in this marketplace is the difference between being a Jet2 or being a Globespan/Excel/Zoom/Silverjet etc etc etc. The basket at BLK may be dominated by red and grey planes at the moment but it is far from full. Met the new boss - a refreshing blend of style AND substance! |
