Has there been any hints at a third daily flight to glasgow?
|
With growth rates tailing off, current empty seats and the other two carriers with over capacity by >20 % at EDI, I cant see that happening any time soon, unless it was purely for cargo.
|
I could see it happening by next summer. Business class is full the majority of the time and lots of cargo still in the belly. If an A380 was to come instead of a third daily then that would attract potential EDI customers for Etihad and Qatar if the price was right because people wouldn't mind paying another £20 to go on the A380 apposed to a A330.
A factor for those choosing EDI at the moment could be that those are both morning flight to so people might want to leave earlier and arrive at the destination a bit earlier. |
The January passenger numbers article for Glasgow did say that there had been an increase in demand for the Dubai route so if it is large enough then they may look to increase.
After all Birmingham got a third daily flight when it's Dubai numbers were around 41000 pax per month and Glasgow is around 38000 pax at the moment so hopefully a third flight may be introduced soon |
You also have to remember that Birmigham had more seats to sell than Glasgow. They had a two class cabin with 427 seats and Glasgow had a three class with 360 seats.

BHX-GLA
Firstaid
The third BHX-DXB was announced on 22 December 2014 and at the time the latest full month figure was November 2014 which was 45891 an average of 382 passengers per flight or 89% load factor (2 class are now 42/386). Glasgow hasn't even reached 40000 but I suppose that is a bit unfair as it mostly 3 class aircraft and the maximum number of seats is around 44640 using 360 seats (there are/were a few 364 seat aircraft in the fleet as well as several 354's). The BHX third service has been a slow burner other than school holiday periods when they could fill 3 x 380's but it will be interesting to see if they go for the 380 first at Glasgow on the lunchtime but it can come at a cost - BHX is rebuilding its double airbridge to make it a double decker triple airbridge £££. agreed, nothing to see here, and not for a few years from reasons mentioned above.
|
Fair enough I got my figures wrong but we can always hope that things pick up as a third daily flight would certainly help Glasgow close the lead that Edinburgh has gained these last few years.
|
Manchester is now doing 80,000 with 1 3 class B777 a 3 class seat A380
and a seat 2 class A380 and they are still looking as an extra flight will be required in short time Ian |

Emirates will not launch the world longest route to Panama-City. New daily flights to Yangon-Hanoi will be launched in August and VIE will see the A380 from July.

I think that it's good that they didn't go ahead with Panama City as I think this was quite a pointless ultra long haul flight. I think Auckland definately made more sense. I think that Emirates should concentrate on increase frequency on existing routes and also be adding more routes to Europe & Asia.
Are there any routes that Emirates should really be operating that would be successful and realistic? |
I would say Kathmandu, Detroit, Mexico City and maybe Helsinki are all destinations that would serve Emirates well and seem strange that they don't fly there yet
|
Right now EK has a lot of work to with the retirement of A332, A343, A345 and B772. A lot of changes but not so much new / additional routes.
HEL should be one of their next destinations in Europe. In the US there might be better options than DTW like PHL, MIA, DEN. Kathmandu was served in the past, flydubai flies there from DXB. Mexico-City flights right now are not possible nonstop. Due to altitude and runway length MEX-DXB need to stop somewhere which is time consuming and costs some money. B77X should do it nonstop once EK receives this aircraft from 2020 onwards. Also interesting to see how EK will launch new routes in the future as the B77L (266 seats) will be their "smallest" aircraft in a few years. They just have 10 of them which are used for their long-haul flights. |
Emirates is currently lobbying the Swiss Government for 5th freedom rights between ZRH and MEX, so they can launch a DXB-ZRH-MEX service. Whether or not they are successful in their request remains to be seen...
|
Could anyone provide a full list of EK's current A340 300 and 777 300 routes (and possibly the end date if applicable, i.e the A343 to KBL ends 01/12/2016)? I'm aiming to get on them this year before they're retired
Thank you very much! |
I thought Panama was canned because they had the plumbing for the extra fuel tanks on the B77Ls removed and they didn't realise you can't reactivate the tanks after this? And that Auckland is in doubt for the same reason?
|
AKL is already operational.
